Southampton Start Season With Wrexham Media Circus In Town
Friday, 27th Jun 2025 06:41

Saints start back in the Championship with a game against Hollywood movie stars plaything Wrexham, then a month later comes the first game against old rivals Portsmouth. It’s going to be a rollercoaster.

Wrexham aren’t my favourite club, although many see it as a fairytale rags to riches story, i see it as club that historically hasn’t got the fanbase to support a club much above League One level, being used as a millionaire’s plaything, which will ultimately end in tears.

So it would give me great pleasure to see them despatched with aplomb on the seasons opening weekend, the game is on Saturday 9th August with a 12.30 kick off, meaning an early start for the Welsh clubs fans.

The dates we are all looking for though are the fixtures against Portsmouth, they arrive at St Mary’s in September,, at the moment its on for Saturday the 13th but this date & time likewise the return fixture at `Fratton Park on Saturday 24th January are likely to both be moved for not just TV , but also to accommodate the NATO peacekeeping force that will be required.

Other notable fixtures are the Xmas period when we will travel to Oxford United on Boxing Day, Birmingham City on the 29th December and then host Millwall on New Years Day.

The Easter period will also be busy, Good Friday the 3rd April will see Ipswich Town at St Mary’s and then we travel up to Wrexham on Easter Monday 6th April.

WE end the season on Saturday May 2nd with a trip to Preston North End.

So we now all know what we are doing for the next 11 months, lets hope Will Still and his team do as well.

Funnily enough when the fixtures came out I said to my mate, Wrexham that's not a team it's a TV show! All the sycophants will be out for a smile from Ryan et al. Come on Will lets stuff em!

At least they bought a team to which they had a connection and they were not a PL side.
Although not massively supported allow the few to enjoy their time in the spotlight.
Apart from the games against us I wish them well
Six games we must win/must not lose.Hull,Charlton and of course the blue few from down the road

I agree with Nick, 3rd tier club at best. Hope they go straight down again. I hate Hollywood, full of wronguns. False idols with no soul. Worshipped by muppets. I’d rather the Skates stayed up than them.

I think you are missing the point.
This has nothing to do with the glamour(?) of Wrexham, its all about whether we are a team that will be challenging for promotion come next year; and if we are then we have to immediately play with serious intent from the off.
And they will be thinking similar: if we (Wrexham) really are challengers for a 4th promotion in a row, then the Saints are a team we have to put to the sword.
I am optimistic; but Wrexham will still see us as a team lacking in confidence who are ripe for the plucking; we have to show them we are a lot better than that.

Wrexham and Pompey. Six points down in the first month. We haven't got a team fit for the Championship and it would be delusional to think that we have. Bazunu? For Christ's sake. He was bloody useless two seasons ago and he's a damn' site worse now. The rest of this sorry rabble wouldn't know a goalmouth if you kicked them into one. I wish it were not so but we are closer to relegation fodder than promotion candidates.

I grew up in Shrewsbury - - who really dislike Wrexham - so I'm very keen to see us smash these wannabes. But it is all about the Skates. Only wins will do! Hopefully by then we're flying high confidence wise.

I am full of confidence about the new season and fully expect a promotion challenging or even Championship winning season.

Looking at the teams in the division there are really only two that are worrysome - Ipswich and Leicester. Leicester are in disarray following the late leaving of RVN and Ipswich have lost players and we can beat them. The rest hold no fear, including the Hollywood factor.

It then comes to a few things firstly, how Will Still and his staff motivate, coach and instill tactics into the squad. Secondly, the squad. Its been said we don't need to get rid on anyone, hopefully it will be three in and four/five out. Archer is an ex U21 international so he should be able to score at Championship level given the right supply. Dibling needs a kick ( or ten ) up his a*se to focus properly. ( or Lallana's arm around his shoulders ). Ramsdale needs to stay.

Which leaves the squad factor. They should be motivated to show that they are not as bad as last season made them out to be, they should want to put a wrong right, they should have the desire to 'pay the fans back' for the support that they have given them, Nothing less than 120% every match will do.
