Feel quite sad for Smyth too. Hardworking player who clearly loved the club. I wonder if the abuse from some quarters turned him off... |

Agree with this. I assume this didn't come with a loan fee (or much of one) nor demands on playing time, and this allows us to keep developing Esquerdinha. Sensible (if unexciting) move imo |

Accidental down vote, sorry. If that bid is £5m then I have to say that I don't understand this one... If it's £2mish + addons then I feel much more positive. |

Exactly what I was going to say. With Larkeche out for the season we clearly need a LB (at least on loan), and while Edwards can play as a holding midfielder we really need a box-to-box guy. I see those as priorities ahead of strengthening the CB position, though I see the need to be replacing Cook. |

I just don't see them selling him for this. They bought him for €2m-odd Euros a couple of years back in the first place so I would imagine are looking for a return on that investment. With a couple of clubs in for him I don't see it happening - happy to be proven wrong though. I imagine Thomas is much cheaper and that's why we're in for him |

Not sure what we'd be paying but Transfermarkt reckons 175k (not exactly a great source but I can't even find out how tall he is). That's a lot less than £5m, though I have to say that it's unfortunate that we spent all season getting him acclimatised to Champ football only for him to use that for Derby... |

Don't think the club want to spend that much though. Nourry was pretty emphatic at the forum that they wouldn't be spending it all. Also we need a LB and a CM before another CB, surely. As much as I loved Handsome Ronnie idk if that fixes our problems... |

I guess they wanted more than we were willing to pay. Still don't understand the logic of this with Smyth and Kolli on the bench. Surely we need a LB, CB or CM? |

I would love to have him back but I don't see Saints letting him go for less than our budget. It'd probably cost all of our Eze money in one hit. |

Agreed. I'm not sold on Nourry but I like some of the moves he's made, yet on this forum I find myself trying to be more positive because the tone can be so negative. I really like Clive's columns because I feel like they strike a good balance between asking questions and supporting the good stuff (it's what brought me here) but the forum can be so damn negative sometimes. |

I think it's definitely wages that'll be the issue. If he's willing to take 7-10k a week to play with us then that's alright, but we don't want to be handing out 15k+ a week to players with no resale value. In other words, love to have him back at the right price for the club. |

A couple of people in the thread have talked about "does Kone want to win with us or go to the PL?" and "we're still 16th"; I think we're missing the forest for the trees a little. While we want to be going up the table (and god I hope we're higher than 16th this season) I think it's likely that the lads coming in now (Poku, Kone etc.) are not joining on the basis that they'll be with us in the Prem. In likelihood the plan is to be able to sell these players on next season or the season after for big fees that we can reinvest into creating a squad that can go up and stay up. I would guess this is why Nourry didn't immediately expect prem football in 5 years during the Fan's Forum, though obviously that's where we want to be. Basically I don't imagine that Kone and Poku signed on the basis that we're likely to be promoted... |
 | Forum Thread | How much for Saito? at 09:54 15 Aug 2025
How much would you be willing to pay for Saito? With a 5m asking price from Lommell and the vultures circling (Birmingham), what do you think is a fair price? For me, I'm dropping no more than 1.5m with some addons (maybe up to 3m?). I love him and we spent last season getting him used to Champ football, but it's not a position of need for us, he's pretty small which potentially limits his resale value, and so I doubt we'd easily make much more than that back any time soon (even with his high upside). |

Same, but I don't think it's wrong to make the occasional pragmatic signing if the fee is low enough (free is perfect) and the wages are low enough too. Hayden will add an experienced head in the dressing room. If we get an Eze sale then we might be able to shop around for more young midfielders but I'm not sure we'll be able to get a box-to-box midfielder (especially not a one with some sort of problem) on our current budget. Fantastic! Guess we'll see if it's Morgan or Adamson to start against Watford. |

Not a splurge because I think he's worth it (based on what we know so far) but it was still a lot against our very limited FFP headroom (with the addons). |

It said on Max Lowe's Wikipedia that he put in his notice, so if he becomes a free agent I'd love for us to have a look at him. Obvs my twitter-using mate reckoned we were linked with him back when he put the notice in, so I hope there's some truth in that, though it could be that we're looking at Norrington-Davies because we've already been outbid for Lowe's services...
