Julien Stéphan talks dreams, transfers, and that Coventry game – Interview

Just want to echo others in saying a great interview, cheers Clive. Stephan comes across well - clearly has his own opinions and doesn't bullsh*t.

I think I'd echo this. I like some of what Nourry has done but I don't love his communication style and share some of the worries of people on this board that he may be in over his head.

However, I do find the negativity a little bit exhausting, and find myself defending him some in order to try and bring some positivity. I even feel a bit nervous doing that given that I'm a fairly new poster (long-time lurker) and so open to being accused of being a Nourry sock-puppet or something.

Loved the pod, wish it was possible to have them more often! Thought it was a civil debate and a good overall discussion.

Is that a hat-trick for Celar? I hope so. More goals = more likely for them to buy him at the end.

I imagine the club is already thinking about player sales next season. The obvious one is Varane, with eyes I imagine on Kone, Saito and Dembele as well, perhaps Morrison. I don't imagine we'd sell all of them, but I'm sure one or more will go.

There's also rumour going round that FFP will be replaced at the end of the season with the rules from League 1 or the Prem, so that might also be a consideration.

I think Paal (who was... fine) was the best of a horrible recruitment, and he was famously the one that was most egregiously scammed by Beale.

I'd be frustrated if I was either Nardi or Walsh - Walsh because he's apparently been promised the season and the club is looking at replacing him after 3 games, or Nardi because he had a good season last season and yet has been demoted and is now being replaced.

In both cases, being replaced with a 3rd-string from elsewhere who played for us years back must sting even more.

We're also going to need more than two CB's given our injury record. I don't see Morrison or JCS doing a full season.

Cracking report, Clive. Pretty excited about the green shoots, but nervous as always with anything QPR...

It feels like we might be done, though. Edwards doesn't appear to be happening and we haven't been linked with anyone else, at least not for the first team.

Norrington-Davis thoughts?

Solid and reliable looking player, stepped in pretty quickly and did a job. Unlucky not to score at the end of the first half, too.

Harsh on Michi but otherwise absolutely bang on.

Been thinking about this too. I was pretty skeptical of the Saito signing because it seemed to be buying a player in a position where we had plenty of options, but sometimes I wonder if we can all over think it (or at least me)?

Perhaps we sometimes think too much about tactics and needs etc. when maybe we should just think "this lad is a good player who will make the team better, get him in"?

I like the talk of adaptation - with a squad with our limitations, we will need to be able to play in different styles at different moments, going direct when it works or playing through when it isn't.

I also liked the subs today, and thought they came on at basically the perfect moments (though I might have brought Hayden on for our tiring midfield a touch earlier). I was a huge fan of Cifuentes and absolutely seething when *all that* went down at the end of last season, but one weakness I felt he had was to be a little slow to bring on subs: Stephan is much more ready to bring on subs and much earlier.

Overall I think he did what he had to today after the abysmal performance last week.

CONTRARY to FIRM BELIEF
at 21:30 30 Aug 2025

I've been more positive on Madsen than most but I still wouldn't call it 'uneducated' to be critical of him. I think he's come back much improved from the summer, but still needs to bring the physicality (and mobility, even more, which I think comes from a lack of match fitness) up another few notches to really shine. He can clearly pick a pass though - his ball to Smyth today was a thing of beauty and probably deserved a goal.

There's a player in there that is just starting to peek out. I hope he continues to develop because then we might really have a player on our hands... If not, though, hopefully he shows enough to command a decent fee.

Kone v Kelman

On the transfer fees I think we basically got Kone AND Burrell for the cost of a Kelman.

On today's evidence there's no contest.

Kone MOM?

Kone and Burrell could be a real 'thunder and lightning' combo. Kone bullies centre backs for 60 minutes and then Burrell runs at the remaining bloody stumps.

Pulling them on together today felt like a brave (but ultimately very smart) move from Stephan. I actually really liked that - after the obliteration we received last week, I think many managers would've seen us concede and decided that taking a point was a reasonable option. Instead, Stephan decided to go for the win, and brought on attacking options that were giving Charlton fits.

After last week I was nervous that the players and fans might have given up in Stephan already, but he's earned some kudos from me for that today.

Absolutely buzzing after that. Was it the perfect performance? No. But we showed battle and some mental and physical strength to go and get a win today.

Also excellent performances from the new boys, really looked a lot better today. Would like to see Smyth get a long-term deal given that he really brings something as a squad player. Not every player needs to be a development job.

And Saito's goal? That kind of sexy filth shouldn't be allowed on television before the watershed...
