Self-inflicted defeat. Coasting at 3-1 and surrendered the initiative by making unneeded substitutions, affecting our shape and immediately making us vulnerable, despite one of the substitutions supposedly making us more solid. Such a shame after working so hard to get into a dominant position. |

Early balls into the box needed, not easy though when we generally have right footed players on the left and vice versa. Lost count of how many times we cut back inside and the attack fizzled out. Gilmour's shot was the only time we looked like scoring from open play. |

First half probably the best we've played away since maybe Aldershot. Second half was starting to look familiar after missing early chances but stuck in there and found a deserved winner. Back 3, Gilmour and Rodney all immense and Barrett's best showing so far, some great saves. Need to push on to finish 4th or 5th and be ruthless Monday - Fylde relegated today. |

Awful news. Not only a club and town legend but became so widely admired across the whole football community and beyond because of the man he was, as shown by the volume of tributes and posts on social media this morning. RIP Joe. |

There will never be any searching questions asked. Great win and performance today against a team on the beach by all accounts (am an exile so wasn't there) but the true tests and big games all lie ahead |

Without Bird we look a bit toothless. Need to get the ball in the box more often - still tend to check back too much. Maidenhead put it in the the danger area more often. Another frustrating watch against a team with inferior players. |

Good point on paper, just need to develop a bit more ruthlessness to become a top side and put games like that to bed. Invited pressure and succumbed in the end, bit disappointing against a mediocre team lacking in ideas. Bird looks the full package - big, strong, mobile and quick with good feet. Great bit of recruitment, as is Kingdon - Van Dijk would have been proud of his turn in the 2nd half that sent two defenders for a hot dog. Sounds concerning about Easty, fingers crossed he's OK and back to good health soon. |

Great to watch - felt like a throwback, attacking the Sandy in the 2nd half with proper purpose, confidence and intensity. The busy schedule actually seems to be giving us energy - maybe play, rest and play again rather than getting too bogged down with training and preparation is helping in a way (obviously allied to a building sense of belief as well). Bird makes a huge difference and the defence, marshalled by Hogan, is looking assured with Kingdon showing maturity beyond his years. Also both the midfield and Waller probably our best in those positions for some time. |

There's too much of an ideological focus to the style of play and formation, it never changes no matter which game or situation within a game. McNulty feels like more of a coach than a manager - a manager would be more pragmatic and shake things up when required. Today and Tuesday were crying out to take off a centre half when bringing on a forward in the second half. |

Good tactical substitutions and game management as well, the sort we often see against us. |

Pitch can't be an excuse and wouldn't be for a team for a team aiming for promotion - need to plan for these sort of away games and have the ability to adapt and get a result. |

Lacklustre and passive, second best in desire, fitness, organisation and tactics. No idea why McBride played as the central forward with Rodney as inside right - bizarre. It's this sort of game that makes JM look like more of a coach than a manager. |

Must be too much to ask to ensure we don't give anything away early doors when playing away to one of the best teams in the league who've won every home home game so far and smarting on the back of two away defeats, and effectively repeat exactly what we did here last season. You could already see they were pressing high in the first couple of mins. Not even naivety, it's stupidity. |

Their two left sided players were excellent. Would happily have either of them join us. |
 | Forum Reply | Southend Match Thread at 20:25 19 Oct 2024
Agree, was frustrating to watch. There were a few occasions where the ultra-safe option was taken and the ball went back/sideways when there was space to move into, and forward passes to be tried, as if the instruction was just to keep the ball at all costs. You win games by being progressive and taking a few risks, not constantly recycling possession. |

3 year plan for promotion but if we're still at this level in 2 years we won't be achieving it playing pedestrian football at home, particularly against teams in the bottom half. Aspiring managers like Jim play this way partly because they want to progress their careers and be noticed but as a playing style it isn't going to get you out of a division like this. Passing football as a philosophy is great and better than lumping it but it has to be much quicker and with greater purpose that what we just saw. Wonder how much analysis has been done by the owners and staff into how Chesterfield, Wrexham and Stockport managed to win promotion - admittedly clubs with bigger budgets who could afford better players, but they didn't play many first halves at home as if if they were training sessions. |

Outstanding performance, to shut out the top scorers so far and hardly give them a sniff second half is excellent. Gordon and TAR brilliant again and the keeper looked good, and Kairo looks so much confident now after last week, made good runs, was strong and held the ball up well. Gilmour and East a class apart too, can't remember a time when we had such a good midfield unit. Also shout out to the game management and substitutions by Jim, very astute. |

Not sure why you'd want to meddle with the back 3 given their form and with a new keeper coming in. Or for that matter why you'd bench Henry, would have thought Gilmour would come in for East if anyone, but again why change it. |

We're in year 1 of the three year plan and we're better than this time last year. To get promoted we'll need to splash more money and get a Mullin or Grigg or similar. Big picture feels like we're doing ok. |
