RamZone Match Roundup - Derby Soar Only To Sink!
Sunday, 6th Nov 2011 12:14 by Daniel J Sewart

The Rams burst out of the blocks and looked like making short work of the newly promoted Posh. Instead Ferguson’s men fought back and stole the points from Clough’s Derby at the death.

Match Summary:

After dominating the opening 30 minutes and carving out some decent chances – the Rams finally broke through when Theo Robinson sped through the Posh offside trap and finished truly.

Minutes later Robinson added a second when he was on the end of a clever through ball from Jamie Ward and clinically slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

The Posh began their fight back just before half time when Paul Taylor got the home team back into the contest.

After the break it was Tommy Rowe who squared things up when he flicked the ball out of Frank Fielding’s reach.

Both teams stepped up a gear in an attempt to find a winner with good chances created but it looked as if both would have to settle for a point.

That was until the last minute of injury time when Grant McCann's rifled a left-footed volley into goal and the travelling Rams fans hearts.

A huge opportunity lost for Clough and his men, one that will haunt them for two weeks as they now head into the international break.

Manager’s Reaction:

Nigel Clough was very, very frustrated after the match:

"We're as frustrated as we have been for some time and I think the disappointment of this one will linger on for quite a while.  To give a two goal lead away at any point is disappointing away from home so it goes without saying we're frustrated we didn't even get a point.”

"We knew Peterborough posed a massive threat and it is just a hammer blow for the boys after playing well and scoring two goals to come away with nothing to show for it and it will irk us until we get back into action in two weeks.”

"To have gone into the international break on 25 points would have been lovely but to lead 2-0 and get nothing come the end isn't nice. We lost it collectively today so it isn't about individuals and the fact we didn't go in 2-0 up at half time gave them a chance to get back into the game.”

"That gave them a sniff of getting back in the game and they took it. Then, with two minutes to go, we needed to see the game out even though we had been in a winning position to come back with a point would have been at least something for our performance.”

"Last season we conceded too many goals late on and we thought we were past all that, but we're obviously not. We had chances as well to see them off; Theo had a good one to make it 3-0 and in the second half we had opportunities as well.”

"I think at 3-0 it would have been a big ask for Peterborough to come back, but it didn't happen and we gave some soft goals away today. That's six in the last two matches so we need to improve at the back when we return from the break."

"We have a two week break now to re-group, re-fresh and get some players back. Shaun Barker and John Brayford are the two key ones because they've been big players for his for as long as they've been here.”

"Despite today we have to be positive, build on what we've achieved so far and get some bodies back."

Player Reaction:

Theo Robinson was gutted his Derby double was not enough to win the day:

"The lads are pretty quiet, down and upset.”

"We played well today and were two goals in front so we're all hurting and disappointed we didn't get, at the very least, a point from the game. I had been substituted midway through the second half and had been for treatment when I heard the winner go in.”

"I couldn't believe it and the lads were gutted when they came in at the end. We're all hurting but I'm sure we'll come back firing against Hull in two weeks at Pride Park."

"It was a great chance and perhaps the game would have been over at that point, but I guess we'll never know now."

"It was great to be back (from a hamstring injury) and scoring but I'd have swapped getting two goals for a win. Those goals gave me confidence but I should really have got my hat-trick."

"It's just frustrating we didn't hold on for at least a point."
