Wood and Jelert have to start on Saturday
at 07:35 24 Sep 2025

Will Still made 9 changes from the team on Saturday, to give others a chance to stake a claim for starting. Nearly all of last nights team made a difference and put in a good shift.

It would be really disappointing if Still ignores this and reverts back to the players that have been very average or still playing 'Rusty ball' so far this season. It would also raise the question why so many changes if he has no intention of playing any of those that played well last night, other than to give them a rest ?

The defence looked a lot more solid and organised.

Flyn Downs and Quarashie had strong performances and their best games this season. (longer for Downs)

Quarshie's aerial presence made a difference.

The defence moved the ball a lot quicker from final third, rather than the usual slow lethargic build up. There was a lot less passing backwards. e.g. in Hull game there was 95 back passes compared to 76 last night.

Jelert was more effective than Roerslev and didn't Give the ball away as much as Roerslev has done recently.

We had more shots and corners than Liverpool and hit woodwork.

Despite result, it was a lot more encouraging.

Genuine question, has Damion Downes ever actually been a professional footballer?
at 22:13 23 Sep 2025

I honestly believe Damion Downes is probably the worst striker to put a Saints shirt on, and I include Ali Dia in that. How he is still getting so much game time is also a mystery.

A lot of positives to take from tonight.

Hope Still keeps the same back line. We showed a bit more urgency going forward. I always feel Harwood-Bellis and Stephens are too slow to move the ball forward, allowing teams to get organised and then press hard.

Flynn Downs and Quarshie were very impressive tonight.

I just don't get what Will Still is seeing in D Downs performances ? He offered nothing, and on the few occasion he did get the ball he failed to control it or gave it away.

Ekitiké red card was comedy gold. I thought Stephens hair pulling red card was bad, but Ekitiké took stupidity to a new level.

Made 2 good saves and then returns to type trying to play it out the back with a crazy pass.

How many times have we seen that from McCarthy ?

9 changes & Robinson still benched.
at 19:10 23 Sep 2025

Other than Robinson and perhaps Stewart, I am fine seeing how this bunch get on.

After the Hull game, it needed wholesale changes. I am pleased the defence has been shaken up, with H-B and Stephens not playing.

He is giving the new signings a start, so will be interesting to see how they perform.

Dickie Bird - Sadly passed away today aged 92
at 15:24 23 Sep 2025

What a wonderful character and absolute legend.

He was very vociferous about technology in the game, and famously did his own Jason Puncheon impression, leaving the field during a test match.

He will be missed.

Not good enough
at 15:14 14 Sep 2025

This is a valid point. There was little time to prepare with new players and formation (e.g. back to back 4).

Local Derbies also throw the form book out of the window. Pompey's plan was to hustle, disrupt and throw balls into the box from flanks at earliest opportunity. We didn't help our cause by keep giving ball away with loose passes. The 2nd half was better (just - unless you were watching on same TV as Tony ?), but again we lacked a leader to control the situation after a disastrous start/1st half.

On reflection after a few beers and getting my blood pressure down again, we can move on from this. Fellows looked a threat. Still not sure about Roerslev ?

Not sure what you watched in first half, but that was horrendous.

It will and has to change in 2nd half. Just cutting out the poor passeds and hoofing it aimlessly down flanks will help. Fellows looks as if he could do some harm if he gets some good service.

Just as well they didn't have a third Saints player in the team
at 19:29 9 Sep 2025

Kelleher was in goal, but Manning (subbed 81 min) and Azaz (subbed 70 min) played.

Players out of contract.

Josh Brownhill signing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab, and chose them because he was impressed by their project !

Has anyone ever signed for one of these Saudi clubs and said,' I am only here for the money ? '

The lawyers acting on her purchase of the Hove flat are far from running away. They have come out and said;

1 They don't (and are not qualified) to offer tax or Trust advice
2 The stamp duty was based on the information she provided.

The question is,' what did she disclose to the lawyers or did she get advice from another source ?

Southampton Reported To Have Won The Fight For Brazilian Winger

I am hoping with this Winger signing and Tom Fellows, we can go back to a flat back 4 without the wing backs we were deploying.

S**T - 2-2= Free kick from about 25 yds out.

It was towards top right, but disappointing to be beat from that far out.

I think there was only 3 in wall (need t see again), So if you dont have a full wall, you must be confident of not getting beat from 25 yds. Very poor

Just a new quality striker and if Aribo, Smallbone and Diaz leave, It will have been a reasonable window.

Flags
at 19:31 29 Aug 2025

Apologies if this is already covered.

Who is sponsoring all these flags ? I understand it started in West Midlands. My small village, miles from Birmingham is covered in them ?

They are high up on posts. I can't believe our neighbourhood watch/twitchers didn't spot anyone putting them up.

I am disappointed that he has left. He was the one highlight from the horror show last season.

I can see how he would want to leave, with the World Cup next year, and it doesn't come as a surprise that International managers want their best players in top leagues. However, I can't see how going to West Ham will help.

I think he has conducted himself well during this period, and just got on with playing for the club, unlike Dibling. As for the unauthorised trip to West Ham, it sounds like this was the medical and deal had been (or almost concluded). I didn't read too much into this.

If he wanted to leave, whether for money or international aspirations, and we are offered £40m, then I believe Saints did the right thing.

We move on. With transfer window closing, we can now get some stability around who is in/out, and build team around those left.
