Our Defence is fragile?
at 10:41 4 Dec 2012

I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple come in during January, but we'd have to sell a couple first I think. If we are going to get another forward in, then we'll probably have to get rid of one first. It won't be Sammon, as he's only just arrived, but I suppose we might see Tyson or even Theo go.

Can't see much happening with the defence, I think Nigel will stick with what he's got with the promise of Barker coming back eventually, plus some of the younger lads taking over in the next season or two.

Our Defence is fragile?
at 11:55 3 Dec 2012

I don 't understand why Freeman couldn't have started. Our left back is injured, so playing another other left back seems to me to be sensible. As you said, O'Connor isn't suited to playing there. And Keogh has hit a sticky patch, but I think he's good enough to come out of it. To me his problems seem to come from the fact that he doesn't always read what's happening too well, resulting in him either being caught out of position, or trying too hard to get back into the right place and being penalised for a desperate tackle.

Defence was poor at times on Saturday, midfield was reasonable, but we were toothless again up front. We don't have a forward who is nasty enough around goal. Look at Waghorn and Nugent on Saturday, they just look like they're going to score. We haven't got anyone who you could describe in that way, they all seem reluctant to shoot at times. I can't work out why Sammon always seems to shoot with his left foot, as he always slices it with little power. There can't be too many centre halves in the Championship that would worry about being up against Robinson and Sammon.

The Blame Game!
at 16:35 5 Nov 2012

But what a difference a week makes. O'Connor in for Buxton, and Bryson in for Jacobs, otherwise the same team against Blackpool as it was against Peterborough. And there didn't seem to be too much in the way of negative tactics on Saturday - Robinson off maybe was, as he was on a hat-trick, but if he'd not been training all week, then it was probably sensible.

I can't criticise Clough for what he says about the players - he's mostly right in what he says (IMO), and I reckon he balances it out easily enough by what he says to them thats not quoted in the papers.

I can sometimes criticise him for his substitutions, and they baffled me ten days ago.

But he has got Derby playing some decent football most of the time. I think the squad is too thin rather than lightweight. If Bryson's not playing then I think we struggle - he's like a fly-wheel, never stops moving and makes the rest of the team push on. I'd still like to see Bailey here as cover - either that or we need to get in another centre-mid.

I've seen a few assessments of Saturday that say Blackpool were poor. I'm not sure I agree, I think Derby just battered them. I'm sure Holloway leaving had an effect on Blackpool, but they would have got beaten anyway - I think most Championship teams would have been beaten by us on Saturday.

So the trick is to find some consistency. Maybe the best thing for us for Tuesdays game would be for Barnsley to come and go all-out to save a point. Lets see how we cope with that sort of opposition, rather than a side that want to play.

Nothing Less then 3 Pts tonight
at 12:37 19 Sep 2012

For the first hour or so, we had no difficulty keeping the ball, Charlton hardly got a touch. So it's worrying that once they got one goal back, we find that we can't keep the ball at all. The defence looked completely different once we'd conceded, all the decisiveness we'd seen for most of the game disappeared. But I think the main thing is that once we do concede, we really need to keep hold of the ball further up the pitch. I think Fuller made a big difference to Charlton when he came on, we should be wise enough to make them constantly chase the ball. All this "boot it into the corner" rubbish doesn't work, we need to keep on doing what we do at the start of games.

I can see some logic in the game moving to Good Friday, but not the others.

Jason Shackell?
at 17:08 29 Jun 2012

You're right, I think everyone who watched Championship football last season knows that Shackell is better than Mills, so I don't think the £5m tag means anything now. But the Mills thing was just something that popped into my mind - I don't want to start it as a rumour, there are enough of those around regarding Shackell anyway.

Your question about choosing a striker or a defender. I'd want both. We need the striker now anyway, and if we did lose a defender he'd need to be replaced. Although if I really had to choose, I'd have a striker. Good defence and bad strikers means lots of 0-0's, bad defence and good strikers and maybe a few 4-4's. At least it'd be entertaining.

I fear it will be O'Brien AND Buxton, but I really hope that Shackell is still here when the window closes. It just looks increasingly like he won't be.

