Hello all, my turn for a little bit of advice please :) I live in a typical suburban 1930's semi-detached house. Roof is original tile so the whole house is coming up for 100 years old. When I bought the place 4 1/2 years ago had the full survey and it didn't pick up anything untoward but they did say houses of this age with an original roof may eventually need work done, as with anything that ages. Had quite a torrential 10 minute downpour yesterday and there was a small leak in the front bedroom. Nothing much, no bucket needed but water was clearly getting in. When it rains 'normally' there's never an issue so it felt to me that water was getting in at an angle that is not usually expected. I went up into the loft and no signs of any ingress so may be a gap where the roof and dorma extension meet. Still, decided to call someone in (local roofer, good reputation) and although they pretty much agreed it was abnormal conditions yesterday, having gone into the loft themselves felt that there was 'sweating' as there were stains on the underside of the tiles and some were very slightly damp to touch (again, could just be from forced entry after yesterday). There's no membrane and there is insulation wadding that's just held in place by itself between the rafters. He said he's not here to spend my money and tell me I need a whole new roof but he said it could do with all new tiles & batons to make it fully whole again. He said he could just repair what may have caused the leak yesterday but other issues may come up in the future so could just be coming back making repair after repair whereas a full replacement would make the roof as new for decades to come. Has anyone had any experience of this and is it a false economy to keep patching up. Another house move (not just because of the roof because it's not that bad, it's not going to cave in) would see £30-35k alone would be gone in stamp duty and estate agents fees. I'd rather use that sort of money to keep the current place nice. There's nothing wrong with it. Thanks in advance :) [Post edited 7 Jul 10:24]

OK, I’ll start this one… “Bachmann Turned Over, QPR drive” (ok, not that good) “Header! Header! Header!” (think Tora Tora Tora) “Baah humbug” (seasonal ;) ) “Smyth toys with Watford” (see what I did there) |

Something to keep everyone busy during the international break :) When is a band not a band and when is a solo artist not a solo artist?..... Always intrigued me that 'Bryan Adams' is always classed (and named) as a solo artist yet he's been with pretty the same band most of his career. It's not him plus a large bunch of rotating support musicians. Conversely, The Eels are classed as band when it's really just Mark Everett plus rotating musicians. I mean, Queen could have just been 'Freddie Mercury' and some other blokes. Same with the Beatles and so on..... |

Having gone to the game on Saturday, my first at LR this season, and taken both my kids of which it was the very first game for my 6 year old daughter ("I don't like that team in yellow" she proclaimed at the end), I have booked tickets for the three of us against PNE. We've not seen QPR win at LR in four visits (all defeats) so it surely must change at some point, hell, I'd even take a score draw...... |

Recently I've be getting a few texts such as; "Table for four booked on 24/02/2024 at the Touchal Arms. Please click on this link www.xxxxxxx.com for more details or reply STOP if you don't want any updates" Well, I've not booked a table for dinner so it's easy to reply STOP but this then confirms your phone number is live. Clicking on the web link would be even worse I presume. The more sophisticated they become, the more aware and vigilant we have to be. |

Long story short, my missus has been having a long running battle with her company (large well known global company) mainly over the fact she can only do a certain shift pattern due to having to leave at a certain time (around 5pm) to pick our kids up from the child minder. They have refused to accommodate. She's never looked to be doing less hours, just the shift pattern that starts early and ends early rather than late start>late finish. It's been going on for ages and I've just found out she's being dismissed for stealing company property.... apple juice. We'll speak more when she gets home but surely this is absolutely bonkers??? |
