Corona Virus on 20:44 - Mar 16 with 2481 views | Catullus | I watched a news report (C4) and they were saying Venice has noticed one positive effect of this virus. The water is cleaner because there's no motor boats, cruise liners, tourists polluting the place. Our roads have been noticeably quieter, the aircraft are grounded, this virus is bad for humans but it's giving the planet a break.

Corona Virus on 19:40 - Mar 16 by PozuelosSideys | Im struggling with some of the modelled numbers. So the original scenario 1 predicted 260,000 deaths based on isolation, quarantine and socia distancing, with more aggressive measures cutting the death rate in half. We have a population of C.60m. China has a population of 1.4 billion yet recorded around 3,200 deaths and they think they are over the worst. Im assuming our "more aggressive measures" are similar to what China put in place. Im finding it hard to believe that we have 4% of their population but a potential 8000% actual mortality rate? [Post edited 16 Mar 2020 19:44]

You’re comparing deaths to population. The mortality rate is calculated as deaths to infected, not to population. China’s outbreak was focused in one region so didn’t effect the whole population (another reason why they could lock down easily, as other regions in the country could still support).

Unfortunately, I think there will be a huge economic push after this passes through that will more than compensate, just my feeling.

Im comparing the ratio of basic mortality against population count based on the UK's projected potential scenario of 260,000 deaths based on a link Jasper put up: Its on ere somewhere: https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/swanseacity/forum/255835/page:6/#130 The spread of this is all over China as per this link. It was mainly restricted to Wuhan in the same way you can argue its focused on London in the UK at the moment of lockdown. China has huge swathes of non population geography too unlike the UK, but huuuuuge cities all over the place. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/coronavirus-maps.html#asia Anyway, not really disagreeing as there are a million and one holes you could pick in the basic numbers, but i think the ratio outut of 6m deaths based on the UK scenario will turn out wildly inaccurate. Time will tell.

Let’s all hope that the deaths are far, far lower than they’re planning for. And we look back with bemusement. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. We all have to hope this just disappears as quickly as it arrived.

Use decent cleaning products and keep your house warm.

Or .... don't bring the virus into the house, and leave your heating where it is.

That would be remarkable. 12 hours seems likely (and that is along time for an RNA virus). Some larger DNA viruses can hang around for that length of time
