We're not playing Brentford next week. Of course, a striker on the pitch would help but we'll get on the ball more and create far more chances against Preston. I see signs that the players are being asked to take more risks than maybe they did under Marti. There were a few little passages today where we popped it around quite nicely and played riskier forward passes when we could have just gone back. It wasn't quite good enough against Brentford but I can see it working against lesser opposition and leading to some good chances. Let's see what happens next week. |

I think that's a bit pessimistic. Realistically we're two or three signings away from being competitive. A left back, a hard man in centre mid and a striker. We've got two decent keepers, one of the best right backs in the league, at least one quality CB in Morrison with others with decent potential, two very good CMs in Field and Varane (one more needed although Vale looks like he might have something about him and I've not totally given up on Madsen yet) and a good bunch of skillful forward players (Chair, Poku, Dembele, Kolli). For the first time in a long while we have some half decent young players who, if handled correctly could go on to play in the first team. We haven't seen our new striker yet (bit odd he didn't get ten minutes today to show us what we might be able to expect) and reports suggest we have another one incoming. Frey's fitness is a concern but he should still be good for 15-20 games. Maybe a case of horses for courses and careful rotation of strikers. I certainly don't think we're going to be troubling the top six but I'm also not going to sh#t the bed before we've even played one league match. The drawn out Eze transfer saga isn't helping as we can't be sure whether we've got nothing to spend or a decent amount. It's only the Championship, not the champions League and I bet half the teams in the division are saying their preseason has been poor and they look like relegation candidates. Only three can go down and surely Wednesday take one of those spots. I think we'll be okay. [Post edited 2 Aug 22:28]

Varane in the promotional photo too. Hopefully that means he's sticking around. |

I told you you were a lucky charm. What a day you must have had! I watched it at home with the kids. My daughter who you kindly sorted out with a ticket for the last Euros final is mad about football and dreaming of one day being the next QPR fan to score in a major final. This team is special. An inspiration for so many young footballers. Happy days! |

We all know the reality of our financial situation. We keep him, he scores ten goals and doesn't sign a new contract and then walks away for nothing next summer. I don't see how that makes more sense than turning a very good profit on him and reinvesting in a couple of new players on longer contracts. If he scores 20 goals and Charlton make the play offs then the club look a bit stupid but I'm happy with the risk involved. Others aren't which is part of what keeps us coming back to this message board every day. |

And if he'd stayed and scored 10 goals then I don't think that would have been the difference between promotion and relegation. He would not have signed a new contract and we'd have lost him for nothing next summer. Instead we have the money to bring in a couple of new signings. Of course they're a bit of a punt too but they'll be on longer contracts and less money than we'd have had to pay Kelman to persuade him to stay. Personally, I'm not too bothered by this one. Club doing the right thing. |

It's obvious he was never signing a new contract. £3.5million gives us money to buy two new forwards and probably pay their wages for the next year or two. I doubt selling Kelman is the difference between a promotion push and a relegation battle. Likelihood is we're lower mid table side with or without him. We simply have to take the money and reinvest rather than risk getting nothing for him in a years time. One (or both!) of the two strikers we're reportedly bringing in could be a success. That'll be amazing. Back to back Euro's finals. Hopefully you're a lucky charm. Have a great time. |

The kid out there today looks a good way short of being up to it so I guess it might have to be. |

This RB looks pretty poor. Mbemgue can cover there too I think |

At least Vale looks good but we're still not very good at playing it out from the back. |

Definitely targeting right back which won't be such a problem once Jimmy's back in. |

I think the physical advantage probably kicks in around 13/14. At 10/11 the girls are often bigger than the boys. When my son's team (admittedly not JPL standard) played Charlton under 12s, the girls were easily a physical match for them. With regards to the number of coaches etc I guess Arsenal see value in investing in the women's game. All the women's games are at the Emirates this season and they tend to get 30,000+ in attendance so I'd imagine they do alright off the gate receipts and sponsorship deals. |

My daughter plays girls football at under 11s. She plays for a club with a really good set up. There's a head of girls football who oversees all the girls teams up until they reach the women's team. The standard is decent considering a lot of the girls have only been playing a year or two. We went to a tournament recently and the best teams there would have beaten a lot of boys teams of the same age. They were really good. A couple of years ago when my son was under 11s, the Charlton under 12 girls played in his league. They were excellent. Played really good football and beat my son's team three times that year. First game the boys didn't really know what to do and thought it would be easy playing against the girls. Even the goalkeeper in the Charlton team was one of the best in their league. From what I've seen the girls and women's game is improving at a very fast rate. Considering it was more or less totally amateur and with little to no audience 10 to 15 years ago, it has come a long way very quickly and will only keep on getting better. |

I don't think this is a real account. Not enough followers to be genuine. |

A week in Suffolk at the end of July then two weeks in Dordogne towards the end of August. Can't wait. |
