 | Forum Reply | If we got promoted at 21:45 4 Jun 2025
It seems highly unlikely that we can ever finish in the top 6 of the Premiership the way the finances and ffp are currently set up. Even if the richest person on earth took us on, the limitations of ffp and the fact you already have around 7 London clubs in the Premiership, doesn't make us that enticing. Sure we could do a Luton or Ipswich one season and get promoted but it is looking more and more difficult to stay up to the point that the established clubs look very secure. It doesn't help that some of the recent promotions to the promised land recently came up from league 1 while we continue hovering in boggy ground around 16th place desperately trying not to sink. Right now we look more geared up for league 1 than the top league but even if I overdose on happy pills and had strange dreams of us ever returning to the Premiership what would we achieve. In the 70's to 90's when things were more balanced we won nothing. We had some good and entertaining teams with some top managers so it is hard to see us winning anything even if we see the Premier League ever again. We can hark back to better times but yet lesser teams outdid us in winning trophies. In 1973 Burnley and us were the best teams in division 2 but Sunderland won the FA Cup. Stan Bowles could never understand how they achieved that. In 1976 with our best ever team it was second division Southampton that lifted the FA Cup. I think Newcastle knocked us out of both cups but we won both league fixtures. In the 80's we handed Oxford the League Cup with a display that looked as though we were involved in match fixing. Coventry always seemed to be fighting relegation but they lifted the FA Cup in 87. I think the following season we finished 5th in 88 but it was Luton who won the League Cup. In effect teams who languished behind us in the league were winning honours when we had better teams than them. Sadly I think we missed the boat in the 23 years from 73-96 during our best ever period in our history. |

I believe the credit George got was that Minder really became about him. The idea of the programme at the start was geared towards Terry being the main character. The way George played Arthur made him the main character instead. Hence when Dennis left, Minder still continued with George. I think the chap who played Ray is an Arsenal fan in real life. |

I noticed 19 teams in next seasons Champions League come from just four countries. So basically 15 teams there who didn't win their league involved. High time they changed the tournament name to reflect their Super league. |

If I heard right their 9th European winners trophy. On a totally different planet to us in the last 30 years. |

I assume with Sky increasing their live games, from 128 this season to 215 next, that this will bring in more money for the Premier league clubs. Add to that about half the league will be in Europe next season, it looks increasingly difficult for the three promoted clubs to survive. This season the three promoted clubs looked doomed well before the season ended. |

True enough. If Sunderland lost they would not have parachute money like us. Now we have to play Sheffield Utd next season still with their parachute money. Chances are in two seasons time Sunderland will be back down with a financial advantage from their one Premiership season. I won't be surprised to see Wrexham and Birmingham bypassing us next. |

It actually felt like United and Spurs gave up on the league some time ago and put all their eggs into winning the Europa League. Let's face it beating teams from weaker leagues with less games than in the league is an easier path to get into the Champions League through winning the Europa League than getting into the top 4 of the Premier League. |

Ange always said he wins trophies in his second season and has been true to his word. Not bad for a team who only had 3 shots and 27% possession tonight in what was a terrible game to watch. What really rankles is the huge financial gulf between us and Spurs has grown ever wider and not really deserved for their season efforts. The only glimmer of hope for the game is Newcastle, Palace and Spurs are a change in names lifting trophies. |

What a load of garbage that was. I don't think Spurs had a shot second half. The winning goal was so bad it summed the whole thing up. Spurs could benefit by £100 million for serving up that slop. [Post edited 21 May 22:01]

Rancid game so far as appetising as our draw with Cardiff. As soon as I type that a naff own goal in keeping with a poor game is scored. |

No. Not the first team which is who we all follow. Won't count on the honours board. |

That's it then. Not glad all over. My one bragging right with Palace mates gone. I was always able to remind them as they look down on us from the Premiership that we had won a major trophy and they hadn't. Now all of that has gone and it will be they won a bigger cup than us and City a better team to beat than West Brom so their achievemen is greater. This is a disaster for my personal life. Was bad enough hearing Oxford and Luton fans giving me stick for them lifting the League cup in the 80's when I used to work so now Palace fans can lord it over us. This is s grim day. |

Ìn a quandary about this. Don't like City and what they represent but don't particularly want Palace winning either. If they do win they join the list of clubs that can say they have won the FA Cup unlike us. Bad enough teams like Wigan, Portsmouth, Southampton, Sunderland etc can say they won the FA Cup since our league Cup triumph. The way we approach the cups in the past 30 years suggests we will never appear in any future Cup finals ever again. |

All fans of Scottish Championship clubs do this but by and large they are all youngsters in their teens by the look of them. I think Motherwell fans started the trend in Scotland but that is just when I first noticed it up there. |

Strange chap. Did a great job with Luton and now Charlton but abject at Stoke and Southampton. As we are similar to Stoke in terms of not being in contention for promotion since our respective relegations, I suspect he would fail with us too the way we are run. |

You could dislike Spurs more because they got into the football league instead of us over 100 years ago and perhaps we might have become the bigger club. They also stopped us winning the FA Cup in 82, our only shot at it. We totally outplayed them in the replay so that rankles. It is annoying we are not an established club in the Premiership while United and Spurs are crap. We could have improved on our one win at United and our record at Spurs which is not brilliant either. Sadly we are worse than both of them... I didn't realise Charlton had so many fans. Thousands of them surrounded me at London Bridge and later at King's Cross tonight. |

True I suppose but our record in London derbies is pretty miserable this millenium. Haven't we lost four of our last six meetings with Charlton even when they were going down we lost. The worse the opponents the worse we seem to play. There was little quality in the Orient win tonight but I don't think we have much quality either as things stand. |

I think just about all clubs lock out exits in the first half to stop people trying to get in for free after kick off. If the fire had broken out after 70 minutes then chances are the exits would have been unlocked in preparation for the end of the game. I recall Gaby Logan doing a Sky documentary a few years ago about the Bradford fire as she was in the ground that day. You wonder when you see her on telly if she ever gets nightmares about that day. |

The cracking match reports are the only consistent thing about following this club. I do hope you will be reporting on more home wins next season. Only away wins to be found in the last 13 games mirroring two seasons ago when wins at Burnley and Stoke kept us up like Oxford and Preston this time round. We can't keep having seasons where we post 16 home games not winning. Have a good break from it all. |

Clinton Morrison doesn't understand why we loaned out Charlie Kelman. Perhaps we should go for Bromley's Michael Cheek who has scored something like 25 goals in their first season in league football. Big gamble but someone we could afford. |
