My 80 year old mum had her purse Stolen today in camberley mothercare,£80 plus her cards and un-replaceable photos in it, she's shaken to hell and as the shop didn't gave its cctv on no chance of finding out who took it.

On the other hand, in the 70s and 80s there was almost an entire generation of kids who didn't give a fck about authority or anything they were meant to do. You left school, signed on, found a squat to live in, started a band or joined an agitprop group or did something else you wanted to do, anything but a shit job. It wasn't that safe though. If you walked through an area where your face didn't fit you risked hassle, robbery or worse. If you travelled at night or went to gigs you had to watch out, especially if you were dressed in a way that attracted the attentions of skinheads. If not the skinheads, then some other type of boot boys or random pissed up thugs. If you went to football multiply that by ten - bother was never far away. If you were black, add in continual police harrassment.

Crime stats, including robbery, violence and burglary, are on the decline and have been for a decade or more. Not that stats mean anything when you or someone close to you becomes a victim.
