TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Yeovil Town
at 20:57 18 Oct 2025

The Yeovil manager commented before the game how we’d become a very good team built over time, today was a perfect example of that. The starting XI only contained two players who weren’t here last season, but the increase in quality in those two positions (keeper and centre forward) allied to players getting better within a well established way of playing has seen us become confidently effective.

The team have looked comfortable throughout the season, as seen when seeing out wins when leading by a goal - nothing much seems to faze them or distract from how they look to control games. Gilmour has mentioned more than once about how when players arrive to add to what we have, it takes time to understand how we play and how he went through that himself. That time has seen us find ways of becoming far more effective whilst retaining the same basic structure and philosophy.

That 16/17 side was as relentlessly efficient for a significant period of time, though it took one injury (Bunney) to disrupt that. Let’s hope we don’t see history repeat itself. Interestingly, NML wasn’t featuring much from the start when we were 4th in the league just after Christmas!

This current team has a calmness, one which has similarities to the one in 09/10 which looked like they knew they’d win games before they started. However, I still want to see how they react to a sticky patch of a few games. At present that’s not a problem, because we just start winning again after each loss.

Another comprehensive victory without, as you say, ever having to step up a gear. If we had to, you get the feeling we would have. Controlled and managed the squad well.

The enforced changes may be unwelcome, wait to see what McNulty says on those, but Hogan and especially Allarakhia made their mark. The latter offers so much more going forward in games like today and was a constant outlet which created space in other areas. Hopefully Berkoe is back soon though for the different challenges away from home may cause.

Bird not in the Salford squad today and they’ve just signed Fabio Borini as another striking option.

Edit: he’s out with an Achilles injury “ likely to keep him out for a significant period of time.”

Has it been confirmed at CAB meetings that those present can release information ahead of the official minutes being published?

If so, does this apply to all involved, not just certain individuals/organisations?

Another good episode. Some fair, reasoned analysis of the last few games.

I’d agree with their manager too. Thought they looked a really well coached team who all knew their roles.

I didn’t go to Forest Green so can only go off the radio commentary there, but would it be fair to say York did similar to what we did last week with respects to controlling the game?

York’s ability to slow the game down to actually stopping with the ball seemed to confuse us (and some fans who called for the keeper to be penalised for standing there with the ball at his feet!). The second half changes then confused them!

Yep, we’ll have a free weekend on the 1st, three days before the home game with Scunthorpe who’ll be playing in the Cup on the Saturday.

On the subject of wingbacks, we just didn’t offer enough to worry York today. Not sure Berkoe is the answer in home games as when he gets pinned back he becomes a left back (have seen some comments about ‘Rochdale’s back five). TS posted earlier about using him away, especially in the games against top sides, but Allarakhia provides more problems for the opposition to think about.

The changes clearly weren’t too little too late as it changed the game in our favour. The subsequent change saw them gain advantage again.

On any ‘play-acting’, we can’t complain after our two previous away games when the keeper has gone down. Something noticed by both sets of home commentary teams.

York did to us today what we did at Carlisle and Forest Green - a professional, deserved win. Right now, on games seen, they’d be our main rivals until the Linney/Conn-clarke show proves to be enough to make up for the obvious deficiencies elsewhere in Carlisl’s side.

Not leaving a man outside the box not only ensures that shot is challenged, but makes the opposition change themselves. Lessons not learnt there.

Strange game. Firstly, York will be a real threat for top spot. Quality players and a system they seem very comfortable with.

We probably got it wrong, then spectacularly right then wrong again. Not sure why we didn’t make a couple more changes from the start and York appeared to be fine with a slow stalemate. The subs after their goal though offered a real glimpse of tactical ability as we went two up front, two behind and only Gilmour in midfield and York were totally baffled. The impetus was lost by then subbing Mani. Keeper error and were then out of the cup.

Oh and those Radio York commentators must have issues watching games with some sort of impartiality. Their side were equally if not more slow than Dale for a lot of the game. Their keeper set records for standing with the ball.

Thought we might get a loan in but that’s a good point about the back line. Still think Moss could step into Gordon’s role if TAR is back and we’d be as defensively sound, though we might miss a bit going forward.

It could be argued that the most competitive ever NL season was the one when Wrexham and Notts County were going point for point almost all season long.

Notts finished second on 107 points having been knocked out in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Wrexham won the league with 111 points. They played seven games in reaching the fourth round proper of the Cup, going out to Sheffield United after a replay. They also required a replay to beat Blyth Spartans in the fourth qualifying round.

Mancini was the one positive to come from Brackley. That and glimpses in the NL cup have shown there’s a player with passing ability others may not have. But we knew when we signed him that injuries would always be the issue.

Those would be my choices at present too, though McBride has always come in and done well. He’s been much more productive results wise as well with respect to goals and assists, still believe there’s more to come from Barlow on that front.

Pettit will count himself unlucky to not have featured more, but East and Gilmour have responded well to (my) doubts about how well they play together.

On the subject of ‘strongest XI’, what are the thoughts as to what that is at present?

—————— Whatmuff ——————
——— Gordon—— EEL—— Beckwith
TAR —————————————— Berkoe/ Allarakhia
————— East ——— Gilmour ———
— Barlow/McBride ——— Rodney —
—————— Dieseruvwe ——————

Seems obvious. Depending on the opposition/form/fitness, the choices at LWB and between Barlow/McBride are ones that could go either way so who would be the ones to get the nod?

The FA Cup has provided some fantastic memories during my time as a Dale fan.

York 1983
Scunthorpe/Man U 85/86
Run to the 5th round at Palace 1990
Replay win against Blackpool 1992
Coventry 2002
Leeds 2014
Forest 2015
Run to the 5th round v Spurs 2018
Newcastle 2020

During some of those seasons we’ve been challenging for promotion/fighting relegation, often successfully. There are arguments which support both playing the strongest team available or utilising the squad, I’d trust the staff at the club to make the right decision based on info they have available. They might get it wrong but either way I really hope we win and go as far in the Cup as possible.

Football is often about moments and memories, just don’t think you can pick and choose with certainty where it’s best they happen.

That’s me told.

Here’s another question then, which season had least draws? Without checking, 89/90 only had six I think. W20, L20 ? Season we got to the 5th round of the FA Cup for the first time and went out to Bolton in the League Cup. So that’s 49 games without a draw.

Don’t be including the Freight Rover or whatever it was called…

Although not a record, there’s a more recent draw-less sequence :16/17 from September to February, with 20 games without a draw.
