New TV deal = player values & salaries increases = back to square one Club builds new stadium = increased match day & non match day revenue = player salaries increases = back to square one Clubs signs new lucrative sponsorship deal = player salaries increases = back to square one Clubs sign new lucrative kit deal = player salaries increases = back to square one And so on. Clubs basically stand still while salaries go through the (leaking) roof and if any of those maxed out/peaked commercial opportunities lessen, then they are in a deficit straight away. Something has got to be done about player salaries. They, IMO, are the biggest thing killing the game. Stadiums falling apart, regular staff getting laid off, contractors not paid, etc etc just so the club can go and sign some cnt on stupid money who probably then phones it in the moment the ink is dry. Yes, there are dodgy owners but there are good owners too who just can't cope under the pressure of player (agent) wage demands. As much as i love football, no one 'deserves' £10,000 a week (ave. Championship salary) for kicking a football around. Don't give me this "it's a short career' bollox either. Injuries are part and parcel of any sport. My missus (ex Int'l gymnast) retired at just 17 after she had a double-fracture in her arm. 12+ years down the drain. |

Tainted Love... one of the best covers ever IMO. Almost better than the original! The way they slowed the tempo down added to Marc's voice plus the way it seamlessly blends into 'Where did our love go' is just a complete perfect match. [Post edited 24 Oct 9:27]

This is why there is such a huge difference between going to a game and watching it on TV, online etc. I think it's great that people can watch games from afar (or next door to the ground if you like!) but when I've come back from the odd game myself I find the match thread and post match comments from people who not been to the game itself quite depressing. It really is often a polar experience than what you see, hear, feel at the game. |

In an interview many years ago Marc Almond stated that he disliked being pigeon-holed as "a 'gay' artist" as it marginalised his music to a narrow demographic and implied it may not be of interest to anyone who wasn't gay, when he wanted everyone to enjoy his music regardless of anything they may be. Great band and RIP Dave Ball. |

"The days of making money on releasing a record just don’t exist now" Record companies still make money and pay royalties to the artist. Maybe the Label makes more than the artists (depends on the contract) but money is made somewhere along the line. Unless there's some kind of deal record companies don't benefit, other than record sales, direct from a band's tour as any ticket sales, merchandise etc is between the artist, management, tour promoter, merchandiser etc. so I guess a Label will hope for a successful tour to fuel record sales. |

"....but the big conglomerates that own most of the bars you eat will take the piss where they can." Unfortunately the same for any business. If there's a short-term spike in price (for whatever reason) when that spike comes down again they'll still hold their existing price because that's what people got used to paying and therefore increase profit. |

I think we brought the abuse on ourselves by being so high profile. Firstly having the likes of Briatore & Ecclestone on board was always going to bring attention. Then TF all over social media etc whereas, IIRC, Bournemouth just quietly got on with it. |

Yes, they broke all the rules, got fined and were annoyingly continually called 'plucky Bournemouth' despite being anything but. However, they rode the wave and here they are now. We broke all the rules, got fined and didn't ride the wave and crashed back down. Technically, we were just as bad as them. |

There's so much money coming in from TV money that stadium capacity has less of an income impact than it did 30-40+ years ago. By the time you take out match day costs, how much do they make? But yes, having a canny manager and player recruitment helps. Let's face it, with the money on offer to play in the PL I don't think anyone gives a schit if they are playing for Bournemouth if they are getting £70,000+ a week. |

Italy were indeed better than people give them credit for. Yes, it was an ageing team but they had experienced players like Chiellini who knew how to out-think younger players plus you don't go on something like a 30+ unbeaten run if you're not good. We did have them on the ropes in the first half and that's where we needed to win the game. No point holding a 1-0 lead for 87 mins, not in a final, as that is being far too complacent to the opposition. We needed that second goal before half time because no way would Mancini allow his team to be like that in the second half. He didn't and they weren't. I felt going in at half time 1-0 up was not enough. Was England not getting a second goal down to the manager/coaches or down to the players or maybe Italy just did what they had to do in order to not conceded further before half-time? However..... as the OP is about the Golden generation (sic), I'd take where Southgate got us all day long compared to the drudge I had to deal with through the 80-s, 90's (Italia 90 Euro 96 aside) and early 00's. My missus was an international level gymnast. Consumed her life from around 4 years old up until a fall at around 17 years old during a training session caused a double-fracture in her right arm. Out for 18 months and by the time she was both physically fit and 'match' fit, it was over. Luckily she was young enough to be able to go down a different career path but it must be so difficult for anyone that has had it consume their whole life then one day (injury, just too 'old' in sports terms, etc) it's gone. RIP Ricky. [Post edited 17 Oct 14:29]

Well, it was one over zealous steward outside the ground which the club can’t really be blamed for. Football is rival, bar one or two, there’s probably no club I would wish this on as without it there’s nothing. |

I'm trying hard to not go off-topic but this whole subscription model is getting out of hand. A really simple basic game app for my kids and it's "£29.99 per year".... 'per year'?? WTF??? 5 years ago that would have been a one-off payment of £9.99. The justification is to 'enable the company to keep the app updated et etc" - yeah, right, 'cos noughts & crosses needs fkin' updates! Or how about letting me choose? I might not want the game/app perpetually. By the time it needs updates I might have been happy to stop using it and move onto something else. I only have Apple Music on subscription because it comes free from my company, otherwise I wouldn't bother. In fact, I didn't until the free subscription kicked in. Still got loads of CD's (had over 4,000 at one point) and a lot of them I (legitimately) ripped onto a hard drive so I could clear up boxes and boxes of space in the loft. Got a nice clutch of CD's in the car which I'm happy to rotate. |

Word on the street is that da kidz (16 and under) are getting into CD’s as they are retro, therefore trendy. Most grew up in a solely digital world so it’s a whole new experience for them. Good for me, keeps me in a job and hopefully long enough until I retire. [Post edited 13 Oct 19:43]

I too think they were over-hyped simply because they didn't deliver, regardless of obvious ability, nowhere near as much as Southgate's team did (whether you like him or not, his teams got us further). Club rivalry caused a division that split the team apart. There was no team cohesion like there has been the last few tournaments. In Germany in 2006 with the hosts very much in transition, we beat Paraguay 1-0 from a 4th minute OG, two late goals to see off Trinidad & Tobago, then drew 2-2 with Sweden. 1-0 win over Equador in the round of 16 then drew 0-0 with Portugal in the quarters and lost 3-1 on pens with Lampard, Gerrard & Carragher all missing theirs. I know England, or any team, do not have a divine right for anything but that tournament was a hard watch for a team that could, and should, have delivered so much better. 2010 wasn't much better. The most valued squad in the tournament yet finished 2nd in the Group to USA. We drew our first two against the USA (1-1) and Algeria (0-0) and finally beat the mighty Slovenia 1-0 in the last game. OK, the round of 16 game against Germany was famous for Lampard's goal not given but Germany were so much better than us. Even if that goal had been allowed and made it 2-2, I really don't think it would have been the springboard to go on and win the game, Germany were that much better and would have just gone up a gear. They were not golden and do not deserve the moniker. [Post edited 13 Oct 15:12]
