 | Forum Reply | Twelve Games in what next? at 12:12 5 Oct 2025
I've got us down for 28 Points based off below. After yesterday, I'm finding it hard to pick games I think we will lose. I'm sure we will, but I don't feel comfortable predicting we will lose based on our performances so far. The two games we have lost, I wouldn't have predicted we would lose, and similarly I would have preducted a win or draw for us v Carlisle, FGR. Wow. Wonderful performance full of skill, tenacity and some smart gamesmanship. We are seeing this team evolve - they have become that little bit more ruthless. Smith had 2 chances to bury the game but we largely controlled it throughout in my view. Delightful to see Mitchell get hauled off. |

Fair point TS, Rodders in for Amantchi or Barlow perhaps from the start. Personally I thought he had a poor game at Truro but he's often a threat and pretty unstoppable when playing well. Would be a horrible sub for the oppo to have to deal with! |

Huge game, even this early in the season. Hoping for a strong crowd and an equally strong performance. Mani D is a big loss, but he was never going to play every game, and the point of having a big squad is to address these things. We didn't have him in the team in the play offs when we went 3-1 up. I'd like to see Gomez Mancini play a significant part. He and McBride are both pushing for starts, as is Burger after scoring mid-week. We'll need everyone to play to their best tomorrow, v much looking forward to what I expect will be a highly competitive game. Up the Dale! I'd go with the below: Whatmuff Gordon EEL Beckwith TAR Berkoe East Gilmour McBride Barlow Amantchi |

Agree, the ref, as is standard in this division, was terrible. A more blatant yellow when their big CM was late and struggling through the back of East, you will never see. As for the game, the atmosphere in the ground, rather than being optimistic and joyful, was nervous and angry. How a manager can achieve that when you’ve won 4/5 of your first games is remarkable and it should send strong signals to the board. The thing is, that atrocious decision at the weekend isn’t going away, because however we look at the table now, which we know will be incredibly tight at the end of the season, we know we threw points away due to Mcnulty’s ineptitude. Yes I’m still annoyed about it. For me, bigger than the c*ck up itself of the team selection, clearly insane given its unprecedented nature across the football league, is his attitude about it afterwords. If he’d just confirmed it was a mistake and that it won’t happen again, that would really help the fanbase. But he’s aloof, and doesn't come across as someone capable of learning from their mistakes. Bromley Spennmoor Southend Brackley We were lucky to scrape a win today. I’m glad we did. I thought we played well in most of the first half. Gordon in particularly I think is a great player. TAR needs to produce more consistently, and I’d say TA is also too hit and miss currently. Not sure how Mani D got MOTM, others (Pritchard, Whatmuff, Beckwith, HG) didn’t put a foot wrong. As others have said, we haven’t really played the tough teams yet this season - the real test of how good we are with be v Southend, Hartlepool, Forest Green, Carlisle and York. We need to play better against them than we have played the last 2 games to demonstrate improvement from last season despite the huge squad he has been given. That he’s won such a large % of his games as manager and the jury is still out on Mcnulty says everything. That said, I don’t want him gone as we have a terrible record of replacing managers and the squad has been built with his tactics in mind. |

You have to wonder - I mean, are they not laughing at him behind his back about this? For me, it is absolutely unforgivable to throw 3 points away like that. Play the B team in the silly cup competition, not the league, not when you’re top of it, and certainly not when it’s still August. Not only did he put 11 ‘B team’ players under huge pressure to perform together and gel as a unit with no prior games, having failed miserably he now hasto place huge additional pressure on the ‘A Team’ to perform in the next game. Is he not embarrassed? I am, and it wasn’t my decision! It’s the league, not a cup - this decision is remarkably stupid. He probably thinks it was clever. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that if a premier league manager had done that he’d probably have been fired the next day. |

What the hell was that. Truly horrendous management, something you wouldn’t even see on Football Manager. After such a superb performance mid week, I’m both embarrassed and angry about that. I feel so sorry for the travelling fans. I don’t think I’ll listen to the interview. |

