Atkinson was brought in early on in the 2007-8 season, when we suffered
the worst injury crisis in the club's history. Such was the desperation
of the situation, that he was signed late on the Friday night, making
his debut for the club the next day without having previously met either
his team mates or new manager.
He was certainly a panic signing, as the
returning injured players were given the nod ahead of him. As it
transpired, the central defender made just two appearances for the club,
both coming off the bench.
He was drafted in from Barnsley
where he had come through the ranks playing both in central defence and
at right back, making a limited number of appearances for the Tykes.
As well as featuring for
Barnsley, he had loan spells at Scarborough and Halifax Town. He
spent most of the 2005-6 season with the Seadogs and he scored two goals
in four appearances for the Shaymen during his loan spell.
After leaving Spotland to
return to Barnsley, he was immediately sent back out on loan to Grimsby
where he spent the remainder of the season. He became a first team
regular for them, and played in the JPT Final at Wembley for the
Mariners.
