Pubs for Derby?
at 12:19 24 Oct 2025

The last few times I've been, the Brunswick has been home fans only. We usually do the Alex now, but we went in the Smithfield this year, which was a great pub too. Loads of different beers and quick service considering how many people get in there before a game. Both the Alex and Smithfield are away-friendly/tolerant.

Déjà vu all over again for Stéphan’s resurgent Rangers – Report
at 22:59 6 Oct 2025

Pasture is great. Probably the best steak in the city, really good service, and a nice atmosphere. Gets booked-up super quick, so we've booked tables at odd times before. Certainly not cheap, but still value for money for a treat.

If you find yourself down our end of Bedminster, Souk Kitchen, Cor, and Sonny Stores are all excellent. If you're after a quicker cheaper meal, then Pizzarova do great pizzas, and Mangosteen is good value for money, albeit somewhere where they like to get you in-and-out (they're also on Cotham Hill and Glos Road).

Elsewhere in town, off the top of my head, I don't think you can go wrong with Bokman, Root, Pasta Ripiena, Cotto, Marmo, Bravas, Caper and Cure, Little French (not been to their other restaurant, 1 York Place(?) but that is supposed to be v good too). Honestly, there are loads of good restaurants throughout the city. Quick lunch in town, then Matina at St Nick's market is fantastic and there are plenty of good alternatives there too. Dongnae (?) is supposed to be v good and is the same people as Bokman. Cotham Hill, Wapping Wharf, Chandos Road, I would probably say are the best spots for clusters of good restaurants.

And if you're travelling by train, Harts Bakery at BTM is mint for savouries or sweet treats.

Sounds like you had a great time - glad you enjoyed yourself in sunny BS3. I love North Street and was in Noah's myself last week. A lovely spot despite it's unpromising location! The are far more attractive parts of the city, but I count myself extremely fortunate to live here. Love it to bits and wouldn't move even if we won the lottery.

As a neutral, I thought a draw would have been about right. Rangers well on top before the first goal, but City should have scored through Twine at 0-0, probably should have had a pen when Dunne clattered Borges, and at least one of Mehmeti, McCrorie or Yu should have scored. Smyth does push McCrorie, but I agree that he needs to be stronger than that, even if that would probably get flagged with VAR.

With the ball, Rangers were about 100 x better than last season and played some nice stuff. City probably found it easier to get round the back than last year, but that might be in large part to both sides setting up more positively this season.

You definitely benefitted from City's injury crisis, as the only CB with pace - Vyner - had to play in CM, with neither Atkinson nor Dickie exactly speed merchants. Pring at LB, Bird and Knight in CM are all big misses, and City are also missing Williams and Stokes in CM.

As for Sinclair Armstrong... City's support has been amazingly patient considering he has been absolute fu cking pony 90% of the time, but that patience is wearing thin with some. You can probably get shorter odds on Vitek scoring than Armstrong. Riis is decent, but there can't be many Championship sides with worse options up front.

Great support from Rangers.

Finally saw a win!

My brother only gets to 2-3 Tottenham away games a year, and once managed to go 18 years without seeing an away win. Which is a long time to wait.

From Elgin City v Queen of the South - this should be hanging in an art gallery somewhere:

I caught the ball at an Aberdeen v Hibs midweeker at Pittodrie when I was about nineteen. I panicked, quickly threw the ball straight into the hands of the Aberdeen player who was asking for it, he took a quick throw, they raced up the pitch and almost scored. The bloke sitting along from me said, "Lucky for you they didnae score then, you stupid cun t". Which was fair enough.

Caught the ball at Llantwit Major v Enfield Town last year. Stayed composed and didn't instigate a quick counter attack for the opposition.

Teams called Rangers losing 5-0 by half time

Glad you enjoyed them - I watched a few too when I remembered they were on. As you say, not the greatest in terms of technique, but quite a few derbies, old school grounds under the lights with a decent atmosphere, and teams going at it.

