Promoted German Club Interested In Southampton Defender Sunday, 6th Jul 2025 12:47 According to reports in Germany, promoted German giants Hamburg SV are interested in buying Armel Bella-Kotchap, initially the defender looked like a great buy, but injury hit and he has played just once for Saints in the last two years.
football league world.co.uk are quoting German football media as saying that Armel Bella-Kotchap is wanted by Hamburg who have finally got back into the top flight of German football after around half a decade in the Bundesliga 2.
They say that Bella-Kotchap wishes to return to Germany and the Bundesliga.
But the report also states that Hamburg aren’t the only club interested in signing the defender, Werner Bremen & Borussia Monchengladbach are also said to be hovering in the back ground and that will be good news for Saints as it could spark a bidding war.
It is said that Hamburg hope to secure his services for around £8.6 million or €10 million in German money.
It will be a pity to see ABK depart St Mary’s, he has the potential to be the best out of all the current central defenders on the books, for some reason neither Russell Martin, Ivan Juric or Simon Rusk seemed to rate him and he spent most of the season at best warming the bench.
If the £8.6 million is achieved then it will mean that Saints have roughly got their money back and their only real loss will be his wages for the season just gone where we paid him basically to train.

Both ABK and Salisu showed early glimpses of real superstar potential. Sadly neither delivered on that promise for us. In the championship, CB is an area we have well covered. Take the money and move on.

A very pacey player who I thought was destined for the top His shoulder popping out a few times caused him to lose his place in Ralph's team and subsequent coaches haven't rated him Did he fail a medical when he tried to go back to Germany before? That could slow up or prevent any move

Take the money and get another off the books who clearly isn’t going to be part of our future. As you say, for some reason the last 3 or 4 managers have ended up not using him, maybe it’s his attitude? I still can’t work out if Tall Paul has officially gone yet..

As negativly as people see the last 3 managers , they are professional football manahers and for all 3 to take a pass suggests to me that he was no better thn what we had. I wouldnt be at all suprised if like Danso we dont see him back in the Premier League saying that he is more mature and more exprienced either way Saints was too much too soon for him. Will be glad to see us bank some cash a lighten the wage bill to make way for more incomings.

Not a lot to discuss here - is there? How ever good ABK is /was he hasn't had the game time a player seeks and he's hardly likely to get much more under the new management. The fee won't be enormous, but if we recover the cost of the purchase and his salary paid out we will do well, but history says that a cheap fee will also demand an eventual sell-on clause in case he proves to be successful and ends up with Leipzig, or even Bayern.

If it's not his ability that has seen three managers leave him out, then maybe it is aptitude or attitude? Whatever lets get shot and look for other surplus ASAP!
