Read my original posting. I only mentioned Spurs away. Yes no doubt over the two ties we made a nice profit. No doubt similar with the Newcastle tie. At no time did I denigrate the competition like you suggest.
Denigrate it? From where you coming? Now you have introduced the Dale home tie into the equation. I never mentioned that. I simply stated that I was told that the cost of putting on the Spurs game at Wembley Stadium, security costs etc were greater than the gate receipts.
FA Cup gate receipts are apportioned after the deduction of match costs, with each club receiving 45% of the net receipts and the remaining 10% going to the Football Association (The FA). These expenses can include costs for the pitch protection system and floodlighting, among other items agreed upon in advance by the competing clubs.
The Spurs replay had an attendance of 24627 with tickets at much reduced prices. From what I was told the ticket receipts didn't even cover the cost of hiring Wembley.
Manchester United's 21-year-old English winger Sam Mather might leave for a club in Turkey before their transfer window closes either on loan or permanently. (Manchester Evening News)
The cheapest direct flights I could find for Manchester - Newquay return were flying with Loganair. Out Saturday and return Sunday. Netflights have tickets available at £ 322/person return. Unfortunately the flight doesn't arrive at Newquay until 2-55pm. The option to go via Dublin, using Aer Lingus/Ryanair was £ 223/person. Arrival at Newquay is 12-40. Return flight departs Newquay on Sunday at 16-45 arriving Manchester 20-25.
Ronnie, his son Ian (I think) and Lennie Lawrence were present in the visiting director's box for the final game of last season against their present club, Hartlepool. We had a brief chat and he had no problem recalling the FA Cup tie at Old Trafford. The one were Bryan Robson was recovering from injury and for some strange reason the undersoil heating system failed in one half of the pitch twice causing two postponements. Eventually I think that the game was played on a Thursday night and without Robson. The declared crowd of 28000 was later amended to 40223 when they discovered some more turnstiles. Dale left fullback Dave Grant nearly being decapitated being on the end of a drop kick from Mark Hughes. And I completely forgotten that Gordon Strachan played for Utd that evening.
