What I.Saw: Can We Find 10 More Rams Like Him Please?
Sunday, 5th Mar 2017 13:32 by I.Saw
Finally a win, the hard way. Coming from behind, the Derby way perhaps.
Barnsley were the visitors to Pride Park, the Rams beaten at Blackburn the previous time out made changes. In came Matej Vydra who impressed as a sub mid-week, in came Olsson for Max Lowe and Will Hughes dropped to the bench.
We start, more direct, longer ball football, 4-2-3-1 the official view of the formation. We struggle, the Tykes camp out in the Derby half. A long, long throw from Marc Roberts in front of us reaches the six yard box, it causes havoc, luckily only a corner results.
A brief respite as the ball flashed past our far post as Adam Hammill almost scores.
As the first half progresses we settle yet it's hardly fluent football, Julian de Sart, Johnny Russell and Tom Ince have half chances.
Second half and Jacob Butterfield replaces de Sart who had been subject of a crunching tackle which earned Andy Yiadom a deserved yellow card.
Cyrus Christie, with the outside of his right foot fires the ball across the front of the Barnsley goal, Ince, onrushing, slides in but can't quite make contact.
Then we trail. Another throw in, we stand and watch as Matty James rises highest and powers the ball past Scott Carson and into the net.
We respond almost immediately as Ince and a toe poke levels the scores.
Our confidence returns, we surge forwards, we win a free kick, Ince takes, their keeper saves.
Russell, who was far more involved than midweek also forces a save out of Adam Davies before Ince from a narrow angle six yards out sees his shot deflected and bounce off the post and out for a corner.
We look most likely to. And we do.
Nugent, picks the ball up in the box, turns and his shot skids of a defender and into the back of the net to give us Rams a 2-1 lead.
It’s pelting it down, in the East Stand Upper we are getting wet. We don't mind.
On the pitch we nearly score again, this time Christie sees his shot blocked on the line.
Barnsley press for an equaliser, we are nervous but we hold.
The final whistle. A victory at last.
My man of the match was Nugent, in recognition for all the hard work and effort put in by Nugent both today and on Tuesday he chased everything, he was dead on his feet with ten to go, you could see the pain on his face as he pushed his body on.
He throughly deserved his goal too.
Now can we find ten more like him… please!?
