No from me. Not because I don't rate JWP, who was instrumental in keeping us up with Ralph and a brilliant pairing with Oriel. But I do think it's time to move on and the younger players will only improve by playing - Jander, Charles and Sesay. Having said that Nuno and West Ham deserve one another completely lacking in any class, sucking up to self entitled fans by creating a story around JWP who is an excellent professional in every sense. Just don't pick him, excluding him from the squad is a disgrace and should be reserved for real troublemakers which he clearly isn't. Hope they are relegated and Nuno is sacked.

Just wish I could warm to to Will Still.
at 16:37 29 Sep 2025

These press conferences are always repetitive because, truthfully, there isn't much to say beyond an update on injuries. We've seen the match so another description of what happened isn't necessary. He isn't going to give any specific tactical details. The transfer window is closed so nothing much to say beyond the usual platitudes. I like him ok but he needs to start winning soon.

League plus two cup competitions for each club would stop the whining and fixing but they won't do it for all the financial reasons listed.

Wood and Jelert have to start on Saturday
at 14:26 25 Sep 2025

THB is the wild card here. I think the expectation of him leaving informed the purchase of Quarshie and Stephens extended contract as a club rather than first team captain. I suspect both THB and Stephens are very positive, strong personalities in training and bring Still support from last year's group. But their game confidence is totally shot after three completely different managerial approaches, all of which failed miserably. If Still is to succeed in cutting out the losing mentality and general fragility he needs to leave out THB, Stephens, Downes, Aribo, and maybe Manning, Archer and Armstrong until we start to win again. Easier said than done but he now has alternatives who could do well if given a run of games to improve.

Disrespectful I know...

I'm not sure that they are not playing for the boss but this is a continuation of much that happened last year with the collective confidence pretty shot. In retrospect the transfer window was a mess and we are left with too many players from last year. THB, Stephens, Downes, Aribo, Edozie, Archer and Armstrong all needed to go. Only Manning and Fraser have started the season moderately well. Sesay and Robinson looked good in pre-season. Downs and Quarshie need a chance. Edwards and Wood need a run of games together to establish a partnership. Still needs to be really strong and take a risk with a completely new team if he wants to banish the legacy of last year regardless of current status and experience within the squad.

Not good enough
at 17:44 14 Sep 2025

Nothing to be done now the window has closed but get behind the manager and the team. Glad to see four at the back. Charles and Downes have yet to develop as an effective midfield duo. Fellows did ok and will find his feet like Azaz one hopes. My concern is that 4-2-3-1 needs a striker that can hold the ball up, bring others into play and get on the end of crosses. Not sure which of our four strikers can do that role.

Edozie and Aribo

Thought Edozie would go to Belgium today but no word as yet. Shame as the squad is going to be overlarge again if both he and Aribo stay. Aribo could still go to Turkey / Saudi I guess.

Oriol
at 17:24 8 Sep 2025

Great back up for Downes as straight forward holding midfielder. He never had pace but strength and ability to shield the ball and make a simple pass. If Aribo goes there is definitely a gap for Oriol. Are Aribo and Edozie going?

SIGNING NUMBER 4

If these all come to fruition, I've got Edwards, Armstrong, Brereton- Diaz sold or loaned in addition to Edozie and Aribo. We must enjoy this moment of hope before cruel reality sets in.

We've got six centre backs including Charlie Taylor so something has to give, I guess. Quashie and Stephens are nailed on. THB has no suitors so he will stay. Wood has done the best so far so Edwards would be the one to go on loan. However, like others posters I'd like to see him tried as a defensive midfielder alternating with Downes if Charles is playing further forward as seems the preference. Whatever happens we need to establish a first choice centre back partnership and commit to it not the endless three at the back rotation.

We will be weaker when transfer window closes.
at 20:21 21 Aug 2025

Teams are always weaker in terms of personel after relegation, with the better ones sold to balance the financial impact. On the plus side we are playing weaker teams in the Championship. After two relagations our team is significantly weaker than the one that was competitive in the Premier League some years ago. We will have to build again I guess.

Quarshie
at 19:18 20 Aug 2025

Quarshie is very right footed and might be better on the right side of the defence. Edwards was excellent for QPR last year playing in the centre of the defence, clearing things up rather than as a combative CB against a strong forward. I'd like to see a back three of Woods, Edwards and Taylor against Norwich in the cup if THB, Stephens and Quarshie is the first choice against Stoke.

Talking of full backs and Preston. Thierry Small seemed to do very well for them yesterday, brilliant cross for their winning goal.

Northampton Game Matchday Thread
at 22:21 12 Aug 2025

I guess the result is all that matters and we know it's really early in the season, but Saints were very, very poor tonight. No movement so slow passing in possession. No cohesion on the pitch, second best in most challenges and nobody going past defenders from a Div One team. Will Still has been lucky so far but we will need to improve massively on Sunday against Ipswich.

Fair play to all those banging on about the importance of experience. Stephens our best defender by some distance.Quashie and Edwards inexperienced against the likes of Windows and Moore. Manning and Fraser both showed up well and Manning's goal was class. Thought Charles and Robinson did well and Downes worked hard. Still waiting for the strikers to turn up.

For what it's worth. I like this shirt and would have been quite happy with a red version and a yellow version for the home and away kits. Too much time on my hands!

We are great at making average players even worse.

I've not got it in for Jack Stephens but last season was horrific and the scars will linger on. We can only play two centre backs and Jack can't be one of them. Edwards/ Wood and Quashie should surely be our first choice. They all have enough experience at championship level and the potential to get better if properly coached and developed.

Love watching the Lionesses. Couldn't care less whether Tuchel's over-hyped, over-paid Prima Donna's win anything.

Squad for Spain trip looks like a bit of a cull

If you include the injured players as possible squad members we are still at 31. Only Bednarek and ABK, who have played no part in pre-season so far, are definitely excluded unless Dibling, Matzuki, THB and Downes are absent for reasons other than injury.
