I keep reading we have a young side but in reality it’s a young squad, not first 11.
It has to be in context with the other sides. And most of the division has gone a lot younger this season.
Only on the first day did we field a team that was the youngest championship average.
Since then, we’re middle of the range.
Yesterday for example;
Nardi - 31
Dunne - 28
Mbengue - 23
Cook - 34
RND - 26
Vale - 22
Madsen - 25
Varane - 24
Saito - 24
Kone - 22
Burrell - 24
Average: 25.7.

Time will tell re Kolli but I would pick several ahead of him even for the bench.
As for Dembele, disappointing indeed and why he has been benched most of the season (when he has been fit which he hasn't been). Dembele is one of our youngest in the squad.
No chance of Poku starting this Saturday. |
Pretty certain Poku will be on the bench on Saturday. He’s had 1 45 mins and a 65 mins. And then full week of training this coming week.
Who would drop from the squad? I would drop Frey and Dembele.

Now it’s true this doesn’t mean playing a entire XI of youngsters, but it’s certainly doesn’t mean buying Haydn and bringing in NRD, playing Frey and leaving young internationals out of the squad altogether, and assuming the gossip is true, telling your most productive young players in terms of goals and assist per game to ‘fvck off out the club, we have Saito now’ in front of a canteen full of people.

I don’t know what’s going on with Kolli. I find it as frustrating as most of you. I’m amazed he didn’t start against Millwall instead of Frey. Frey and Kone just does not work.
That said, I don’t think the structure of the squad is contrary to any of the quotes you have above. We are buying younger players, for the most part. We extended Frey because he was decent last season and we do have a lack of strikers even with Kone and Burrell brought in.
I would have quite liked us to give Esquirdinha a go but it’s a huge risk. If we get relegated because of that, all player values will go down. Ultimately, as club have admitted, it’s a tightrope where you’ve got to buy younger players and develop young players but also keep 1st team results improving. | | | |

Yeah for me Varane’s performances have moved him to number 3 in the list. I’d go Hayden above Field because he holds his position better and we looked solid vs 11 against Swansea in first half. Frey will be on the bench but he shouldn’t be. Neither should Demebele. | | | |

Esquerdinha is getting a lot of first team exposure, he is in the squad travelling with the first team, in & around seasoned professionals, first team meetings, in first team dressing rooms on match days, training with the first team, building relationships with first team players and seeing their ways & preparation for games.......he is learning which is good stuff.
He is not ready, just yet, to play regularly for the first team but he is getting a lot of exposure. Personally, but I am not on the ground, I would keep him on the bench for most games and try to introduce him into games (Saturday would have been ideal instead of Field!!). | | | |

Esquerdinha is getting a lot of first team exposure, he is in the squad travelling with the first team, in & around seasoned professionals, first team meetings, in first team dressing rooms on match days, training with the first team, building relationships with first team players and seeing their ways & preparation for games.......he is learning which is good stuff.

Agree on Kolli. Dembele after a promising pre-season and 1st game of the season has been pretty abysmal. For me when Poku comes in this Saturday, Dembele should be dropped from the squad. |
