Constitutional monarchy 13:24 - Oct 4 with 466 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | I often see comments from people online frustrated with the current and previous shower of idiots in charge suggesting (or demanding) that the king should step in, dissolve the government and call a general election. They are generally idiots completely ignorant of the history and nature of the precarious and complex relationship between the Sovereign, Government and Parliament and don’t realise that is not how things work in reality. It’s a system that has generally served us well over the last few centuries in protecting the country from tyrants and limiting the power of nefarious leaders, even Starmer with his massive majority and lack of tangible opposition has struggled to get many aspects of his programme through or has had to make massive concessions at the last minute due to opposition from his own party. Of course the Monarch does officially have this power but would never in theory use it because of the massive constitutional crisis it would inevitably create. But it does raise an interesting hypothetical and existential question for the country. If things ever did get really bad and we did face a situation where a tyrannical extremist managed to seize power and forced through laws that actively harmed this country and its people would a King or Queen ever be willing to step in and stop it? Would they have that moral fibre and sense of duty to potentially sacrifice their position and put themselves in the firing line or would they just go along with it in the spirit of self preservation? Obviously it’s all hypothetical but I’d like to hear your views on this.

If a tyrant managed to get control though, the King orwhoever is monarch would probably find themselves "guests" of the tyrant wih the threat if their family being executed if they spoke out. On a different note, maybe this country needs an "enlightened dictator" becaue we aren't doing so well with a demicracy.

My mind goes back to Hindenburg, the one man who could have stopped Hitler with the stroke of a pen but dithered allowing himself to be convinced by Von Papen that the chancellor could be kept in check. He died a year later and the rest is history.

Oh I'm anti monarchy. I'd go federal tomorrow if I had the power to make it happen. I'd split England up into regions with the devolved nations also being regions of a federal UK. I'd do away with ALL capital cities and have a regional government dropped slap bang in the middle of every region with there being a UK government slap bang in the middle of the Uk that is it's own little town, a block of flats for regional representatives, a modern government building with Uk armed forces providing security.

I totally agree with the first part cat (Monarchy) and the last part about the UK government. I don't know about ALL Capital cities. Maybe Cardiff I went to one of Tonia Antoniazzi's surgeries earlier this year precisely about where I believe the government (the UK one) should be sited.
Constitutional monarchy on 12:11 - Oct 5 with 280 views | JACKMANANDBOY | I have no idea what a good solution is, as soon as there is a demarcation then the stupid politicians start throwing bricks, even with Labour in Cardiff they can't resist throwing bricks at Labour in Westminster. So part of the solution is less politicians and more accountability.

Pressed send too soon, sorry. At the moment Westminster is costing us the best part of a billion a year just to keep it from falling or burning down (£2 million a day). They've been talking about a complete refurb of the place for a long time now and at some point they'll do it. Last time I saw the cost it was £23 billion. By the time they get around to it the cost, as we know, will have doubled. So that's another £50 billion of our money invested (because that's what it is) in London. I suggested precisely what you said cat. Stick it somewhere in the Midlands and essentially make it a complete one off place of government with accommodation for all the MP's and staff all built on the same site. The £50 billion would pay for the whole thing and the savings over time on running the place would be absolutely enormous. She (Tonia) was negative about it as you'd expect but that doesn't mean anyone who's interested in the idea shouldn't suggest the same thing to their MP. And on an ever so slightly separate note, developing Westminster would add another £2.5 billion to the Welsh fiscal deficit. So that's another £2.5 billion that would not benefit Wales one bit going on to our 'debt', invested in the one place in the whole of the UK that doesn't need it, the already bloated London. If or when it does happen i'd much prefer the huge boost it would bring to go to the Midlands rather than London.
