All this is true, Clive. Unusual how they have learned from some of their mistakes (transfers) and not from others (binning off a player without actually moving him on). But I wonder have we written off Walsh prematurely? I am a fan, but I know he struggled with the ball at his feet when attempting to play out from the back (he wasn't alone). Now that they have dispensed with this 'game model' I think he could thrive. Strong, and commands his area, really well. Not as good a shot stopper as Nardi I concede, but still young enough (unlike Nardi), to work on the weaker aspects of his game. |

A lovely goal. Didn't he score a similar one for us in the cup? He gets lots of abuse on here for being 'useless' which he clearly isn't. Yes he hasn't kicked on at all, since he left, but if Burrell or Kone scored that goal we would be in raptures. Pleased for him |

This is true. I have said this before that you know after 5 minutes what kind of performance we will put in. If it is lack lustre and lethargic like today against poor team (Derby, Oxford /SW) we will draw or lose narrowly. If we are that way v a decent team we will get tanked (Coventry/Burnley) It seems to be a malaise that effects the entire squad even those like Chair who hasn't played for ages. It has to be attitudinal, there is no other reason. And manager after manager cannot seem to stamp out 'can't be arsed' that seems to descend every few games. Then they will fly out of the traps in other games, Charlton/Stoke for example, for no obvious reason other than they 'fancy it'. We will never be serious play-off contender until we sort it out. Derby a much stiffer opposition than Swansea. I have been surprised by their slow start, but they seem to be getting their act together slowly but surely. That said we are solid on the road recently, concede very little despite a ropey defence. This has all the hallmarks of a 1-1. Chair to equalise, after coming on in the 60th minute. |

Excellent response, Nix, much more articulately that I could have put it. I think we put out the youngest team in the Championship v Watford and Coventry and we know how that went. 'Developing young talent' is not just about the academy, anybody under the age of 25 should be capable of being coached to improve, although you could argue that Paul Smyth at 28 has definitely improved his end product this season. But exhibit A for a player who has been improved by coaching is Madsen. He has gone from a liability to one of our most important players - some of that might be with becoming familiar with the Championship, but most of it is down to Stephan and his team |

It’s a very good point, but I think by definition, ‘evolution’ is a slow process over a prolonged period of time. What we have seen since Coventry is a ‘revolution’ borne from JS’s desperation, frustration and no little embarrassment . Revolutions by nature are rudimentary and short-lived as they bring about significant change in a relatively short time-span. One of those rudimentary changes was to hit Burrell early and use his pace which has largely worked (and credit to the lad, he has scored more regularly than I expected) Now with the return of the cultured Chair and imminent return of the pacy Poku, we should see this gradually become more refined and less reliant on ‘direct approach’ - that’s my hope anyway. We have so many potential options and combinations up front, that it make take a while to find the most potent, but the potential is definitely there |

I think it was a normal enough reaction when we hadn’t put the game out of reach with 10 minutes the go. A 2nd goal would obviously have eased the nerves and we may even have gone on and got a third. However, when it was just the one, we were bound to get nervy towards the end. Any away win is good and the clean sheet is a bonus. Also an away win is the perfect antidote to a home loss. We go to Derby now with the pressure off a bit, while a win would be nice, a draw would represent a decent return from 2 away games |

I know we live in a world of instant gratification, but a little more respect for last season’s top scorer wouldn’t go amiss . Single-handedly turned the game around at Luton when we couldn’t buy a win. Also earned us a vital point v Milwall. |

Good discussion. I think the inconsistency has to be expected as it comes with youth. Not youth in age, but youth in terms of Championship experience. We have often talked on here about the different milestones that you expect to hit when you have 50, 75, 100 Championship games under your belt. Like others I feel he is not in his best position out wide, but then he delivered a killer ball into the box that led to Kone's equaliser v BC and scored a fine goal coming in from the right v Stoke. I would like to see him more central, deeper than a 10, more an 8 perhaps, but not sure he has the engine for that. Talented player, but not the finished article yet |

Well documented on here that I am not a Nardi fan, but not blaming him for either goal today, I have spoken recently about how fragile our defence is and today was a perfect example.. We were 'out QPR'd for the first goal, long ball over the top, striker too quick for our defenders. Even so, Nardi saved the initial shot and and it is reasonable to expect that wwith THRRE defenders to ONE striker that someone would have cleared the rebound. Second one is even more laughable defensively. Free kick barely chest height allowed to travel past an army of blue and white hooped shirts before being nodded home from a yard out. En route someone stuck out a lazy leg trying to flick it away instead of attacking the ball and sending it fifty yards up the pitch. Neither goal on Nardi - rank/lazy defending |

Can’t embed videos, but my daughter does a little part time singing at the weekends to bring in a few extra bob. She does a very passable version of Cher’s ‘If I could Turn Back Time’, which probably could be our anthem or the past decade or so. Enjoy the game everyone and for those attending, keep safe [Post edited 18 Oct 9:37]

That's a fair point, but fragility doesn't always mean goal concession I don't fully understand XGA, but I can think of two examples of teams missing 'sitters' against us. Twine missed a very presentation chance when we were carved open down our right hand side. And a Stoke striker managed to head the ball over from a yard out. |

All valid comments Brian. I suppose like any formation, as long as we keep on not losing it is ‘working’. It’s like JS sending on Vale and Smyth v BC and he is the master tactician - whereas he got his substitutions against Oxford ‘all wrong’ I actually have a bigger concern with our full-backs. RND is limited enough, not bad going forward and will receive some protection from Saito but not from Dembele. Jimmy, is not a full back and is struggling more this season. Again, good protection from Smyth, less from Vale. I think oppo teams will now target our wide areas more, as our defensive midfield is more solid and this will only increase the pressure on our FB’s - with the added ‘bonus’ for the opposition that Nardi couldn’t catch a cold. As I mentioned on the match thread, I feel we are very potent going forward, but very fragile defensively. |

Excellent post Brian. I think there is a difference between 'not being in control ' of midfield (BC) and being 'wide open' (Cov) and I think we are more comfortable being out of possession as long as the game is being played 'in front' of us instead of 'through' us. A second factor that negates your concerns about the high press is that we now have a speedster like Burrell who can get in behind and 'turn the oppo defence around' which makes the high press less necessary as we can now transition much faster from deep in our own half. A third and related factor is the massive improvement in Madsen, which has the twin bonus of now winning the ball back ( who'd have thunk it?) but even more crucially he can move the ball forward quickly and accurately thereby getting Burrell, Saito into advanced dangerous positions. Finally these quick transitions are causing opposition managers food for thought which means they are committing less bodies forward and therefore putting less pressure on our central midfield areas |
