 | News Comment | Saints Award Jack Stephens A 3 Year Contract. at 21:48:46
Unless Jack is being retained for his loyalty and leadership off the pitch I cannot believe he has been given any contract extension. Am I alone in thinking his season was often marked by schoolboy horizontal passes across our penalty area, bringing threats on our goal and confusion amongst his fellow defenders. In my opinion he has never been better than a fill-in player of decent League 1 standard and if he is now expected to lead us through the upcoming season I don't see promotion beckoning. Obviously, others will disagree but, I think this news is nothing short of negative. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict at 17:26:23
I think yesterday saw some distinct promise with the prospective pairing of Stewart and Robinson. In the Championship they could score goals but, only if we create chances for them. How many times did Sulemana snatch the ball off Arsenal, pelt down to the edge of their penalty area and then seemingly become confused as to what happens next but, at least he tried to put himself in the shop window for a stint in a less competitive European league. Our passing, in general this season, has been inaccurate and abysmal when attacking, and that's not just down to Kamaldeen. We need a midfield general and the need to iron out defensive errors. The prospect of Wood and Wellington progressing, more of Sanda and Edwards, and the resurrection of Charlie Taylor spells hope, especially if Harwood-Belliss improves and we add a decent goalkeeper, assuming Ramsdale is gone, gives me hope. After all, how many teams in the Championship should we really fear? Ipswich, Leicester, Sheff Utd and money-laden Birmingham but, that's about it. I look forward to the challenge under a bright new manager. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Everton The Verdict at 20:22:32
Goodison Park deserved more worthy opponents than Saints for its final EPL match. In view of the fact that our team as expected didn't turn up, it would have been a not unreasonable gesture if Saints had returned their ticket allocation and allowed those home fans gathered outside the stadium to say their farewells inside to the old ground. We provided nothing other than our usual diehard fans. We'll need them next season more than most of the players. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The Verdict at 18:26:56
All those on the pitch did their bit yesterday and well done to them but, only one outfield player stood out as being capable of matching City's standards and that was Fernandes. Keep him and make him captain. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Crystal Palace The Verdict at 16:06:23
I venture to suggest that some of those empty seats were due to supporters being delayed in traffic following the accident that caused tailbacks for hours on the M27 and all other route approaching the city from the east. I didn't arrive until 8pm having taken two and a half hours from Lock's Heath. As for perfomances, I thought KWP showed how much we will miss him (should he go) with his wonderful display which put others to shame. Why, oh, why was there never anyone up with him on his mazey runs, or to support Tall Paul for that matter. Flynn Downes was rightly booked after several borderline tackles/fouls which he'd got away with in the preceding fifteen minute. If he'd have stayed on he probably would have been sent off before the eventual end. The biggest disappointment for me (yet again) was Tyler Dibling. He contributed nothing. Overall, a fighting performance signalling a possibility that we might get another two points. |
 | News Comment | Southampton To Play £100 Million Hardball With Manchester City & Spurs at 11:38:26
I think it will be hard for Tyler to shine in the crunching tackle regime that is often the Championship and his advisers could be right in thinking the EPL is the place for their boy because there he's less likely to have his glossy skills kicked out of him, especially in a better team than he's playing now. Agreed only one TD in a generation is unearthed at Saints and I believe the club should cash in for as much as they can get and reinvest the lot to get us back up. |
 | News Comment | The Time For Managerial Change At Southampton Is Now at 14:49:42
I posted a couple of weeks back "Are Sports Republic really bothered?" If they are then why haven't they said somewhat more than Spors somewhat recent ambiguous statement, like "Saints supporters can rest assured that the board will invest robustly in players, staff and structure to endeavour to secure promotion back to the EPL where this club truly belongs" and then take some immediate action (such as Juric out) to show that they do mean business. At least that would awaken hope in the fanbase because travelling to St Marys at this time is akin to being sent repeatedly to prison for punishment for crimes we haven't committed but, are innocent onlookers of. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Brighton The Verdict at 11:44:25
I stayed until the final whistle, how the score wasn't much higher can only be put down to Ramsdale and his pre-match prayers. The telling thing for me was Juric's Radio Solent post-match interview when he more or less admitted he hadn't got a solution. I don't think he's up for the job. The Rusk/Lallana suggestion seems sensible for the rest of the season. It's not just that our players aren't good enough, they are also too slow, brushed off the ball easily, can't pass or cross accurately and are devoid of confidence. This goes back to the start of this season and RM's management and training. That wasn't working and under Juric things are even worse. If Spors or Solak don't grasp the nettle now and show some foresight as to what the club's aspirations are for next season then there will be many empty seats at St Marys for them to ponder. This is unbelievable. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Bournemouth The Verdict at 11:19:15
