Agree with you not Nardi’s ball - Cook should have done better with the long ball -and the second just fell perfect for the striker following Varanes header. Madsen and Varane not the same in the second half allowing Millwall’s midfield to take over. Thought Vale was ineffective today especially his final ball and our crossing was woeful Have seen us play a lot worse and get all three points just wasn’t our day.
You are right in saying that Kelman wasnt fit to lace his boots but Allen was a true goalscorer. Jimmy Greaves wasn’t fast or tall neither was Denis Law but they could finish and so could Allen. In my opinion all three would rightly cost a fortune in todays market.
All defences need a keeper that will come and dominate crosses into the box - unfortunately neither of the two can do that. There is also no dominant centre back either to help them out which puts even more pressure on the keeper. ‘Paid off immensely” is not something I can agree with - I do not think Walsh is experienced enough and certainly hasn’t played regularly at this stage in his career - as has been said a loan season would have helped him but that ship has sailed. May not be a view many share but I think we should have tried to sign another keeper.
Locals view seems to be that not same since injury - left back his best position but have been playing him in centre so not at his best - steady at best apparently
Think you’re being kind Northern - long-standing supporters have been fed up for a long time now - regretfully loads of us have voted with our feet and not moved from our sofas for a number of years and the sad thing about it is we haven’t missed it enough to want to come back. Apart from the Leeds victory a couple of seasons ago imo we’ve rarely put in a 90 minute show to kick us up the backside into renewing our season tickets.
The question is where does the buck stop for letting Dykes and Sinclair go and replacing them with only Celar. Frey was here last season and the strike force was not good enough then and whoever sanctioned going into this season expecting them both to stay fit for all 46 matches needs to take a hard look at themself.
Think you’re being too kind to him - brief cameos against Luton and Oxford - two of the poorer sides in the division make him a long way off being a really useful player in my opinion. Nothing to do with the state of the team all to do with his lack of impact when given. The opportunity
Problem is 20 minutes out of a season says it all really and against probably one of the worst two teams in the division. Looked an interesting recruit when signed albeit competing in a much lower standard. Unfortunately hasn’t cut the mustard - youngsters that have come in because of injuries have had much more of an impact. If you don’t put yourself about you have to have the ability that lets you get away with that unfortunately he doesn’t - not his fault we spent so much on him but think they will try to unload him in the summer.
Agree with you - a little more confident but not home and dry- on the player take but a little harsh on Bennie - playing out of position and up against the normal physical championship centre backs. Unfortunately either says a lot about our injury situation or that Marti doesn’t think much of the others - hopefully Kolli. will be available next game - with Saito and Dembele playing their part too but it is how lightweight we are up front that worries me the most.
Agreed. To have so many ball players in the side is great but you also need players that will get dirty and take one for the team. All those three have taken stick for the number of bookings they’ve had yet when not there our other midfield players are over run. Field went off yesterday and in my opinion even in that short time we became too lightweight again and boy did we need that finish from Yang to settle the nerves.
Whoever was responsible for the strategy of only having two strikers at the start of the season has to take a lot of responsibility for the position we are in. Neither Frey or Celar have set the world alight even allowing for the injuries they’ve both had. It has led to too much responsibility falling on the shoulders of youngsters still learning their trade. The second contender for the biggest mistake was whoever sanctioned spending the sort of money we did on Madsen - I just do not see what he brings to the table. If yesterday was a good performance from him it shows the low level that he has performed to the rest of the time. A wins a win but Oxford were poor - we still have a lot to do.
Varane and Frey both justify their positions - the wide men and Chair benefit from his style of play but he does not score enough to be the main striker . Madsen is the one that so far has shown very little.
