Pre-Season Guide To...Cambridge United

2004/2005 Preview - Cambridge United

LAST SEASON

Cambridge were another club flirting around us in mid table come last May, with a 13th place finish and only goal difference denying them a place in the top half.

WHAT HAVE THEY BEEN UP TO THIS SUMMER?

Very little seems to have happened this summer at the Abbey Stadium with only Jermain Easter (Hartlepool) and Ashley Nicholls (Darlington) arriving as new additions into the squad. Cambridge fans were excited with the talk of a French signing but surely the question has to be is Sully Seychelles a real name? Apparently so!

WHO ARE THEIR FAMOUS FANS?

Make of this what you will

Jamie Oliver

Mark B & Blade who apparently are a hip hop group

5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT CAMBRIDGE

  1. It's the 40th year of the ever so well known (!) Cambridge Folk Festival this summer, this time featuring such well known acts as the Belles amd Polly Paulusma (what is it with silly names and Cambridge) Don't worry if you cannot make it, it's on Radio 2 - allegedly!

  2. Cambridge are one of only two teams to have competed in every boat race since it started - Oxford are the other

  3. The visit Cambridge web site tells you that Cambridge was important well before the university existed. Which tends to suggest that people only know of it now because of the university.

  4. Cambridge is claimed to be the place that inspired Darwin, Newton, AA Milne, Wordsworth, Stephen Hawking, John Cleese, Eric Idle and Graham Chapman. Inspired them for what is a mystery to everyone but it inspired them anyway

  5. It's clear that those in Cambridge prefer to do other things as this summer for the first time, Cambridge will open it's doors to it's attractions to it's residents free of charge. Bet that pushes the house prices up!

ARE WE ANY GOOD AGAINST CAMBRIDGE?

Not bad, Cambridge have won just 12 of the 36 meetings between the clubs, although it should be noted the Swans have only won 16. Five goals is the difference between the two clubs in those meetings in our favour. It should be noted that it was 10 years since we last won at the Abbey Stadium until last season. full list of results, click here

WHEN DO WE PLAY THEM?

We travel to Cambridge on the Saturday of Bank Holiday weekend and they reverse that fixture at the Vetch on April 2 next year, the first of the three last games at the Vetch

IF I WANT TO FIND OUT MORE WHERE DO I GO?

Their official site seems pretty updated and you have the Rivals version below which has quite a nice logo.

WHAT ARE THEIR CHANCES NEXT SEASON?

Sorry to say this Cambridge fans but 13th last season will be better than you manage this time around. 16th-20th I think.

Why not check out the latest Vetch Verdict on the BBC site?
