The Gwent levels 20:38 - Jul 2 with 3035 views | SullutaCreturned | The Senedd wouldn't put a road across it for ecological reasons but it sems they aren't averse to all developments on that land, walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/this-irretrievably-damage-nationally-important-31974084?int_source=nba I understand the need for more renewable energy but we can't keep damaging habitats to get that sustainable electricity.. Who remembers Drakefirds stance at the time? Mr Drakeford's move to scrap the six-lane scheme follows a public inquiry overseen by planning inspector Bill Wadrup, who said the case for the road had been "compelling". Ministers had decided that, with austerity and Brexit in the background, the uncertainty of the financial position of the Welsh Government meant the project was too expensive. But Mark Drakeford said he would not have gone ahead even if it was affordable because of the impact on the Gwent Levels. Mr Cairns said: "It appears that the first minister thinks he knows better than the independent inquiry." These solar farm schemes could cover even more land than the motorway if they are all approved and once one is approved it sets a precedent. So what of the impact on the levels now Mark Drakeford?
The Gwent levels on 14:56 - Jul 20 with 296 views | SullutaCreturned | I had the discussion with Scotia about this, if I remember correctly he said we have to sort out the climate change forst but I said protecting habitat was just as important. Then today I saw this, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c30741j351go So the chase to protect the climate, going electric, it's already destroying habitat, killing off wetlands. We have to approach the whole thing holistically or we will just create even worse problems.
The Gwent levels on 21:58 - Jul 22 with 171 views | felixstowe_jack | Most of the M4 relief road was never planned to go near the Gwent Levels. Most of it was on the edge of Newport with some crossing low value farm land. In fact most of the Gwent levels has been drained to provide low value farm land. Anyone who has ever used the train can see that. The M4 relief road could have been built if money had been set aside to actual retore the Gwent levels by providing large ponds an stopping the draining of the levels.

Teh Gwent levels have been drained since the middle ages, it's that which makes it unique and very sensitive. It's known as the reen system. The M4 releief road should have followed a different route rather than the cheapest option. It could not have been built on the proposed route becasue the Wellbeing Act basically made it illegal - that could have been challenged because the legislation is useless but Labour would have ended up looking stupid. Carwyn Jones original cock up exacerbated by Drakeford.

It is not unique or sensitive most of it has been drained and is now low value farmland which has little value to nature. Most of the major drainage work was carried out in the 19th century not the middle ages. It should be fully restored to a proper wetlands not farm land. As previously the vast majority of the proposed M4 relief road skirted Newport and never went near the levels. Only about 5 acres of the levels were affected by it.

It's the drainage that makes it unique and sensitive. https://www.livinglevels.org.uk/