It's only paper talk so far, but some of Nigel's quotes seem to be preparing for a transfer. The crucial bit of information missing is whether Shackell himself wants to go; in his position, I'd be saying nothing at this point. If someone wants to pay him lots more money, then I daresay he'll fancy it.

I just hope we don't swap him for Matt Mills.

Maguire?

I agree with Hemingway. I've not been overly impressed with Maguire in the little that I've seen of him. I hope he can find some form and come back next season and push for a place, but I'm not sure I'd have him in the side just now ahead of Robinson or Davies. Or Ball for that matter. Maybe ahead of Tyson.......

Steven Davies

It was a good team performance last night, after a slow start. Davies looks like he wants to make up for lost time. I liked the shape last night, but I don't like the idea of pushing Bryson out wide with Carroll in the middle. I thought Hendrick played well, although he gave the ball away a time or two he got his foot in all game. We've been missing that in the last few weeks.

Well, here are a few pointers for Nigel to help him explain it.

1. Tyson isn't a winger.
2. Steve Davies isn't a winger.
3. Bryson needs to play in the middle, not get shoved out on the left.
4. Constantly shifting your midfield 3 means they can't remember where they are supposed to be, or where the other two are.
5. Some people just had a bad game (Ball, Barker, Carroll, Green for me. And probably a few others)
6. We didn't create a coherent move for about 70 minutes.
7. We may have a whole bunch of "strikers" but we haven't got a centre forward. There's a difference.
8. It's difficult to score goals if you don't shoot. And when you do shoot, it helps if it's on target.

10% increase for next season
at 17:21 9 Feb 2012

Thinking about this, and whether to renew or not. My first thought is that I'll probably renew. But then I constantly hear about freebies, reductions and Groupons and stuff, but I never actually see any of these offers at the time. (Although I just had a look on the Groupon site and you could have got two tickets for the Leicester game for £20.)

So, who's been going on a match by match basis, where do you get the offers from and is it worth chucking the season ticket and tarting around for cheapies every match?

10% increase for next season
at 17:14 9 Feb 2012

I think the refund offer was always a safe bet for GSE. They knew it would probably tempt people to renewing with a view to getting a refund, but then by the time the season came around we'd all be back into the routine of going to the game and wouldn't bother.

What would have been a braver (but much riskier) move would have been to offer a refund until the end of the summer transfer window. A bad start and a no new "key" players would have created a queue at the refunds desk. Although with the start we had this season maybe it would have been a gamble that would have paid off.

Noble?
at 17:08 9 Feb 2012

Better than what we already had? Probably not.
Fitter than what we already had? Yes, since we'd got Tyson, Davies and Robinson injured, Maguire out of favour and a teenager being our best forward.

So I'm with Hemingway, it's a non-story. We needed short term cover, and we got some. We don't need it so much now, but if Sunderland had let him play in the cup, and if Sunday's game hadn't been called off then maybe he'd have had a few more games by now.

Transfers!
at 17:46 26 Jan 2012

We're starting to look a bit light on numbers, regardless of the quality.

Looking at our current side, we've got the following.

GK - Fielding - cover Legzdins
Back Four - Brayford, Barker, Shackell, Roberts - cover Buxton, Naylor
Mid - Green, Bryson, Bailey, Ward - cover BDavies, Hendrick
Forwards - Robinson, Ball - cover Maguire, SDavies, Tyson, Noble, Doyle, Bennett

So that's a squad of 22, 8 of which (9 if you count Ward) are forwards.

Top 6 or cup run ?

Cup run please. I'm happy to finish 7th in the league, then storm the Championship next season with our established squad, plus a copule of big-money signings.

Now, where did I put my medication........

Ryan Noble to Sign?
at 15:07 17 Jan 2012

I was hoping for an established striker. I think the problem is that we have loads of forwards, none of which are really capable of leading the line.

Tyson and Davies - never fit,
Ball - shaping up really well, but needs some experience next to him,
Theo - can't think how to describe him really, just "Theo",
Bennett - not ready yet,
Cwyka - written off, it seems,
Maguire - not good enough.

Hopefully Noble will prove a good signing, but I've no idea who NC would have up front if they were all fit.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. It would be nice if Palace were pre-occupied, but maybe they'll have a few players who want to make sure they earn a place for the League Cup. I think we'll edge it though.

As for the Coventry match, only 3 points will do.
