Not only that, but according to Andy Zaltzman, it's the first time ever in any first class cricket.

That’s not strictly true.

The reasons for the preliminary round are two-fold.

Firstly, there are more clubs in Europe next season and as they don’t enter the Carabao Cup until round three, it has a knock on effect on the number of other clubs who can join them in that round. Basically, two more teams need to be knocked out earlier.

Also, which a lot of Oldham fans don’t seem to realise, is that the number of teams left in the competition has to change to a power of 2 at some point - 2, 4, 8, 16, 32…. With 92 teams competing in the Carabao Cup, some simple Maths has been applied to get to 32 teams in the third round.

It will only affect us if there are still as many teams playing in Europe if/when we get back to the EFL.

The reasons for the two preliminary round games comes down to Maths rather than anything else, but this wasn't communicated properly at the time the preliminary round was announced.

To be fair, we didn't, as FA Cup replays were still in place when this competition used to take place in December, albeit in a much-reduced form.

The scrapping of replays was largely as a result of expanding the in-season European competitions.

"I think we might see a few goals? There's a thing."

Here's another thing..

43 home goals scored in the league last season, the second highest total in the last 15 campaigns.

21 home goals conceded in the league last season, the lowest figure since the 2009/10 promotion campaign. (And 8 of those came in two games!)

Three 4-0 home wins last season (and all since January), equalling the club record set in 1936/37.

Back-to-back home games ending in 4-0 wins for only the fourth time in the club's history, and the first since November 2016.

The first 5-1 home win in 20 years.

Chesterfield and Bromley went up the year before with one prolific striker, not a couple.

After Grigg (25 goals), the next highest scorers for Chesterfield had 11 (Naylor & Quigley).

Bromley went up with Cheek (21 goals) followed by Olomola (10 goals).

It's all very easy to say a team need prolific strikers, but finding them is another matter. And given we've released Mitchell, you would expect McNulty to already be on the case (and he probably has been for a few months) for a replacement or two, memo or no memo.

Les Lawrence scored 22 goals for Aldershot in 1984, came to Dale that summer and was sold in November after scoring only 5 times in our colours.

Chris O'Grady joined Dale in August 2009 and scored 22 league goals in our promotion season, more than he had netted in the previous seven campaigns combined.

They had a much bigger budget than Dale when they signed a load of players in January and look how that turned out!

They probably let him go because his contract is up and they have been relegated, meaning they've had to trim their squad.

Or, perhaps his wages were outside their wage structure for playing at a lower level.

Or, maybe they want a different type of player for playing at a lower level.

Who knows? There could be many reasons.

Well, yes, although that is indirectly referenced in the fact we had 8 Tuesday night home games.

Tamworth is another one; postponed on Saturday 30th November as they were in the second round of the FA Cup, then played on Tuesday 17th December.

And also losing our New Year's Day home fixture against Altrincham to the weather/pitch.

Unfortunately, this situation isn't an exact science as there are lots of variables to take into account, as already mentioned.

The average number of Dale fans at home in 2024/25 was 2254, compared to 2392 in 2023/24, so a drop of 5.8%. (Yet 7.4% higher than in the 2021/22 season!)

We had an average of 300 away fans at Spotland in 2024/25 (354 last season), a drop of 15.5%. In our last EFL season, the average number of away fans at Spotland was 711.

In 2023/24, we played 6 Tuesday night home league games , whereas in 2024/25 we played 8, including 4 on the bounce in March.

Oldham, York and Halifax were all Saturday games in 2023/24 (aggregate crowd 13017, with 8616 Dale fans), while in 2024/25, they were all Tuesday night games aggregating 11513 (down by 11.6%), with 7572 Dale fans (down by 12.1%).

Interestingly, Oldham's average crowd at Boundary Park has dropped by about 900 compared to last season, yet Southend's went up by around 900.

The clubs won't receive tickets per se. They are sold via a tickets portal.

https://www.southendunited.co.uk/news/2025/may/23/tickets--vanarama-national-lea

The issue over allocations is ridiculous, considering the works on the underground had to be booked in at least 6 months ago when it was known there was an event at Wembley.
