I don't think Kone has a great all around game right now (which is probably to be expected given his background) so when he doesn't score it doesn't really feel like he's contributing much. Luckily a) he IS scoring at a good lick and b) whatever you think of our coaching staff I'd have money on them doing a better job bringing that side of his game out than a non league club. I'm with you on Burrell, quick becoming a favorite of mine and even when he's not scoring if he keeps up the effort off the ball he'll be a cult hero here in no time. |

Agree with your first two lines but the third seems harsh, the results over the past couple of months have been great and driven by some of the changes he made. Got it wrong today, but has been positive overall |

Nobody buys a football club these days because they love the club. It's a gamble. They are betting that the value goes up over time and they can make money. The thing that has the biggest influence on that is the players so that's where the investment is. Until that changes this problem is only going to get worse |

Before I had kids yeah. The challenge was also trying to follow QPR, F1, whatever I could get out of rugby and cricket at the same time. With kids pretty much everything except NFL and QPR has fallen by the wayside... |

One of the things I like about football in general is that it's one of the few places in life where the people around you have absolutely nothing to do with your political beliefs. It should in theory expose you to people and viewpoints that you wouldn't otherwise experience which is a healthy thing, and I think this is why people try and "force" politics into football occasionally (on this message board and others). Delicate balance though when this is one of the places I go to get AWAY from that. |

I think it's just the championship. Two pretty even teams, sometimes breaks don't go your way. Another day we win that, some lessons to be learned, including starting Frey, but while I'm disappointed and grumpy, like I always am after we lose, I'm not worried, which frankly is a change from most of the last 5 years after a loss, and a pleasant surprise. |

We also actually won those games. I read an incredible stat yesterday, Italy, who I'd argue are in a similar tier to England in terms of history and expectations, haven't played a world cup knockout game since 2006. They've either been knocked out in group stage or not even made the world cup since. |

I think some of it is natural evolution too right? Someone figured out that if you kept possession it gave you an advantage so people developed tactics around that. Now when you over commit to that, people find a way to beat that system, just like they'll find a way to beat whatever this evolves too. It's always been the same back with the evolution from 2-3-5 to more modern stuff, xG can highlight that presumably but it's the same conclusions that humans have been coming to over the years anyway. I'm just grateful we're not doing that Italian thing when they tried playing without a forward and the games are actually going to be more exciting to watch again now |

I give Southgate more credit than most for that reason alone. Hugely talented squad, yes, but he actually got them doing consistently well, unlike in the past when we have had hugely talented squads and done fck all with it. I also think that narrative between him being a good and bad manager because he's won nothing changing because a couple of players missed penalties is ridiculous . |

I don't think he has a great all around game to be honest but he certainly knows where the goal is and that's more than enough. Reminds me a bit of Andy Thompson in that regard. Was in my younger days but I remember always being unimpressed, right up to the point where he scored. |

Wasn't that basically the HMV logo? Did I make that up? |
 | Forum Reply | Burrell - who identified / signed him? at 23:45 4 Oct 2025
Think he probably tops out at 7 or 8 this year but that's ok, there's so much more to his game than that and he gives us a totally different dimension. Had fairly low expectations and he's already blown them out of the water. Terrific signing. |

Great header and agree. Given that Smyth has a tendency to hit the deck from anything stronger than a whisper in the ear, probably fair to say if it had been the other way round he'd have been screaming for a peno though! |
