I get the impression Marti likes him a lot, and I'm very keen to see how the manager can help him develop. There's something about him. |
| Forum Reply | Palace put price tag on Eze at 22:57 6 May 2024
Enjoyable watching Palace in current form. I'm a huge Eze fan and think he deserves his shot at a bigger club. But by his own high standards I don't think this was his best showing, unfortunately. He was decent, picked up some good positions, a few good slaloming runs, but in the moments that really mattered he was a bit off (shots on goal, final ball a couple of times). Had a few games out injured so perhaps a tiny bit rusty. I say unfortunately both for him in terms of England squad (don't think he'll make it), and for us in the sense that this was a good 'shop window' opportunity. Of course one game isn't what determines a transfer, so fingers crossed. I can't work out if it's bad news that Olise is also in good form and attracting interest? If he goes first do Palace try to keep Eze? Does interest in Olise mean a club won't also be interested in Eze since they play a similar position (sort of)? |

Wish him all the very best. Committed, hard working, local lad who loves the club. We can all respect that. Think he can have a great lower league career and hope it works out well for him. |
| Forum Reply | Next season - 4 key players for us to keep at 22:38 26 Apr 2024
From a purely footballing perspective, without considering our finances, I'd want to keep: Cook, JCS, Field, Chair. The first two have been the foundation of an upper Championship level defence under Marti; I think the work Field does is vital and we would immediately notice it if he were missing; and Chair is a bit of an emotional pick due to his history and level of effort, and I'd like to see how he would develop in a Marti team with pre-season/any additions, etc. Now taking into account finances, if we got good offers for Chair and JCS, I'd reluctantly sell. Marti has been amazing, so it's fair to give him the chance to rebuild his attack with players that suit him and his style. I do think Chair's holding of the ball can slow us down, and he's not quite as creative with his passing as you might want in that position. But those are minor criticisms - as I said, I'd keep him if we could, would like to see him playing with better around him. If we want to stick to a selling model and need to generate cash, then JCS is pick of the bunch I'd imagine (though I think we'd be in a very strong position to sell with 1 full high performing season under his belt, he'd still be prime centre back age for a move). Best guess is Willock will be off. I like him style wise but not bothered if he goes, freeing his salary up isn't a bad thing. Dykes has shown improvement under Marti, great in last two games, but not good enough overall. Would move him on. Not sure if anyone would come in for Paal, if he stays I think he can improve, if he goes not too bothered. Eze money would be a huge win. Problem is timing: guessing it will be a long drawn out transfer saga. Interested to see it play out. |

Your last point is exactly right. I love all of what Marti has done but one thing we haven't done very often is start aggressively at pace on the front foot - we've been a bit more controlled and coolheaded which I understand is one of the main Marti theses, but if ever there is a game to get up and at 'em in the first 10-20 mins, throwing men forward and rousing the fans, this is it. Beat them mentally and physically before they've settled. Wishful thinking perhaps, but would love to see it... PS Le Tissier was a joy. |
| Forum Reply | Tiger a chance on me but don't let me down Hull Vs QPR Match Thread at 15:26 13 Apr 2024
This is a great example of why it's really important to turn up and take points against the poorer teams. Hull are a good side and if they're on song there's no doubt they have better players than us. Whereas if both teams are playing at the same level we should be beating the likes of Sheff Wed, Plymouth, and others. Tough to see us getting anything from this but credit to the lads for defending for their lives at the moment. To attack them / put under pressure we need pace to stretch. Smyth / Sinclair at HT? Yes not technically the best but they will stretch and open play in the attacking third. |

Unless Hodge is injured that's a real head scratcher. And even if he was, surely Andersen is the better bet with Sincs to come on for Dykes now or later? Worried. |

Lovely bit of work from Hodge to help create that Chair chance. We can't afford to not be be burying that. Slightly unlucky but got to go in. Also nice support from Hodge before that, just didn't get his shot away in time. I like that he makes forward runs from the midfield. We should not lose this game. Bego with a good block v Swans player from close range coming round the back on deep cross. Phew. |

There’s a great view of the goal from the school end where you can se Clarke Salter and Cook as the goal go in. Both, almost in unison, put their hands right on the their heads in sheer disbelief like chair. Priceless. My hands are still on my head now. I will never forget seeing the arc of that one dip over Ruddy from the SA Rd stand. My goodness. And so wonderfully deserved for Dunne. Not the greatest game but we created plenty of decent chances and on that basis deserved to win. Would like to just see a bit more moving forward / running to space once a player plays a pass. Our midfield seem to find that really challenging and it means to move Up the pitch we always have to go back and over to the other side. Which, to be fair, we do reasonably well, but it’s not dynamic. but who cares. What a 3 points. |

I think that’s about right. He also talked about doing what we wanted to do, which was limiting them to no shots for a long time. For me, against a side on a 6 match losing skid with almost a whole first team out, the emphasis should have been on how many shots can we create rather than what can we limit them to. I feel the game was there for the taking. My opinion is nowhere near as valid as Marti’s though, and I generally view him as a messiah for us even being in with a (decent) shout of staying up right now. But that’s how I saw it. Having said that, if Willock scores from Armstrong’s pull back then it’s the perfect away performance. |

Can't believe some of the harshness on Sincs I'm seeing. Yes, his finishing could have been 'better' (wasn't bad against Leicester was it?), yes, a pull back might have been better (after carrying the ball 80 yards by himself - something no other player in our side except perhaps Smyth can do, let alone has done in this game), but he's created 3 of the best attacking situations we had in the whole game in the short time he's been on the pitch (plus a few others). One low hard on target shot at the keeper's feet after running in behind at a tight angle - easily could have gone in. One laid on an absolute plate for Willock who should have scored (maybe just couldn't wrap foot around it, but think that has to go in). I think not starting him and Smyth was a mistake, personally - team on such a losing streak, get right at them rather than just trying to stay solid early doors. On the other hand you could argue bringing them on later allowed them to run at tired defences - fair enough, but would have given Smyth longer. Just my two cents, ultimately we were pretty solid, won the 'stats' battle, had the better chances, should have won. But it's two dropped points in the context of the run in. |

A bit of pace in our side would terrify them and stretch the pitch and open up some holes for Willock chair and Andersen to play in. Good hustling and tackling by us but not been impressive or brave enough with the ball. |

Been going since 1992 and have never once bought a hot food item at the ground. Multiple reasons for that (pre and post match meal traditions sometimes), but the quality on offer is not not one of the reasons… Since you mention it, also never driven to a game, home or away. Always train bus or walk. |

Next games away at Sunderland who've lost their last 6 and Birmingham at home will go a long way to determining outcome of this season. Keep the faith - we know this team can do it and they're not short on effort. |

Ball over top, Smyth takes round Dieng, excellent challenge to deny him from Van Den Berg (I think). Boro look like they have more energy and thrust. For me, too many players looking backwards, not playing the forward ball and not taking on the half turn in pockets of space. To unpick a disciplined opposition, you have to do that. Finely balanced. Jimmy Cafu almost nets a cross from 40 yards by accident |
