Worst places you have visited for an AWAY day fixture !!
at 16:00 29 Oct 2025

Grimsby Town pretty bad- watching trawlers sinking out at sea from the Findus Stand. Luton - needless to expand too much as the whole experience from leaving the train to making an escape is and was horrible. Port Vale, although found a definite Camra "Interior of historic value" with decent beer but pinnacle of awfulness goes to Cambridge United -manyone brave enough to survive the stench of the bogs deserves their PhD. Gillingham is pretty bad - Home Fans' boozer - The Livingstone is genuinely a relic of a much darker age and even the Gurkhas, when they were in The Black Lion Barracks, avoided going anywhere in Gillingham unless in a pack.

Entirely agree -Ref realised that a second yellow for the defender had to be a red so chickened out. It was a foul but the only way he could evade scrutiny for the missed red card was to act out the pretence that he didn't see the original foul...not my fault gov!

Agree - Greene King is the sort of brewery no-one welcomes taking over your pub. They can make half-decent beer but finding it is only to be achieved in parts of East Anglia ... and that rarely. A pint of IPA in "The Champion of the Thames" in Cambridge (behind Sydney Sussex} is generally excellent but it's a little far after a last pint at 2.20 on a Saturday to reach HQ in time for kick-off. Otherwise I tend to avoid Greene King. I think "The Richmond" which I used for years, has been taken over by them and despite the landlady's support for the Rs, the beer is a non-starter.

RIP Gordon Jago
at 14:35 6 Jul 2025

A great and humble manager who instigated Rangers' development from average to exceptional (and no I'm not denigrating Alec Stock). The football we played under him, his signings and the whole philosophy of fluid, structured football is a legacy which endures. We have had, and are having, slumps as at present but he created an expectation of attractive football in our fans. This has been a burden for some subsequent bosses but it lives in the hearts of the "Rs". Rest in Peace Gordon.

London / Cockney slang

In Brighton Rock, Ida is consistently a "buer". This is down to the misogynistic attutude of Pinkie and his cronies. Rose, innocent and implicated is only a "buer" until she becomes Pinkie's property. In the original film, Ida's status as "loose" is confirmed by her singing and dancing as a showgirl thus assuredly a prostitute.

Travel advice
at 16:34 25 Mar 2025

I hope you enjoy Cracow. It is a stunning place. About ten years since I last was there but be prepared for moral and physical exhaustion at Auschwitz. The guides there are brilliant but some of the experience is chilling. Plenty of good bars and places to eat and the Poles have really expanded their repertoire of beer- not just home produced but imported from Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium and Germany - although I think you can get some pretty ropey English beer in "The John Bull" if you're not careful. There are so many places to visit - The Market Square and The Church of St Mary, The Cloth Hall , The Collegium (old part of university)- umpteen other churches - of St Anne and of St John, The Barbican, Kasimierz (I think) and the Jewish Quarter. The Dominican Church. Best advice - as suggested, hit Google and browse what you think you'd like. There's always "The Hard Rock" by St Mary's at about 1/3 of what we pay in London. Good luck - when I was there I couldn't find a QPR pub but times may have moved on!

St Vincents off Marylebone High Street, then family moved and we relocated to Wandsworth. Being from a family of hardline kneebenders, I moved to Holy Cross in Ashington Road. Secondary was Cardinal Vaughan in Addison Road. Then off to universities and the great wide world outside of the Bush. I occasionally say hello to another exile from Cardinal Vaughan... one Kevin Gallen ...as he lives near where I do in St Albans.

Mousehole AFC
at 17:05 28 Oct 2024

Love visiting Mousehole. My missus derives from Penzance and we get down there a couple of times every year. The walk from Penzance through Newlyn to Mousehole is stunning but not really tiring. On that stroll you pass the closed lifeboat station and the tribute to the crew of the Mousehole lifeboat lost with all its crew. I always just fill up just looking at it still after years making this little trip. The football team are evident in local activities along with the Male Voice Choir and the Penzance and Newlyn rugby club - the Mennaye Ground is another great venue. Penzance is a brilliant town _ a working place unlike the holiday and exclusive atmosphere of St Ives or Padstow but it is scenic, with decent pubs and places to eat. I can recommend the Cornish coaster between Penzance and St Ives - open top in the Summer months but a fabulous way to see the coastal villages. Will be back down in late November...cunningly having plotted it to miss any of our home games.

Bird Advice
at 11:11 3 Sep 2024

A jay (basically the same bird) was injured in our garden. HIs/her injuries sound very similar to your magpie. Neither my wife nor I had much of a clue but we rang local pet shop who accepted the bird. A sanctuary would be best but the pet shop staff said that there is an organization who care for injured wild birds and they would collect our jay

Or we could decamp to the Mennaye Field with lots of space to develop a huge ground and share with the Pirates as they overtake Exeter. Penzance needs a big club (even us!).

Are you accusing Harris of being an incompetent mendacious opportunist? If so, then surely she would be a better running mate for Strumpet than Vance who is merely, singularly, an incompetent mendacious psychopath? Just saying!

Utter and complete tory conspiracy b...s. Take your thrashing like a man. JRM and Boris would be ashamed of such a display of whining. Think up some other nonsense and apply for Rishi's job. He has just resigned and the party needs to reestablish its Monster Raving Loony credentials. You sound like you are just the man!

100% St Albans City - just down the road, decent level of football as well as being surrounded by a great range of boozers. Best EVER chant - home to York -(Because the cultured and religious City fans cherish their cathedral) "You've only got a minster". There's class for you!

Baggies Or Not Baggies... QPR Vs WBA Match Thread
at 15:21 3 Mar 2024

No former WBA player scored for us in 1967... therefore Sam does not need to score, although it would be nice! I'd go for a pint in the Lazarus' former pub in Fulham palace Road to guarantee victory but I'm pretty sure it's gone - or at least changed character so it's The Uxbridge as usual.

Sky ( the entertainment at Preston)
at 19:47 4 Dec 2023

I think the issue of Dykes "sending off" which was more than a little hysterical. No complaints about a female commentator, but just as with referees, linos, managers, directors, owners , players and supporters, they must be competent and objective to validate their view,. The commentary team on Friday was neither of these. The grudging faint praise for QPR once they had seen off Preston's early enthusiasm (no more because they did nothing with their initial possession and territory), for the second quarter of the match and then clearly dominant in the second half , was phrased in a deafening non-comment and reluctant concession of defensive determination. Bias in a national broadcaster, when it achieves the heights of pro-Preston desperation as of Friday, needs to be curtailed. I am sure the team from Friday - summarisers and commentators- have better days ahead of them - just preferably not dealing with a QPR match.
