Who will spearhead our attack on Saturday Aug 9 ?

1) I would assume it's the physicality. He's older and yet he still plays like an old-school bruiser of a CF so I imagine that takes it out of him. Still, you'd hope for more.

2) In the games he was fit for, he was a real presence that we've otherwise lacked up front. I doubt there was a queue of suitors so I imagine he's on a decently club-friendly deal, too. In a perfect world he'd be a number 2 or 3 who would split time behind a couple of other forwards IMO, but we've had horrendous depth up front for years now. I'm not sad about the extension but we're going to have to expect that we'll only get 20 games a season out of him, which is why we need at least one more striker signing and more if Celar is going (as per the rumours)

Frey is a limited player but last year it was so evident when he wasn't up front. I think we definitely need another player like him who can fight and hold the ball up.

I like the Burrell signing for his pace and pressing ability off the ball, but I don't imagine he'll be a number 9 for us, and I'm unsure about Ba in that role either. Nkada looked like an (expensive) option or we were linked with that Tovide kid too... I guess we'll see.

Agreed on all fronts.

It's been interesting watching Wrexham and Ipswich drop multiple millions on players with effectively no resale where we're having to make every signing on the basis that they may have future resale. It's going to be a bit of a bonkers division on that basis, and I'm nervous that we'll struggle in the here and now (however much I agree with the strategy).

Same with loans - I understand that we don't want to be developing other people's players but it's hard not to look at the squad and think we might be quite thin in spots...

Surely it's Burrell this Saturday at least. Frey would be the likely option but since he's been unfit and missed all of preseason... I hope we have Ba / An Other through the door by then too.

If Celar is staying then it wouldn't surprise me to see him, unfortunately...

100%. I'm less down on Larkeche than some, though I'm not sure he's fully ready. I imagine the club will evaluate him until the end of August and then get in a loan if it's not working though I feel that it's pretty similar to the Nardi / Walsh situation. At some point it is put up or shut up time for these players, and if we want to develop players then we may have to endure their growing pains a little. Larkeche has had a good loan at Dundee, at some point he needs game time in the first team. Same with Walsh, or they'll never become starters or (more crudely) sellable assets.

My fear is honestly behind him - Esquerdinha seems good but the tweeting about going home seems a little suspect. Tough for a youngster to go halfway across the world but if our 'depth' is a kid whose heart isn't in it then that gives me a lot of nerves.
