"A new era of football" as the quote goes, enjoyed some of the televised charity 5 a side matches.
Surely a bit of indoor 5 or 6 a side is on the training regime of every club even 7 a side to make it more congested making it harder to make space so making skills like off the ball movement, one touch football or good first time control a must, skills to move the defenders that fraction to get the decisive shot away, ok there are no side walls on a football pitch but using those wall to change angles of play can get the football brain working quicker and sharper, more focused and intense on the smaller pitch which leads better play being transferred onto the ful size pitch.
Played five a side well into my late 50s did I get done by quicker younger players, yes but also found myself time and space that had them chasing shadows against older more experienced players at times.
Think five a side is also very good at getting the idea of rotation into a players head meaning the Centreforward has to come back and learn the defensive side of the game as a game pivots to find space and even sharpens defenders reactions as they find themselves in front of goals.

Not sure when they finished but in my youth 1970's The Swansea Senior League held 6 aside tournaments in Ashleigh Road. Played on a full size pitch if matches were drawn it then went to a corner count. Happy days

As soon as I saw the words ‘baller’ and ‘influencer’ in the article that was me done. It’s six aside. Everyone who’s kicked a football has played small sided games at some point but I suppose it must be of interest to some otherwise the organisers wouldn’t do it to lose money.
