 | News Comment | Southampton At Hull City The Verdict at 10:08:57
With the investment options we had during the Summer, I can't believe our FB situation, on either side, so poor. Throw JS into the back line as well and easy to see why we're struggling. I see an idiot above still has a pop at FD , and he wasn't even playing!! CM is not the problem in this side. At Championship level, SC and FD is a good combination. Unfortunately, having problems both behind and in front of CM is something we have, but should never have been allowed to happen. I'm disappointed that WS clearly has no idea of his strongest 11... |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Portsmouth The Verdict at 11:53:44
DoctorSleep, you've clearly never kicked a ball at any level your whole life. The criticism of FD is completely unfounded. His work rate interceptions, tackles, attempts to continually get forward should be commended. When trying to get the ball forward, of course there is more risk, but in no one is trying, we are left with non impact sideways and backward passing. We had a CM fin our recent past who never made a tackle, only passed square or back and yet was adored by Saints fans because of his free kicks. Both WHU and NF have realised since, that's not enough.... |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Portsmouth The Verdict at 11:14:04
Sorry Nick, I think you've been overly biased towards Saints in this report. Yes, you've highlighted faults, but the bottom line is how on earth can we spend 2 weeks preparing for a game and serve up a first half performance like that? Yes, new players, adapting to a different system, but whatever formation or line up, you must compete and you must be brave enough to take responsibility on the ball. We did neither. We did not look comfortable at the back. Roerslev, yes, was up against the best player on the day in Murphy, but other teams will see this game and see we have a weak link there. We were nothing less than lucky to not be behind by HT. Reading his after match comments, WS seems to recognise how poor we were, so I'm really hoping for a strong reaction and a demand on our players that we raise the bar significantly. |
 | News Comment | West Bromwich Albion In Talks For Southampton Defender at 09:13:39
Letting CT go would just be the conclusion to a series of errors and mistakes in the way Saints have treated him since arrival. He's an experienced professional that should have walked into the starting line up week after week. I can't imagine he'll be sorry to go, but never let us down on the few occasions we actually used him. |
 | News Comment | One In And Four Out Likely At Southampton On A Controversial Friday at 14:13:39
Seriously Kenis!!!???? You honestly don't think that the shambles that is our defence, wouldn't benefit from Ben Mees'experience and organisation!!!??? If I questioned your opinion on that, then, to be honest, I don't know where to start on wanting Smallbone to 'force his way into the team'. I have no idea what you've been watching n recent seasons. WS still hasn't learn to turn with the ball yet, let alone force anything.... |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Ipswich Town The Verdict at 09:46:43
I like what we've seen and heard from WS, he's certainly decisive and prepared to take chances if needed. Yes, inevitably there's a 'but' . In the bigger picture it may not seem much, but surely we can all see that, currently at least, we do not have the personnel to play 3 CBs with 2 WBs. RF did a great job yesterday, but playing with 1 WB isn't good enough and we always seem more comfortable with a back 4. Indeed, it's recognised that CB is not a strong position for us at the moment, so why play 3 there!!?? Early days, changes will occur over the next 2 week, but, an away point at Ipswich is decent. |
 | News Comment | Return To Southampton First Team Squad Down To Dibling Says Still at 13:09:20
The comparison between MF and TD is a very valid one. Only 19 months difference in age but a lifetime in difference with attitude. I think it's very unlikely we'll keep MF, as most have said, but what will probably be a short time with the club, his commitment on the pitch has been beyond admirable. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Wrexham The Verdict at 12:15:31
It was uplifting to see that we have a manager prepared to change things, and even gamble when thing aren't working, but I'm sure he'll be looking to not have to endup with 4 up front every week!! Really surprised with a couple of negative comments re Flynn. If there's 1 area we are looking good in, it's midfield. FD and SC must be in each week, then obviously MF for as long as we have him, and RF looked very energetic and always looking to get forward. Really disappointing was our starting full backs. Wellington is young, yes, but he should know already not to commit so early, and Sugawara should know how to take a throw in by now - twice, in a few minutes, the 2nd of which led to Wrexham breaking away and ending up with a penalty, he threw the ball, not to feet, which he could have, but to somewhere between chest and head height, basics!! He also looked poor going forward, we definitely will miss KWP. Great atmosphere, good energy throughout the team, but some tweaking needed to make such dominant possession count for something. |
 | News Comment | Southampton Defender Linked With Move To Championship Rivals at 13:49:27