Arbroath, Ayr, and Raith are on my list of grounds I have to get to at some point. Would love to see this mad stand at some point too:

Treating Cup Competitions Seriously
at 14:33 28 Aug 2025

Fulham v Man Utd at the weekend had VAR giving a debatable penalty for Man Utd (Bassey was grappling with Mount, but was wrestling free from him). They then followed that up with VAR failing to highlight the obvious two handed push on Bassey which cleared him out the way and gave Utd a free header which led directly to the goal. VAR in the PL just seems to be someone in an office getting things wrong rather than the officials at the game. I would sooner just have the officials at the ground get it right/wrong and save everyone the complete buzz kill of having to wait around to find out what's happening. Especially when VAR seems to get as much wrong as it gets right.

Watching them blame the "diddy" clubs that they have to play in Scotland, for not giving them enough competitive matches is the usual whinge, but Rangers can't really claim that this year having failed to beat Dundee, Motherwell, and St Mirren.

It's a funny world where you spend decades poaching the best players from the competition, often to just sit them on your bench, and then complain that no-one can give you a decent game.

Once you get away from the Old Firm, there's a lot to like about Scottish football. Some great, atmospheric, and quirky/dilapidated grounds, that are a nice break from Stoke/Saints/Boro etc.

I'm sure Russell Martin is a lovely bloke, but I'm really enjoying just how shi t Rangers are at the moment. Partly because his footballing philosophy is boring, but mainly because it's funny watching a club which has 'Simply the best' as it's anthem, struggling against Dundee and getting smashed 6-0 after 50 minutes in Belgium. Hopefully we may be returning to a time when possession stats aren't the number one thing taken into consideration when appointing a head coach.

Looks like Armstrong is available
at 10:36 28 Aug 2025

Armand Traore and Sinclair Armstrong on the same pitch. Wow. The two least composed finishers in English football, facing off against one another. Armstrong blazes one over the bar, then Traore almost clears the roof of the Hammersmith with a similar effort. It's a strange experience to watch a forward bearing down on your goal and to just feel totally relaxed.

Lots of support for Armstrong last night, but a few singing, "If Armstrong scores, we're in the Thames " by the end. Looked better playing out wide in a two - never a central striker to me. Did a good run and ball across the six yard box late on but that was pretty much it on the positive side.

The City crowd have been very supportive of him and he gets his name sung because their supporters can see that he's struggling/struggled. When he fu cks up, no one even gets angry - the whole ground just sort of silently looks at the floor.

Heading to our game v City at the Cottage tonight. Absolutely nailed on that Armstrong will score the winner.

Completely agree with this. It really is an incredibly emotionally difficult place to visit. I would book tickets in advance and do the trip on your last day. It really does stay with you - as it should. We did a private driver which worked well for our group. A great city for mooching around and having a pint.

Rest of the Championship thread 25/26
at 18:12 20 Aug 2025

He was at least busy when he came on against MK Dons, but of 3 good positions he found himself in, he blazed one miles over, smashed one wide from a difficult angle when he should have squared it, and I think the other one went wide too. Plays with his head down the whole time, lacks composure, and just doesn't look a footballer. Too on, the City Technical director's thinking was that Armstrong could be the next Semenyo... it could happen, but it seems unlikely.

World Club Cup Final
at 16:18 14 Jul 2025

The Saudis have bankrolled the whole tournament through investing $1bn in DAZN, which then spent that $1bn for the rights to the tournament, and made all games free to air. Infantino makes a complete transparent mockery of the World cup rotation and bidding process to award Saudi the World cup in 2034, and in return, they finance Infantino's project and get their clubs access to major European clubs in competitive football.

To me, this looks to be partly about normalizing intercontinental club football, probably as an opportunity to get Saudi clubs playing big European clubs rather than pi ssing about in a league that no-one in the wider world cares about. If a European Super league were to happen, then I would be very surprised in the Saudis didn't try and get involved. That would solve the issue they have with players in their prime opting to stay in Europe for 1/10th of what they could be earning in Saudi.

Unfortunately, money talks, and the Saudis have more than most, and are happy to pay whatever, to whoever, to get their way.

Also interesting that of all the properties in NYC, FIFA make the politically-divisive decision to open an office in Trump Tower.

So what's the new song ?

He's Breton, he's French,
He smokes Gauloises on the bench,
Julian, Julian
He's Breton, he's French,
He reads Sartre on the bench,
Julian, Julian

You can have that for free.
