Wealdstone win is the first real points shift from last season of the 4 teams we have played who were in the national league last season Altrincham +0 Gateshead +0 Sutton +0 Wealdstone +3 Total points from the 6 teams that left - 12 points - 12 games Current points from the 6 teams that have joined - 3 points - 2 games Early to predict but i can't see such a spread across the top last season (1st 102 points 4th 74points) this time round with lots of ups and downs for all teams interested at the top end. That last game v York still stands out as "could be fun" |

One last thought. 8 second rule - when defending a 1-0 win. Couple of times towards the end when Whatmuff claimed the ball. Dale were in last season mode, slowly making their way out from defence which resulted in kicks straight back to the oppo. This new rule is really effective in that stage of the game. Like it myself. |

After ‘can we play you every week’ v Gateshead, it’s ‘thanks we’re not playing you til Easter’ for Sutton. I can see how they drew v York and can see if they adopt that style they may take points from other more fancied teams too. Firstly they set out to stop us playing. Afore-mentioned man-marking (literally) of Barlow, tight marshalling of Mani by their big lad. Secondly, they used their strengths to the fore. Obviously they had the long throw in, but it was what happened after it was cleared (invariably by Mani) - they flooded the back post of whichever side the ball wasn’t on and it was pumped back into their time and again. They adopted the PSG kick-off strategy at start of the second half and got an early corner from it. Second effort after the goal was more Jonny Vegas than Jonny Wilkinson in execution. They never stopped attacking at 1-0 and it’s to great credit that our defence stood firm. Horrible team to play against and full credit to them for getting that label from me. The goal was similar to the first of the season opener at Borehamwood. Mcbride into on-rushing Gilmour, cut-back from by-line, Mani with sharp finish. As always hope knocks are just that and quickly recovered. Great 3 points all said and done. [Post edited 25 Aug 23:01]

Sutton put Dacre on man marker duty first half, constantly grabbing him whenever he made a run off the ball. Obviously singled him out as a danger. Half-time - with Barlow off, Dacre was substituted. Second half saw tactic learnt from past by BJ. With Pritchard off, Tobi initially swapped with Taryn as they attacked constantly down our left Then Moss brought on, Tobi back to normal and Taryn pushed further forward. |

‘Should have won the game’ is completely irrelevant when we ‘actually lost the game’ after 11 changes. Agree on the Spennymoor game, poor decisions by offence and great defending by Spennymoor defence kept it at 2-1 and gave opportunity to Spennymoor. Southend un-doing was moving Tobi from LWB, putting Beckwith at LWB, putting Hogan at LCB and Mitchell as ghost striker for the last 30 minutes. |

That’s a great example of how memories of people are made in football. Mention Andy Thackaray and first thought is of the Carlisle game i would suspect for most. It can be unfair (Thacks was a great player) or positive e.g. Ben Muirhead Steve Davies BJ has created one of those moments himself. Whether it will will be how he is rembered in 20 years, only time will tell. This moment can be superceded. For example, primary memory of Keith Hill is not of him playing two strikers as left and right back leading to a drubbing. [Post edited 24 Aug 9:17]

Big Jim’s choice to change 11 players today. Result. We lost the game. Positives. No injuries Whole squad aside from Humbles have all have competitive time on the pitch Manager better equipt to appraise squad players as above Negatives We lost. (You could argue we could have lost anyway) Relevance If we win the league - it was a genius move If we win the playoffs - it was a genius move If we finish 2nd by 2 points - it was an awful move If we finish 4th or8th by 2 points - awful move If the national league take note and re-assess the scheduling at this time of year - genius move. If we don’t win on Monday it could be argued that momentum has been affected Fans will accept being beaten by others, but will not accept being beaten by themselves. |

I feel that this is a indirect protest to the 3 games in 5 days. That is not an insult to any player selected, more from comments last year and this obvious selection. |

East my man of the match tonight, but agree it could have gone to many a player. No threat in defence, plenty to show in attack. Half-time was a bit disappointed it wasn’t more, as cross after cross went straight to their keeper. Second half was just a case of when, rather than if the 3rd would come. Echo the comment above, where Gateshead were 2 years ago when we couldn’t get a touch of the ball. Very different team tonight. Great for McBride after a long injury to smack the last one in. |

First of 3 games in 5 days so expecting squad usage a lot more over these 3 games. East was feeling his calves on Sat towards the end Beckwith was feeling his calves likewise Taryn we know needs game time managing carefully to help him be in tip top form when playing. Add in the memories of last season where Eels got injured and BJ and other managers had a rant about the schedule at this time. Above 3 might go out for Pritchard, Petit and Tutonda i suspect tonight. |

I suspect Morecambe fans at present will simply be glad that the club exists (for now) Manager selection seems similar to process of Indian Cricket Team, where who you know is a very high charictaristic required above, erm, everything else really. Oh well, at least we have Boxing Day fish and chips back on the menu. Good luck Morecambe fans as always. |

In the latest twist, Mr H’s request for number 47 has been rejected by the National League, so he is now number 27. |

Congrats TS You got it spot on, under the rule that the season is decided after the first game. |