I think if we'd had Mitchell up top yesterday it would have ended 0-0. It's the sort of game of which we dropped points regularly last season and I am happy to see yesterday's increased clinicality as a marked improvement. Yes I think we can do better to stop chances but if we continue to be that deadly it won't matter. I think Mani has the potential to be one of the best players in this division and arguably the one above, looking an excellent signing and upgrade. |

Interesting how many of these goals were live tv games! I guess the occasion helped. Jonah v Southampton a great shout, I loved the JT headed goal against them at home, we were in dream land. One of my personal favourites that hasn’t yet been mentioned was Paul Connor’s goal v Coventry in the FA Cup. We hadn’t had a game of that size for a while as I recall and Cov were a much better side than us. He also scored one of the best goals I’ve seen for Dale against Carlisle in a 6-0 win. The most I’ve ever celebrated a Dale goal besides those mentioned above, oddly was when we equalised at Wolves in the Fifth Round of the same FA Cup run, Gavin Melaugh(?) getting a toe end on a Simmo shot. Matched by the Rushden OG in the playoff semi final! The best individual goal I have seen for the Dale, and my personal favourite, was Paddy away at Halifax. On a bobbly pitch. The man was the most talented player I’ve ever seen for the Dale, Lambert, Holt, Tom Heaton, Hahnemmann included. All anyone in the crowd wanted whenever he played was for the other players to give the ball to him. Don’t recall that ever happening much with other players. That he went on to score similar wonder goals for Celtic showed he was supremely talented, despite rumours about lack of professionalism. Honourable mention for Kevin Townson at home to Fulham who were a Prem team and had some class players in that game. |

I like that we are building a mgmt/coaching team that understands and has close connections to the club and within that, players who have previously had success here (and elsewhere) and who have played for the club in L1, meaning they are aware of the club's history and what the club is capable of achieving. |

Have to agree TS that the smirk is irritating after defeats like last night, someone with a better grasp of psychology than me may be able to explain it. Reminds me of the Boris Johnson smirk when he lies. This thread is academic - McNulty will absolutely be the manager next season, so we need to get used to that. Ultimately I'm in the camp of keeping him, I know it probably sounds somewhat entitled to outside observers but for all the reasons stated there is a nuance to this. The relevant question is how do we measure whether he should stay after *next* season? I think the answer has to be that we need to see obvious improvement from this year - dropping far fewer points from winning positions, signing players that give us more steel and leadership, and a better points tally and/or league position. Far fewer truly awful performances too. The goal should be promotion next year - that means finishing first - no excuses. We're historically a football league club, we should be acting like it and get some arrogance about us like other teams do. I can put up with the banal interviews if he meets those criteria. Even if he uses the word clout. |

The entire ethos of the club is so ‘nice’ - epitomised by the saccharine social media output and the insipid, obsequious post match ‘interviews’. Sadly, being nice doesn’t win you anything. Jim talks about overachievement - I think we were around par taking into account our average attendances and budget. Sorry, our respective ‘clout’. Great to see Hilly there last night, before his regretful demise that man knew how to win - no fear. |

Not sure I agree with that 58. Has their keeper been made to make a save? |
 | Forum Reply | Braintree Match Thread at 16:22 5 May 2025
As we know, we are capable of producing some real shockers, in amongst the good performances. So far, this is falling into the shocker category. Arguably more excusable given the rotations in team, but the lack of ability to create chances against teams where they sit back is a running theme. We play some pretty stuff but produce next to no shots on goal. Be interesting to hear the gaffer's thoughts on how he plans to remedy this. Thought the keeper should have been much braver for the first, and Kingdon clearly at fault for the second - that attempted flick was inexcusable. |

Money talks though (Mullin). If they give him a great offer, if he has a good season again his value will skyrocket and the option of a bigger move is always there. If we sign him we should be pushing for top 2 in any case so his move to the EFL might only be a year delayed (who am I kidding with my blind optimism!). Worth remembering that the board pushed the boat out to sign COG at the time (2009?) because they knew he was our best chance to get promotion. It worked wonders, became a Dale legend. This guy could do the same. |

Took his second really well, confidently smashed it in - sign of a striker in great form. He's much more effective down the middle of the pitch. |
