RamZone match reporter I.Saw took the trip to Ipswich only to see Paul Jewell put one over his former club in controversial circumstances.

Thoughts on Ipswich 1 - Derby 0

Barely had we regained our seats, scoffed our free mince pies and sipped at our lukewarm coffee at the start of the second half before this game was grabbed, shook up and throw back at us.

For thirty eight seconds after Ipswich kicked off we were safe, then the Officials stopped, had a word or two together and awarded a goal to Ipswich.

It was a harsh decision in the manner it was awarded even if the Assistant Referee was correct that the ball had crossed the line. No flag was raised, no indication given until the chit chats many seconds later. Even the tannoy announced the goal was “accredited to Keith Andrews” as if they didn’t know either.

We felt cheated, pure and simple.

What followed was Derby trying desperately to get back into the game, the addition of Theo Robinson, two up front. We slung on Nathan Tyson, three attackers. Then by the end Jason Shackell added his weight as a centre forward, to make it four in a line.

A valiant attempt perhaps but the real need was for a quality ball into the forwards and on that front the Rams were sadly lacking.

Our normal provider Jamie Ward was expertly handled by Carlos Edwards, through out the whole game Ward only managing to escape his marker on a couple of occasions. Craig Bryson had a good shot well saved but otherwise a quiet game.

Still it normally takes more than one man to influence a result, today it needed two.

Rams Man Of The Match:

Gareth Roberts - Possibly not a popular choice but for me had an excellent game at left full back.

Referee:

David Webb - 6/10. Started this game by trying to allow the football to flow. Consequently let rather too much go for my tastes with a penchant for favouring the Tractor Boys.

The major call was the goal, whether the ball had or had not crossed the line the communications between the Officials was unclear and poor.

oldbri added 18:15 - Dec 19 Hi,I suppose what you want to hear is,yes ,we were cheated. Can I refer you to Football referee.org,the web site of the referees association. Check out the rules of the game and look for communication with the referee.You will find the following :- Goal Scored: To confirm a valid goal has been scored, an Assistant Referee should display clear movement down the touchline towards the centre line. In borderline cases, this movement should be clear (sprint) to be recognised by the Referee. To confirm a goal, the Assistant Referee should not raise his flag. If in his opinion a goal has not been scored correctly, the Assistant Referee should stand still, retaining any signal already given. The Referee may then choose to consult further if he needs additional guidance. I think you will find that ,this is what the assistant referee did. Someone should do some research before opening ones mouth.

"If in his opinion a goal has not been scored correctly, the Assistant Referee should stand still" however in practise this is translated as if the ball is then cleared off the line and kicked upfield the AR would just follow play and run up the field. Of course if he stood still he would be out of position. Clearly not desirable. In borderline cases, this movement should be clear (sprint) to be recognised by the Referee." Again with the ball being cleared the AR runs up the line very similar to a goal not being scored. It can be difficult to seperate the two actions.The only way of distinguishing between these two cases is for the Assistant Referee to run PAST the play to the half way line. This I didn't see at Ipswich, did you? In the my time a Linesman was asked to give a clear signal if a goal had been scored, and then back to the half way line as fast as possible so that it was harder for players to protest the decision. Some time things aren't clear and a simple raising of a flag once then a sprint was in my mind a clearer system, however in the current days of the Officials being miked up there is no excuse for a eight or nine second delay as to whether a ball has crossed the line IMO and that is where the comments come from. Poor refereeing from all concerned. Cheers I Saw

ramdanj added 13:14 - Dec 20 Research does not need to come into how one feels a match or decision unfolded. I think it's a shame that what could be constructive criticism becomes insulting with a "before one opens ones mouth" snipe. It would be nice if people were as willing to get involved and submit their own articles rather than take snide jibes. But the first is obviously easier.... shame. Brilliant work I.Saw, you need explain nothing. Great report as always! :)

oldbri added 18:20 - Dec 20 Hi Ramdanj,my comments were not meant to be insulting to I.Saw.However ,at the end of the day,a perfectly good goal was scored and the match officials came to the correct decision.There is nothing more frustrating than to see a goal disallowed because of a refereeing error,for either side.Unless of course ,you want to win at all costs.