The non use of CT by the 3 managers last season, particularly RM, is just another ridiculous decision in a catalogue of them over the last 12 months. He showed his quality when allowed and would be a great asset in the Championship. Very disappointed with this, if it happens. |
 | News Comment | Will Russell Martin Break Rangers Transfer Record In Southampton Raid at 11:16:46
I've always been disappointed to read any detrimental comments about Downes on this site over the last season. I really do believe he's a player, who like KWP, always put a shift in and could never be criticized for not trying. On top of that, he always looks to get the ball forward where he can, and when the option to pass forward is not there, 1 of the few players we have who is prepared to carry the ball forward. Plus always prepared to put his foot in when required. I've seen comments over the season about him far too often passing square or back - I'm a season ticket holder and don't recognise these comments at all. If those comments had been aimed at JWP in previous seasons, then I would have agreed. In brief, FD is a definite asset and will be a great loss if he goes. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict at 12:25:03
All comments above sum up the season and the game on Sunday. I will though just repeat one point- that I know would never change the outcome of the season, but how can 3 managers this season virtually ignore Charlie Taylor???? His tackles, interceptions, blocks and general positioning and organisation on Sunday just screamed out, why wasn't he used? Let's hope WS has more sense..... |
 | News Comment | Dragan Solak Speaks Out About Ivan Juric at 15:15:19
I really don't understand the growing number of digs on this site at Flynn Downes. Yes, fans will always have differing opinions, but I honestly believe that FD is a quality player, but playing a central role (when he is allowed to play there) in a very poor PL team. His mobility, tenacity and, normally, his distribution is good. He does need the right partner alongside him in CM. I still believe, within our current crop of players, that should have been SC...albeit , any change is too late now for this season. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Newcastle United The Verdict at 11:51:29
I think we can all agree we , Saints, can feel a tad aggrieved with Saturdays' officiating, but, please, let's be honest: - VAR is an excellent tool, it's how it's used that needs changing. - VAR is not the reason we lost on Saturday - It's how we've been run as a Football Club that has landed us where we are. I'm fed up hearing Saints fan say that there is a bias against smaller clubs, and often adding they'd rather we were in the Championship...which we will be in May. Ask, Fulham fans, Brighton/Notts Forest, B'mouth and even Palace fans what they think of the Prem. They're loving see their teams compete in the PL - we've been there, been in that enviable position, and will be again, but not under this regime. So, let's stop feeling sorry for ourselves, and as mentioned in an earlier post, focus our frustration on what can be done to remove the current administration.... |
 | News Comment | Shea Charles Could Be About To Cross The Sheffield Footballing Divide at 12:39:35
Sorry Nick, we should keep him with us now. Yes, I agree it will not be the most joyous experience until the end of the season, but even at international level he has proved himself to be not only a talented player, with a strong physical presence and good distribution, but also a mature individual. He'll deal with it and be stronger next season....as long as we actually play him!! Unlike the idiot RM.... |
 | News Comment | Shea Charles On The Radar Of 3 Top Flight Clubs at 12:09:03
Sorry Bowlercrow, if you couldn't see the potential of SC that should have been encouraged and developed in the Championship in readiness for the Prem, then you're in the same league as RM. He is a perfect partner for FD and to see him sat on the bench last season whilst WS started time and time again was criminal. He's now showing the ability that should have been displayed at St Marys, hence the PL attention from other clubs. Many of us were continuously making that point last season. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Chelsea The Preview at 11:49:20
A reasonable overview, particularly of the CT and ABK status - but, to bring them in, as you state, would be putting the team first, not RMs ego....which is the flaw in that option.... |
 | News Comment | Southampton Will Recall One Player But Send Another To Sheffield Wednesday at 10:31:33
SC deserves far more than just a 'cover' role at Saints. A CM combination of him and FD would allow a real focus on playing and encouraging our attacking players such as MF and TD to get forward as much as possible. SC should never been allowed to go out on loan. He has a strong physical presence, very calm on the ball with good distribution and at just 21 is very mobile. We need him back....it's probably too late, we have to concede that, but let's at least make a fight of it by playing our best 11 each week - and that includes bringing CT into the starting line up. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Liverpool The Verdict at 10:39:45
What has Charlie Taylor done to upset RM???? If there has been a falling out, then RM needs to park his ego. and along with CT, sit in a room, then with ABK and sort whatever has gone wrong. We can't afford to have players who can make a positive contribution not even making the bench, let alone the starting 11. I truly believe RM is an egotistical idiot.... |
