Most of us only really have a basic understanding of the financing of a football club but within that my understanding is that the hardest part of the game is putting the ball in the back of the net, which generally mean to me it would be the most expensive purchase. Cook and JCS are probably well paid as has been written but most of our signings at the back have been free or at least low transfer fees. I would love to have prime R9 at the club as that is who springs to mind from your description of a proper CF but i think that type of player is few and far between as the top scorer graph shows even in the Championship that is becoming a rarity and even looking at the top leagues in and around Europe that is what people are searching for. My concern at times isn't the player playing in that CF role its our supply into that position, creating those clear cut opportunities for a player not necessarily the CF but runners to thrive and score goals, for example Madsens timely late arrival for a first time cross and goal at Sunderland. When it works it works well but I don't think we create that opportunity often enough. |

Who are these costly CB's and DM's that you refer to? Also, what is your definition of a proper CF? Fitness being a massive issue but putting that aside if Frey had been fit for the entire season he would have been well into double figures, Celar looked to be showing why we had signed him and kolli has chipped in with vital goals. The problem as always is budget, CF's cost more money because of the importance they play in the system. We have admittedly been poor in our recruitment of strikers but money has unsuccessfully been spent on Dykes, Washington, Bonne, Sylla and many others. |

Hey mate, From what i read(not ITK) Calm did most of the defensive shaping and Cif was more on the attack side. Sorry if that sounds pedantic! I agree with everything else though and very much hate the lets endlessly pass it around at the back. |

Maddening! Without going back down all the well observed comments from when he first rocked up here; mental issues etc. I just find it absolutely frustrating and many other adjectives, this guy even going off Youtube videos has made it to the ranks as a professional sportsman yet is treating it with such disdain. His appearance record for a now relegated Cambridge are embarrassing. Like others mentioned such as JET, Ravel, Jeanne and many more he might end up regretting his life choices. To get to this level of elite sports and get past all the relative age groups is some bonkers stat like 0.05% and then p$$s it all away. As a limited player myself I would have loved for half the opportunities that he's had as would those in our youth teams about to be released as not good enough! It makes me glad in certain respects that we have Madsen(i know he has another thread) and others who have had a rough start to their careers in the EFL and who are taking on board the advice and training and trying to make a fight of it. Whatever the conclusion this young man will have a lot of regrets i think/hope. |

I like him as well, occupies CB's and puts in a shift. Shame we won't know if he's staying for a while; same with many of them! Kelman doing well again for LO. Now the dust has settled its going to be a waiting game to find out all the ins and outs - big summer me thinks! |

Great result and a brave performance with lots of players putting themselves about and showing effort and desire. Walsh looked a little shaky for me, some good saves later in the game and as people have noted a good kick on him. As someone mentioned, Frey played the whole match which he wasn't previously doing - is that because of a training thing or something else? I know its the last game of the season and as fans we can read things into certain situations but do you think maybe things had got stale with Marti and players weren't necessarily buying into training anymore and or his setup? Was he being too stubborn and trying to prove a point to CN by not playing a CF at times and other line-up abnormalities? Just intrigued |

Without hijacking this thread and making it about Welsh players ;) I think we have two at different stages of their journey within the R's set up and plenty more doing incredibly well within other youth setups! I can only imagine with a username like that that you are another Welsh R! |

Nick, can't disagree with a thing that you've written. We can only live in hope that the new structures, the pathway and the training ground hold some weight. It's disappointing the potential talent that we have lost along the way. In most circumstances parents will look out for the best interests of their children, not always I understand but I suppose naively this is the battleground we are in. We have to hope that for every Harvey Elliot we loose that their is an Emerson Sutton etc to fill the void. I'm intrigued by the youth set up and the work thats gone into it could play a major part in our future but its a lottery at that age, for every Elliot their is a Balanta and a Richards. I think to quote an American football article only 0.1% of college players make the big time and i think its the same in our youth set ups. Sorry, i think ive waffled and gone off tangent a few times but I'm sure you understand. |

Some part of me wants the club to be keeping these players away from the spotlight and in this age of social media thats impressive! But their is nothing on our squad list that even mentions this kid, no profile or anything. The other part of me would love to know about our success stories and without hyping young players up too much to know whats coming through the ranks - share the good news just like with the development squad. I'm not naive enough to think everyone's going to make it or in our case not be poached by a bigger fish especially as people within the football world seem to know about this kid already. On a side note I hope he looks at the examples before him, Sutton recently as we all know signed his first contract with us after speculation linking him with Spuds and someone else - wishful thinking. |

Thanks Aston, sounds like a positive step - do you know if we are still signing the kid from Aberdeen/Scotland(CB)? As many have said with the signings of the likes of Dillon and others for the Development teams its boding well, if we can get them on decent loans and progress them through to the first team squad, also makes that side very competitive with hopefully people pushing for first team both from the younger categories and from within the development side. |

So, for me its on a level with L2/conference its maybe on a par with the league of Ireland but I've never watched that particular league. The strides that the FAW will have to go to to make it a respected league will take decades, in my opinion. I personally, think their are plenty of examples of ways to grow it commercially and from a spectacle to hopefully make it a viable league. Maybe looking at leagues like the MLS for inspiration. We are a small nation but that shouldn't stop us being competitive. |

Hey Mate, So baby steps, I think the first is the league Cup, then the expansion to 16 teams for the JD Premier. I think it might happen in my lifetime but as i've said previously the 4 teams have played in the EFL for decades and cynically its going to be about revenues and finances for it to be attractive enough to join full time. |
 | Forum Reply | Welsh clubs having their cake and eating it at 16:00 14 Jan 2025
So from what I understand, the FAW has conducted a review of the Cymru league, its expanding the format to 16 teams and part of that restructure has been to look at ways of making the league more attractive and increase revenue blah blah blah. They have been consulting with the four to see if they would be in favour for a while now and trying to work through the varying complications and making sure it is viable with the FA UEFA so as to not have a detrimental effect on the four. The FAW are already pumping millions back into the Welsh game courtesy of our relative success over the last decade that has increased its popularity as a sport and the revenue from qualifications to major tournaments. Naturally the next step is to make the league a more attractive proposition, increase footfall and grow the domestic game. I don't personally know if Disney have an angle but trust that the FAW are looking at the best interests of the game in Wales |

AHH Terry, Different eras, i think i might be a little younger! I just remember in the 90's CCFC etc not really caring! As much as i'm very much a QPR fan i'm also very invested in the development of football in Wales and hoping to see us thrive as a football nation. Thank you for the debate so far! |

The Welsh clubs by and large are supporting this decision, it would bring increased interest, gate receipts and challenges to the existing clubs. The agreement with the 4 is that the monies won't go to them but to be distributed among the league clubs. I didn't know about the situation with the play off final and if that is the case i don't support that decision. The four, are forgoing qualification in the league cup and FA Cup so if they were to win they wouldn't qualify. Finally, without repeating the same stuff those four clubs have been in the EFL for longer than i have been alive as the Welsh league never really existed - similar happened with the MLS and Canadian clubs. Plenty of examples around Europe of teams playing in different leagues to the country they are from. |
