Suppose it is like anything - always think of all the potential Wimbledon champion who never touched a tennis racquet.

My belief is that you can learn and practice your way to a really high level but there are a few that have that extra magic and probably the majority of them are never even given the chance to know they have that skill.

Tend to agree.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Genetics do give an advantage but it's the hard work that sets the true greats apart.

A lesson for any future pro's in our academy would be to follow Ben Davies's lead. Drive, determination and relentless dedication in abundance. Not an ounce of Berty Big B*llocks in him, and, not surprisingly never saw his parents apart from when they picked him up.

A lesson his rival for the LB slot could probably learn from.

Genetics has nothing to do with it, the idea of 'natural talent' is a myth. What separates us all is the hours of purposeful practice.

I refer you to the book 'Bounce' by Matthew Syed, which focuses on this topic.

I think dedication ala Roy Castle will get you to a good level but there are some things that hard work can not replicate and that is natural talent.

I think footballers that can reach championship level upwards and be consistant would represent the combination of natural talent and hard work ,no matter what we say for those guys to earn a high living at that level would take alot of dedication and skill .

Most of our Swans team over the last few years has come from premier league clubs or ex premier league clubs, the likes of Ash,Taylor,Pratley, monk,Britton,Gower,Butler ,Tate ,Dyer and many more were probably top of the class at age group level and had talent but maybe lacked the chance or dedication at the time . For them to progress through the leagues and reach a high level takes some doing IMO.

I think you need to be gifted to make it to such a high standard but it means nothing without the required hard work.

I think i read somewhere that Gary Neville was not as talented as his brother but his sheer hard work and determination set him apart not just from his Brother but many other players but im guessing that he must have had natural talent to go with it as he was a top full back for many years at the top end of the prem league and in europe.

Just my view of course !

If it were that simple then every sportsman would be just as good as any other. They clearly aren't.

Some people are just better at things than others are.

Because they have spent more time practising, especially during the crucial formative years where skill acquisition and fundamental movement is key.

Tiger Woods - best golfer ever arguably, out practising his swing every day from the age of 4

Andre Agassi, Williams sisters - Parents had them out every day from a young age practising relentlessly.

There are examples in every sport, especially from countries such as Russia and China where they select individuals as young as 3 for specialisation in sports such as gymnastics. They are world champions by the age of 14 and out of the sport by 16.

We are not born with a 'football gene', a 'tennis gene' or even an 'athletic gene'. The closest we come is that there is evidence to suggest that some ethnic groups, such as Jamaicans for example, are born with a greater natural amount of 'fast twitch' fibres than others.

No reference needed (I refer you to my blog on Pep Clotet )

% of fibre types will be one factor that will influence development. But as you say, access purposeful practice is what elevates people to excellence, not pretty drills with cones where the coach is central and no game situations throw themselves up

It's not just about the Tiger Woodses. There are tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of golfers/footballers/whatever out there all practicing as hard as they can. Very few of them will ever reach the elite level of those below Woods, never mind equalling him. That's not simply down to practice. They're just naturally better at it than others.

It's not just sport. In almost any field of human achievement, from art to science to music, some people are just better at certain things than others. Did the Beatles spend more time practicing music or songwriting than the tens of thousands of other bands since them? Or were they just better at it?

Partial nonsense, different people have different strengths and natural ability is a factor.

Other than that, hard work is what separates the elite from the adequate.

This guy's having a f*cking good go...

"It’s a project in transformation. An experiment in potential and possibilities. Through 10,000 hours of “deliberate practice,” Dan, who currently has minimal golf experience, plans on becoming a professional golfer. But the plan isn’t really about golf: through this process, Dan hopes to prove to himself and others that it’s never too late to start a new pursuit in life. For a detailed description of the project, please read this blog post: http://thedanplan.com/blog/?p=1090"

Then we go back to purposeful practice.

When Frank Lampard was a nipper, he starts kicking a ball around in the garden, with his dad, who is a professional footballer, he has no skill, he stumbles all over the place.

There's a boy who lives across the street from Lampard, as a nipper he starts kicking a ball around in the garden, he has exactly the same skill level as Lampard, he's falling over and stumbling all over the place, there is no 'natural' talent to suggest Lampard is any better than the boy across the street.

As time progresses, Lampard continues to kick the ball around with his dad, and lets argue the boy starts kicking the ball around with other boys his age, who are of the same/less ability. Lampard's practice is far more purposeful than his counterpart, his skill acquisition is of a much higher level, he progresses at a much faster rate with a professional footballer to learn from.

Over time, the boys grow identically in weight, and height. Frank Lampard goes onto become a brilliant premier league player, the boy across the street goes on to be a brilliant Championship player. The key difference was the purposeful practice in those crucial years.

Of course, the difference can be in a wide variety of things, such as standard of local clubs/academies etc. not to mention pure luck and opportunity, there are incredibly talented footballers in local leagues around Wales who probably could have made it in the football league or even higher had they had the right opportunity, that's how it goes.

This applies to all sports and skills. You and I can both start to practice playing the guitar tomorrow, if my 10,000 hours (the estimated time to achieve excellence) are more purposeful than yours, I will be the more 'talented' player. Every time.

We are all born with the same talent and level of skill, zilch.

What is this natural ability then?

We are not born with genes or any 'natural' ability that gives us a chance of being a better tennis player, footballer etc. We are all born as babies with no fundamental movement or skill.

If Roger Federer and I are born tomorrow, we have exactly the same skill level. Federer is not a better tennis player than me at that point, are you suggesting at the age of 3 he just grabbed a tennis racket and started hitting forehands like it was his natural instinct?

Sorry, but absolute tripe.

You have to have a natural ability such as balance, speed, spatial awareness, coolness under pressure. You can develop these with hard work but only as far as your natural ability will allow otherwise everybody could be anybody.

The ability to act under pressure us also very important especially in precision sports such as shooting, snooker, darts etc. plenty of top class pub players out there but stick them in a pressure situation such as in front if TV cameras and they melt.

I cannot believe that was a serious post. Born with balance and speed? I've never seen a baby who can hop across the room on one leg.

Why do we bother not being able to walk/move around for 3 years then? to save the surprise?

Mmmmm, ok.

What I should have said, though I am sure others read into it as it was meant, was that some people have an innate ability which can be nurtured better than others.

I really don't believe that this is a debatable topic but there you go.

Ok, let's take Mozart as an example. Scoring music from the age of about 6.

Did his folks sit him down and make him work, work, work so that he could achieve that standard at such an early age. Well although I wasn't actually there I believe they did not.

So what was it? It's this thing called natural ability.

The same could be said for Messi, Federer, Phil Taylor and many others.

Or you could make the same argument for Nobel winners. If I had stuck at it and worked harder could I have achieved one. NO!

Or politicians. Could we all do what..............well maybe that defeats my argument a little so we'll leave that one there.

But seriously, some people have the necessary ability needed to get to the top, others don't. No amount of hard work or dedication will get them there.
