One I’m surprised to not see yet is Henderson’s 90th minute winner at Cheltenham. A sublime chip to send us top of the league (I think!). So many of my favourite goals have been late winners. A peculiar one that stands out to me is Calvin Andrew’s 95th-minute header against Port Vale. It was late in the season so didn’t mean much, but Port Vale were a bloody horrible, anti-football, ‘team full of w@nkers’ type team, and it felt damn good to put one over on them. |

You missed a good one! A genuinely outstanding performance with complete control from start to finish. I’m not exaggerating when I say it could’ve been double figures if not for some outstanding saves from Shelvey. I couldn’t choose a MOM if I tried as everyone was excellent. One thing that stands out to me as a big difference between this season and last is the substitutes. Last season there was a very real feeling that our substitutes made us worse, epitomised in that Southend capitulation where every sub was terrible. This season, so far, every substitute appearance we’ve seen has been fantastic and only added to our performance. |

It depends what you really classify as a midfielder. McBride and Barlow are technically midfielders even though they play in the attacking-midfield/10 position. Out of everyone we’ve signed this summer, arguably only Petit will be challenging East and Gilmour for those two central midfield roles, and he’s a defensive-midfielder, something we’ve been lacking for years. Mancini will be competing with Barlow in the AM role. Pritchard by all accounts played at RWB for Oldham and can also play as RW. Humbles can potentially play CM but will likely be competing for the AM spot too. So if we’re being picky that only leaves Gilmour, East, Petit and Edwards for those two central midfield positions. And Burger, though going off Jim’s comments I can see him being loaned out. |

Ok. Quite smart but a bit boring. Blue shorts would be a mistake. There isn’t enough black as it is. |

Good signing by all accounts, and certainly adds more depth which let us down a lot last season. It is, however, a sad indictment of where Morecambe are at present. A senior player, with a confirmed contract extension for a year, being allowed to leave. Hopefully their situation is resolved soon. |

Absolutely not Gary Jones, unless I’ve missed him managing somewhere. Of the last 7 managers, the majority have been rookies with no experience and only Hill of those exceeded beyond expectations. There are plenty of managers around who’ve achieved promotion from this division, and as much as we like to play ourselves down in this town, we’re a very attractive proposition. |

Barlow signing a new contract? |

Agreed. As much as I like East, we’re a better side without him. East and Gilmour together negates a lot of the good qualities of both. It’s no coincidence Gilmour’s been excellent since East got injured and our form has really picked up too. Gilmour Barlow Ayinde Bird Rodney |

They haven’t, James. It’s bizarre that anyone’s come to that conclusion. |

That last paragraph is quite a stretch, even for you. You must be very limber! The Ogdens are seasoned businessmen, they know how adored and respected they are among the fanbase, they don’t need fantasists on a message board to defend them. Rather than condescending potential fans, why not try and understand them? I’ve told you I speak to countless people around Rochdale every day, and I’ve told you they aren’t aware of this game. Trust you to find some rhetoric where that’s their fault. You say you’ve put forward the reasons why marketing hasn’t been neglected. In fact, all you’ve put forward are suggestions why marketing has indeed been neglected. And, as I said, they’re poor, lazy excuses. If you feel it hasn’t been neglected, tell me how. |

‘Suggesting has been neglected’? There’s no suggestion, anyone who lives in the town can see it plainly has been neglected. A scroll through Twitter will show you the same reflection. I work with people across the town and I’m not exaggerating when I say I haven’t spoken to a single person who’s aware of this game. These are football fans. Ones that aren’t necessarily Dale fans but would, by their own admission, be enticed if a bit of effort was put in. You said in an earlier post that only positive performances in key fixtures will improve attendance. This is a key fixture, but if there’s nobody there to witness this hopefully positive performance then how can that improve attendance? Word of mouth can only go so far. ‘Last time we had a big crowd we played poorly and the crowd dipped for the next match’ is such a poor, lazy excuse. |

Or perhaps because the marketing for this match is non-existent. |

Has anybody seen this match advertised on any billboard or bus stop around town? I only ask as I travel around the whole of Rochdale regularly and I haven’t. I posted similar on Twitter, but why is this game not plastered every-bloody-where? Thousands of people drive past those animated billboards at St.Mary’s Gate every day (usually sat next to them in traffic). That’s just one of dozens of locations that get thousands of Rochdalian eyes on them daily. Why haven’t we got any advertisement up? It’s no use advertising on the official website or emailing season-ticket holders, we already know about it. Billboards, bus stops, even a great big banner on Sandy Lane right outside the ground. This is our biggest game in years yet the average Rochdalian has no idea about it. Edit: I in no way meant to detract from the positivity of the other thread or that wonderful video, but I do think this conversation needs to be had. [Post edited 7 May 23:17]

I’m glad I’m not the only perplexed by that! Gordon and Beckwith are easily FL level. They’d both excel at League Two if not higher. Gilmour could definitely do well in the league above too (although, as I said yesterday, I think he’s better when not partnered with East). I think TAR could do well also, but I agree that I wouldn’t be offering Allarakhia a contract should we go up. As for the loanees, Bird and Kingdon are the obvious standouts that we’d love to keep but will probably be unattainable. I’d like to see Ayinde again - he’s very inconsistent but he does have a real spark to him. As for the keepers, I’d be happy with Waller or Barrett. The rest can be returned. As for those still under contract, I can’t fathom why Armstrong was ever given a 2-year contract. One of our strangest signings in recent years. |
