I think 'QPR Chinese Whispers' would be a more apt title for a thread based on the summer so far |

I always expect zilch when we go to Blackburn |

I don't know what my sauce is but I thought he was looking for 4 and we offered 3? |
 | Forum Reply | Jimmy Dunne new contract at 16:42 18 Jun 2025
At 27 it is extremely unlikely he signed a one year deal. I suspect three with an option of a fourth, which is essentially what he was looking for. |

My thoughts too, Brian. Obviously great news but 'Insulting nonsense ' indeed |

It is by far the weirdest transfer rumour year in the sense that we haven't signed ANYBODY for the first team yet. Equally, we haven't lost anybody except Paal yet. A number of players, - Walsh, Cook, Field, Smith, Frey, Varane - have signed contract extensions, which gives a little stability I guess. Dunne of course is the big one that we want to see resolved and while the (infuriating) silence has become the norm at our end, you would think that if someone had signed him, they would be trumpeting that on their own website. As it is, there is complete radio silence. There are still a number of positions (particularly FB's) that need resolving if we are to make any fist at surviving next season - oh and a new manager would be helpful. |

Afraid its a battle for survival with Cork this year |

Some of the rules are daft, like handing your opponent the ball when you are penalised for over carrying and 50 metres us too severe a penalty for arguing - 30 was fine. But without a doubt the 2 pointer has transformed the game for the better. Couple of weeks ago we (Sligo) were playing Kildare in the Tailteann cup. After 50 mins we were 15 points down. Before this year that was game long over and the last 20 minutes everyone going through the motions until the final whistle. Instead we kicked 5, 2 pointers and 3 singles to bring it back to 2. Still list but it made for a hell of an exciting final 10 minutes |

Rumoured to be coming to the LoI. Most likely Shamrock Rovers or Shelbourne I suppose. Have to say I am a little surprised his career didn't kick on more. Early on, I thought he was Championship standard. [Post edited 16 Jun 9:34]

Main thing is they are out Brian and I won't have to listen to my 'noisy neighbours' yammering on about how this is 'their' year. And they can't even blame the 'curse' anymore. Not enough to play well against Donegal and Tyrone, their breath-taking arrogance meant they did not turn up against Cavan and that was their undoing. [Post edited 16 Jun 8:05]

Bet you weren't complaining about his legs when he boomed one in at Preston? He's 30 for goodness sake. Yes his form dipped last season after a long- term injury , but he was not alone in that. To say his legs are 'gone' is absurd. I hope we keep him for at least one more year. [Post edited 16 Jun 21:24]

You are absolutely correct. Funny I always associate the likes of Hanson and Lawrenson with 'later', but Hanson joined in '77 (he was 70 lately I believe) and Lawro a few years later. I suppose they did replace the likes of Smith and Hughes but of course they were very much part of that strong Liverpool era. Thompson I didn't rate so hhighly, always capable of a silly mistake, usually through a lack of concentration, so not a top defender imo |

Think we have been at sixes and sevens for some time and it has nothing to do with our keepers |

I mentioned Bowles in my intro, but Marsh is a good shout. Currie another man who didn't win too many caps. I think 'flamboyant' players struggled for International recognition back in the day. I deliberately said 'rarely' rather than 'never" as I think they are different things. A player who picked up a couple of caps but then got left out (like Hector or Le Tiss) were obviously considered at one point and then failed to impress or whatever. Players that were overlooked completely or just unlucky (Austin and Vardy were both on the bench for that end of season game Vardy got on Austin didn't) or didn't play for a 'glamorous' club. |

As an 'antidote' to Brian's thread, how about some top players (again from back in the day) who barely got capped for England. Going to start the ball rolling with Hector, Bowles, George and Worthington [Post edited 13 Jun 13:54]

Loved Cor! And all mentioned by the OP. My mother was English and my father football mad so this left a strong English /football influence not shared by my peers at the time. Great memories of more innocent times |

That whole Liverpool defence was quite intriguing. Any one of them was only average on their own (Clemence better than Shilton- no way) Joey Jones, Tommy Smith, Emlyn Hughes, Larry Lloyd (,Clough made him into a top individual player) Chris Lawlor Phil Neal. But the sum of the parts under Shankley/Paisley was virtually impregnable. It helped of course that their attacking prowess meant that they were not under sustained pressure during games. But it did not necessarily translate onto the International stage. I remember an England manager picking the entire (eligible) Liverpool team. I think it was Ian Callaghan's only cap. I think it was against Switzerland but I am certain it was a dire 0-0 draw. So I guess (with the exception of Kevin Keegan) you could add that entire Liverpool team to your list. |