How can it be that we fans are questioning the obvious - Wellington taken off at halftime when Bournemouth were making little progress against him, Ugochukwu not starting, Bree played as a centre back (a feat he did not accomplish), no sign of Gronbaek, Smallbone left on when he was patently out of his depth, Bednarek needing stronger support whilst displaying his usual strengths and weaknesses....anyway the list of team selection and tactical errors goes on and on and Juric (and, apparently, those above him seem oblivious? Is Southampton no longer the prospective jewel in the Sports Republic crown? Göztepe are doing well in their league and their management structure looks settled. Are they now the favoured possession? I ask only because nobody at SR seems remotely interested in what is happening to us and in Juric we have a front man who is not delivering any shred of hope thus far and is already out of touch with the fanbase. It is just sad. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Manchester United The Preview at 16:11:20
It would help if Juric could improve Saints passing which is woeful. Out of boredom I watched Millwall play the other week. They are a mid-table Championship side but, they, too, have a new manager and they looked really slick and accurate. We have often been the architect's of our own downfall and, until we stop giving the ball away, our fortune will not take an upturn. We might also show a bit more bottle in the tackle. I noted that Smallbone dodged a couple of Swansea hard men on Sunday. You can't do that and hope to get away with it. |
 | News Comment | Saints Get Pricing Badly Wrong As Set For Lowest FA Cup Attendance in 15 Years at 16:27:51
I'm not going. Neither are all the regulars around me in the Kingsland. The closure of my stand plus the implied threat that I would pay more if I left the decision as to where to sit till later on made up my mind. The nil price concessions policy in the cup is simply a prelude to the nil concessions on 2025/26 season tickets. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Brentford The Verdict at 19:09:20
If I was a player I wouldn't want to be out on the St Marys' pitch right now, would any of you? The majority of Saturday's featured individuals looked just like that - individuals - with no knowledge as to what the system now is and it was brought home to them emphatically that they will be overrun, outplayed, outthought and humiliated over and again for the rest of this season. Any of them with ambition will be praying that the transfer window gods will pluck them to safety or else total nervous breakdowns threaten aplenty. No footballer wants to see their supporters turn their backs on them and depart in disgust. The money they're paid doesn't count in these circumstances for most of them. We, like them, can only hope that personal pride will come into play but, after Saturday's abject display, that hope might be a forlorn one. i don't see the Saints marching into anywhere any time soon. |
 | News Comment | Shea Charles On The Radar Of 3 Top Flight Clubs at 17:55:55
I thought at the time that shipping Charles out for experience was somewhat hasty but, in fairness to whoever made that decision, our squad was and is top heavy, and it is sometimes difficult to judge how quickly a player is going to develop. Charles was in and around the first team last season and was improving but, who saw Dibling's rise to the top. I thought that Sam Amo-Ayew would have broken through first. Although I found RM's tactics not to my liking, I doubt the number of men competing for places helped him. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Fulham The Verdict at 18:09:42
I thought this was a far more spirited performance than of late and Wood showed real grit and probably warranted being in the team much earlier this season. Hopefully it won't take our new boss too long to sort out the defensive mess left by RM but, he needs to spend more time on midfield and attack. We don't create many chances these days and when we do there is not the personnel up front to regularly stick them away. Adam Armstrong is patently struggling at this level, Tyler Dibling looked fatigued against Fulham and Tall Paul, Cameron Archer and Sulemana were hardly tried in tandem by the previous regime so we don't know what they might achieve. More interesting times ahead than those most recently gone. I wish my fellow contributors o this site season's greetings. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Said To Be Close To Agreement For Russell Martin Replacement at 12:18:55
Perhaps the new man will try playing Onuachu and Archer together with two dedicated wingers. I wish someone would as Tall Paul has no-one to nod down to and Cameron has no-one to feed off. It seems an obvious experiment to me - remember Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips at Sunderland and there are plenty more similar examples, Kane and Son, anyone. |
 | News Comment | Tyler Dibling Disrespected As Newcastle Ready To Pounce at 12:10:29
Irrespective of whether this rumour is true, I find it hard to believe that Tyler will be with us beyond next season at best. I had thought that he has not played as well as he is capable of in the last couple of games so, perhaps he is unsettled but, given our results which young player wouldn't be. Whether a regular starting spot is enough to tempt him to stay as he develops remains to be seen. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Aston Villa The Preview at 11:21:25
At last season's forum Russell told us that he would give us a team we could be proud of. What he didn't say is that this boast would not extend into this season if he got us promoted however, he is claiming to be proud of his team, irrespective it seems as to what the match score is. As a defender himself he should have first sorted out how the back six, including the goalkeeper, blend together and play to their collective abilities. This he has patently failed to do despite four of that six being some of our most talented (Ramsdale, Walker-Peters, Harwood-Bellis, Sugawara). The other two normally being Bednarek (an undoubted trier) and Stephens (rated highly only by Russell himself) - arguably both Bree and Taylor are tidier players than Jack. On balance we are a bottom-six side with the players we have, made undeniably absolutely rock bottom by the idiotic perseverance of suicidal tactics by our manager. In January the club needs to have identified and purchased a Van Dijk type leader, Martin needs to be ordered to adapt or now or go at that time and Sports Republic should apologise for taking our season ticket money under false pretences. Sadly, none of the above will happen. It's an embarrassment. |
