Lyndon Dykes
at 09:04 6 Sep 2025

From memory Dykes was more effective than Gray and Austin in both midfield and at the back defending set pieces. He had also not played much as a main striker before he came to us but more as a wide forward.

The box-to-box 8
at 16:50 2 Sep 2025

To be a good 8 I think most of all Morgan needs to improve his passing accuracy. Speed around the park and stamina too, but perhaps some that will come as he gets a bit older and plays more games. I've not really rated him too much apart from some good balls into channels early on, but that was a great hit at Watford.

When I hear about a box to box 8 I think of Gerry Francis too, before his back injury.

Colback was a good quick passer of the ball too, better than Hayden, and Field and Varanne as well I think. Probably considered too old now, I wish him good luck for the future.

In Advanced Talks With Edwards
at 15:06 1 Sep 2025

That is really my only doubt about investing a lot in Edwards. We have seen he is a good player, able to play in defensive midfield, at RB as well as CB, but he isn't the really big CB we need most, and which most Clubs use at CB. We have Akindileni in the Devolopment squad who is big but not 18 yet and maybe not ready yet for the 1st team.

I thought we lost the midfield for periods due to the continual long mostly inaccurate goal kicks from Walsh that flew 20 meters over our midfield. Sometimes we need to play out from the back, vary our play.

Don't agree Madsen faded badly 2nd half, he played very well 1st half, not quite so well 2nd half, but did manage the full 90. Both he and Varanne missed a lot of pre-season and from a far don't look like they are 100 % fit yet. But the good news is with the 2 week break they should be getting fully fit soon.

If the likes of Bennie and Sutton aren't likely to be needed much this season or until January, decent loans / game time should benefit them at League 1 or 2 Clubs, if possible.

Thought he was ok, fitted in seamlessly. Esquerdinha did well too when he came on.

Saito goal

That clip shows it as an even better goal with a really clever chip over the defender's leg than what I thought originally from QPR+, a great goal but with a deflected shot. Not deflected at all apparently.

Field vs Madsen

I forgot about Hayden! He is another competitor for Field's defensive midfield place. I'd quite like to see Field play as the left sided CB alongside Mbengue.

Field vs Madsen
at 10:57 31 Aug 2025

Not sure why the OP compares the 2? Field's natural main attributes are defensive. He makes a good left sided defensive shield type midfielder, or a left sided CB imo. Madsen's natural main attributes are offensive with his technique and quick forward passing, and being able to make dangerous long passes. He's improving the defensive parts of the game. Varane and Field are more comparable to me in that Varane's strengths have been mainly defensive, but to me it looks like with fitness and experience his game going forward will improve. The choice of who to pick in defensive midfield is more between Field and Varene to me if we aren't playing both which would normally be very defensive selection. All this as the squad is today, may change by tomorrow night.

He's made quite a few defence splitting balls in the last games of last season, got a number of assists with them.. He made some today I guess you missed. One long flatish ball straight to Smith which he couldnt control, another found Dunne who headed across goal for Norrinton-Davies to hit the post, another almost lying on the ground which very nearly got one ours free down the left, others too I think.

We did cede midfield to Charlton for periods especially 2nd half but that was no fault of our midfield. The ball was flying meters over their heads from Walshes long punts usually picked up by their players to come straight back at us. We kicked long far too often, I know because we have been so poor at playing out from the back, but we need to learn that because today's long kicking doesnt work when we do it often badly and nearly every time. We need to vary things and we still aren't a team of giants. Kone helps but he didnt win so much in the air. Replacing Walsh with Nardi might.

I thought Madsen was a good player when he first joined us, he then lost confidence and his place in the team. Came back at the end of last season and did very well scoring and assisting playing mainly further forward than where he's played this season. Think he has done ok in the defensive midfield role, we need someone who can move the ball forward which he does, he's tidy on the ball, picks out great long balls forward like that one for Smyth today he couldn't control, and he seems to learning the defensive part of the game.

Varane isn't 100% fit yet I don't think. Not surprising as he's been out injured. Expect him to be ok when he is.

Kone MOM?
at 15:15 30 Aug 2025

Saito for me, won us the Match (huge relief) when he came on and earnt us a big chunk of that fee! Kone was good, as were Madsen especially 1st half, Smith 1st half, both LB's, Varanne looked fitter than at Coventry but not quite there yet. M'buengi mostly good though he could of given them a pen if their player had gone down. Don't know why Walsh was routed on the spot for their goal and some of his kicking was awful, but good on crosses. Dunne not at his best at all and Morrison suspect at times. Think many other Championship teams will score a few if we are that poor in that back 5, we need Nardi back, but great we banked those 3 points today.
