In 1969 an RAF VC10 thankfully flew us out of Libya, our Regiment were desert training when Gaddafi started his coup. An arrangement was made with the British Government that we could leave the Country unopposed. As you flew past the libyan coast you could see sunken ships In the Mediterranean Sea from the second world war.
I understand where your coming from, I retired/left on a Friday on the following Sunday evening I was having a soak In the bath when the Missus walked In and said now your retired what are you gonna do tomorrow (Monday) my answer was nothing I'm gonna do nothing and I ain't gonna worry about It either. And that was It, I was In a high pressure job, I was the point of contact with our clients for getting our retention monies, getting all the final sign off certificates signed off, It was greif from Monday through to Friday arguing with our clients who'd come up with any old bolox and reasons not to pay us what was due. That weight of responsibility being lifted of my shoulders was incredible, at some stage In life you have to think long and hard and do what's best for you and your Family. As I said earlier I was looked after by my Company but I returned that by always turning up and putting a shift In.
It's a lovely day outside and I've been In the garden with the Missus, cup of tea when we want one, do what we want dont got to answer to one anymore, spreadsheets my arse.
All of us who've retired get together In Weatherspoon's every three Months and talk complete Old Mens bolox, yep this is as good as It gets.
Mate, at the age of 65 I made the mistake of just carrying on going to work, my Construction Company never asked me If and when I was gonna knock It on the head and as a result I worked on for another three Years. One Sunday evening I said to the Missus I've got a real stinker of a week coming up at work, meetings with two faced horrible, lying clients etcetera, the Missus said FGS hand your notice In which I duly did the next day. My firm were absolutely brilliant with me, looked after me financially and with benefits until the day I left. My absolute biggest mistake though was not retiring at the age of 65, I still feel aggrieved about It because being retired Is In all honesty brilliant.
Obviously circumstances dictate just about everything but being fully retired Is just fantastic.
Great holiday Island If you happen to be Into a good all Year climate and Fauna & Flora. That runway at both ends has a sheer drop into the ocean. We've been there five times and each landing has been brilliant.
Chicago airport Is bloody huge, I landed there on my way to Memphis (connecting flight) It took me nigh on 45 minutes to to walk to the Memphis departure gate. (as per usual In the States the Memphis flight was overbooked and at the departure gate there was utter chaos).
Biman Bangladesh Airlines an aged 737 coming into land at Nepal airport, we hit a tropical storm on the way In, on the first attempt to land we were battered relentlessly by the wind and rain, we were about 100 feet above what looked like the runway, the pilot opened up the throttle and went straight back up, second attempt was even worse as the wheels actually touched down with a bloody loud bang, we bounced up and the pilot once again opened up the throttles and once more we went straight up again, this time though kids were screaming and the stink of vomit circulated the cabin. I was right at the front two seats as the only White bloke on the plane, I said to the the bloke next to me (hoping he spoke English (WTF Is going on?) he spoke perfect English and told me he lived In Kathmandu as a Nepalese businessman a frequent flyer but had never experienced anything like this before. After getting up In the air again the Pilot eventually spent Two minutes explaining what he was gonna do next, the bloke next to me translated for me that the Idiot was gonna try and land the plane again. Add landing attempt One and Two together and that was the result of his third attempt at landing. We flew back up In the air again turned left and flew back to Bangladesh, there are two seats at the front of the plane where the stewardesses sit, both those Girls were terrified.
I'd already seen Mount Everest with the sun rising behind It from my journey from Kuwait to Bangladesh but I wanted to go to the Everest base camp, which I never got round to actually doing.
