There are much larger problems that affect people day to day but people are distracted by this nonsense.
For example, we have the worst performing and lowest pensions in Europe. Bottom of the pile.
Not only that, the age is going up and up all the time so fewer and fewer people will even live to claim it. We've all paid in all our lives. So where has that money gone? That is billions of pounds. People should be protesting about stuff like that.
I also just interacted with someone on X who said he's hanging flags cos he's "proud of his country". I've asked exactly what he's proud of - the royal family, the nice countryside, the statues...what exactly. I guess he's going to get back to me.

I thinks it's more like a combination of Trump, Farage and the furore around immigration and the boats.
This seems to have the effect of making people want to climb a lamp post and hang a flag on it.
Don't see it myself. Re-claiming our country? To when? I don't remember a time when this place was a paradise. Every period in time had its issues.
Or maybe they just want immigrants booted out and everything will be miraculously fine.

Seems to be a touchy subject - but on my commute to Whiteley each day I notice people are tying uion jacks to bridges over the motorways. Also close to Redbridge roundabout there's a bridge with flags on stating "Southampton Patriots".
I'm not entirely sure what the point is?

Dibling to Palace

Well now Eze has gone to Arsenal, there's a chance Spurs go for Dibling. Then again like Everton I fully expect Daniel Levy to offer 4 pram wheels and a half ounce of baccy, followed by a social media barrage where we are supposed to be grateful and should accept their generous offer.

The last weeks of the window are painful. Just rumours and fake stories. And virtually nothing happens til the last day. Should make the entire window a week long and be done with it.

More VAR controversy
at 14:02 19 Aug 2025

My point was that VAR won't get everything right - or wrong. For every decision there is general outrage it was given, or other fans defending it and saying it was correct.
VAR does not decide if a foul is a foul. People do. It's someone's opinion and interpretation of the laws. Exactly as it was when we just had a ref.
Back then the media ripped him to shreds every week highlighting every mistake and saying we must help the refs with new technology. Now everyone wants rid of it apparently.

But lets face it, it is there for the money so that a team doesn't lose millions from a wrong call and so it's never going to go away.
We wished for it, now we gotta live with it.

More VAR controversy
at 09:07 19 Aug 2025

Loads of talk about var today following the weekend and last night's decisions.
I don't know if the problem is var.
Last night Carragher and Neville thought it was a pen. This morning Stelling and McCoist were convinced it wasn't.
Football is subjective and most calls are a matter of opinion so there will never be total agreement.

Ex players always want ex players to operate var as they have 'played the game at the highest level' but they can't even agree amongst themselves.

Southampton At Ipswich Town The Verdict
at 12:04 18 Aug 2025

I think it was a good point. Not many will get anything at Portman Road this season so it was a decent result.
There were as many questions as answers though but we must remember it's game 2 of the season. We should also remember that the window is open. In a few weeks we may have a different team so anything we get now could be bonus points!
Bazunu was decent and Frazer put in a good shift and showed some quality.
Robinson looks a player but elsewhere it was all pretty much hit and miss.

We looked disorganised at the back, and relatively experienced players seems to panic and rush clearances. Jack was generally good but seems he cannot get through a game without making a potentially calamitous error.
Quarshie was poor but he's young, he's moved to a new country, it's his second league game and he's trying to impress. Let's at least give him time to settle in and feel more comfortable before we decide he's not up to it.

By the end my overriding emotion was relief because we offered little going forwards and it was Ipswich who were pushing hard for a second goal.
On reflection I'm also a bit disappointed as for the bookies favourites, Ipswich weren't great and with the quality we have I thought we could have pushed on for the win.
We really need to sort out both ends of the pitch though.

Today's team selection
at 15:35 17 Aug 2025

I said we'd learn something but im not sure what.
Strange formation and suddenly Frazer who couldn't get a kick when we were at our worst, is now a starting wingback.
Defence does look very suspect and we had no presence up front.
Oh and MF and Robinson looked very good, so he took both off.
Since we've had Martin I genuinely think that I know nothing about football any more.
Apparently the new breed of manager sees things that no one else sees.

Id just like to see a decent performance over 90 minutes. There's been moments so far but no clear pattern.
I don't know if we're genuine promotion contenders about to click into gear, or still a poor side who will be found out against the first decent side we play.
I guess we'll know more after today.

Slight tangent but, how many minutes silence is Jota going to get?
They've done something at every game so far including wreaths and the minutes applause.
It is of course terribly sad and deserves some sort of memorial, but where does it stop?

So, why didn't Ross Stewart start?
at 10:02 11 Aug 2025

Been injured forever but seems to have been fit end of last season. So hes had a full pre-season.
He has a good track record in the championship yet hes stuck on the bench again.
I genuinely expected him to be one of the first names on the sheet this season.
I really hope that still happens.

If they change PSR rules, which they are bound to as they change all their own rules every few years, then Newcastle can be anything they want.
Financially they are the biggest club in the world by some considerable distance.
The cartel can't keep a closed shop forever.

“Saints need a new striker”

I was surprised RS didn't start yesterday. I think he should be leading the line.
I was also gutted that Downs missed the ball completely for the winner. I hope hes not another striker who misses all the sitters.

So much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
He'll be gone. We're just getting everything we can for him. Everton aren't walking away.
If the club flog him cheap everyone goes nuts. If they hold out for a high price with weeks of the window left, guess what. Everyone goes nuts....

Southampton Go Into Championship Opening Weekend In Strong Position
at 13:57 4 Aug 2025

The beauty of football is that no one knows. We might run away with it by 10 points, we might be absolutely rubbish.

I would expect us to be comfortably top 6 from the off but I'm interested to see if we have shaken off last season. Getting thrashed every week has an effect and losing became a habit.

Still seems to be highly regarded so it will be interested to see what he's got. Some strange decisions so far but I certainly don't think we can make any judgements until 10 or 12 games. We don't even know what our first 11 will look like - and nor does he.
As for players I do see both Dibling and MF leaving which gives certain fans a stick to beat the club with. We should know by now, if someone comes knocking and offers big money those players suddenly don't want to be here.
But overall I predict top 4 with a decent chance at automatics.
