Chorley Game
at 23:32 23 Jul 2025

Up until their goal we couldn’t get out of our own half.

As seen last year, if we are 100% determined to play it out from the back every single goal-kick without exception, the opposition can press high and we get nowhere time and time again.

Red card was extremely marginal, linesman didn’t flag, ref was square on. Was a great save by young Tom. Ref put the mousse line about 1cm from the edge of the box for the free kick.

Absolute kudos to Chorley for allowing him to stay on.

Chorley goal - free header at back post

Second half we were on the front foot a lot more but Chorley had taken players off, so hard to compare.

Main factor i think is where the two teams are at pre-season. This was Chorley’s 6th friendly having had Wigan, Preston and Bradford visit previously. In the first half especially i think this showed.

Wicket for Dawson in his second over.

I really hope he gets a bagful in these two tests, to break the ‘England Circle’ that has players undroppable

Home 1/4 on 6th September.

England play South Africa 3 ODI’s on 2nd, 4th and 7th September.

Salt, Buttler, Livingstone, Wood, Mahmood, Hartley all therefore potential absentees.

As loved around the world as T20 is, the existence of The Hundred in England relegates The Blasts importance to a net session.

There is 0 days international cricket while The Hundred is being played, there is 0 days international cricket in the month of August.

Lancs members were asked to vote on a proposed re-structure of cricket scheduling which will reduce games even more (3 groups of 6 - 10 games in total)

It’s typically English to ignore the worlds most popular format and prioritise the worlds least popular format (for the obvious franchise £££ reasons)

Grimsby friendly
at 19:51 19 Jul 2025

Views on the newbies.

First half.

Very even between the two teams, Grimsby started the stronger but Dale grew as half went on.

New keeper in net, aside from a mis-placed clearance did all the goalkeeper tick boxes well. Fast off his line to smother the ball. Came for corners. Saved a 1v1 (offside flag went up) Good with feet (right footed)

Pritchard at LWB. Solid as, defensively. Corner and free-kick duties. Not on first view a flying Taryn type WB.

Trialist A RAM. Notably good at finding space between lines and defenders. Keeper spotted this as half wore on and played through to him. Offensively no major points to mention

Mani at CF. Scored a good header from Tobi cross. Wrestled with defenders a few times. Held ball up well, tracked back defensively a couple of times when needed.

Second Half

Hendo on after 45, everybody else swapped at 60. Grimbsy made 3 subs after 60 then a couple later on. In the first 15 minutes of this half Grimsby on top, lots of last ditch blocks and bodies on the line moments.

Traillist B Keeper. Saved a point blank shot direct at him. Good distribution, non better than his assist - great kick to Rodney who firstly out positioned the defender, then secondly out-muscled him to get clear and score across their keeper.

Triallist C (28) LCH. Nothing of note to mention which, in this position is a good thing. Did defensive duties well. Was up against a lesser threat after Grimsby subs so hard to rate.

Triallist D (29) RWB. Very attack minded. Driving in on his left foot, beating men a couple of times. Looked hungry for the ball. Linked up well with….

Humble RAM. Actually started in CM when first came on but quickly swapped with Corey Edwards to this poisition. Good touch and good passing on first view.

Moss LCB: Same as Triallist C - hard to rate as Dale were on top following the subs so no major Grimsby threat.

Petit CM. Played mostly a defensive role giving Edwards a more forward CM role. Solid 30 mins nothing of major note jumping out.

The game itself was competitive with a few tasty tackles going in here and there. No major shift in formation or approach to games.

Edwards had a Cole Palmer moment in the second half where he found himself in space, sent an approaching defender completely, shifted to the edge of the box and calmly slotted….ok, the last bit didn’t happen, he went for power and the ball went high, wide and not very handsome.

Rodney and Taryn linked well on the left, keeping these two fit for the whole season would be a major plus for the team.

Dale confirmed entrants
Burnley, Blackburn, Everton and Man U
Free entry to all games
Club looking into possibly scheduling games during daytime during school hols.

Given that we have a large squad (24?) it will give run out opportunities and for me, free entry is a fantastic idea.

Dawson added to squad for OT and likely to play last 2 tests.

If he has 2 good games then more pressure on Bashir’s position but as with Crawley/Pope the management are ultra-loyal.

Atkinson back playing club cricket last weekend bowled 8 overs so building up. Woakes obv player at risk.

Can’t see ‘son of’ Crawley and vice-Captain Pope being removed, i think the former would have to do unmentionable things to get ousted from his spot. All eyes on Australia for him.

How good was Palmer first half? Such a talent.

As much as i am not a fan of Cucurella personality, the hair pulling is bang out of order and glad to see the red card given.

The bowling tonight was shocking.
The bowling on Weds was shocking.

Hartley should not have been bowled ahead of Green or Wells. No variation and Bairstow took him to pieces.

Wood however is my biggest gripe. When he bowls full he is a nightmare for batters
When he bowls short in the power play the slightest top edge, flick, anything goes for boundaries.
It’s been the same all season, he is the epitome of a fast bowler who won’t learn.

Salt dropped Bairstow dolly catch
Wood dropped Luxton dolly catch
Wood dropped Bairstow - tough catch

With ‘come and hit me’ bowling and awful fielding, it was only a triple wicket final over from Green to keep it below 250.

Buttler showed glimpses of getting into knick tonight but still his timinglooks off
Salt looks in decent knick even though didn’t score big tonight

Desperately miss Livingstone.

With Jaspit asked to bowl a single over just before lunch/tea - i see minimal protection of him by Gill to date. Hope to see him at OT.

Which was why i was so peeved with Smith yesterday.

Krisna had nothing. He was bowling his last over of short stuff before new ball and had 4 men on the boundary. We (England) have been here before. We have failed here before. We have supposedly learnt from before.

But he went and did it anyway and we end up behind on first innings. I’m sure the quickies would have preferred a first innings lead, shorter spell last night and hard ball this morning.

I don’t think i will ever be 100% Bazball to be honest, oldgititis.

4 men out for the hook.

Idiot. That’s not aggressive cricket, it’s just dumb. 79.3 overs gone, 122 behind.
