A display which would have looked better away from home . Flanagan continued to go forward in possession in the first half but nobody made any runs for width or space which led it reoccurring to often from the back till half time.
Mix and match after the hour, but Lisbies enthusiasm and a diagonal ball from Read wide injected more life thereafter . |

4 August 2008, the first football match to be played at the newly built ColchesterCommunityStadium got underway.
It was a friendly between #ColchesterUnited and #AthleticBilbao and Bilbao won 2-1. |

Saw the last ten overs, decent chase in, looked like some dark arts with four overs to go with MacGregor slowing the game down, going walk about and talking to the umpire about something in the deep. Well supported by Wheeler . |

First game and home match of the new season . U’s start with 4-4-2 with Goodwin and Williams new pairing leading the line.
Rovers pressed hard throughout first half and denied space . U’s fail to clear corner and unmarked player knocks ball across area to be shot home at the far post .
U’s to slow and ponderous and cannot break down uptill half time, but Wilcox had half chance volley from outside the box that if on target would had level the sides just before break.
Second half ball was knocked over defence more often has wide men failed to get into game .
All change on the hour with introduction of Read for Bishop being the key, while Lisbie replaced forward Williams .
U’s look more fluent from then on but still fail to work the visiting keeper .
Just before 90 Tucker feeds a ball to Lisbie in the area which first touch gives him a turn and rifles ball into top corner . A sublime finish his Dad would have be proud of.
Draw a fair result has failed to make an impression until 70th min .
Breaking teams down will be the key the earlier the better to open up the play, made hard work in doing so today . |

Starting this season, Colchester United will be replacing the traditional printed matchday programme with a new, free electronic PDF version, available exclusively to ticket holders.
Should be one available if went back to purchasing it, has their are collectors and groundhoppers who still use has a momento of the visit .
Personally save one start of every season, but the U’s review magazine had the same front cover which became unexciting.
Looking through old issues it brings back memories in relating to seasons with the different sizes and designs. [Post edited 2 Aug 10:06]

Saw Wanstead’s innings on the excellent stream .
Simon Fernandes looked excellent standing up, Wheeler and Gladwell bowled to many four balls, any thought of ColEE getting back into the game were cancelled by Das ably assisting Hameed seeing the chase comfortably.
Next time the big guy umpires Noah, ask him to stand at the opposite end, has standing up at the wicket you could not see the stumps though his other umpire could just see over them ! |

A true football man, one that clubs cannot do without, a man of all trades.
I did not know him personally, but bumped into him while he was out walking the family dog. Had a great chat with him about footie, a true gentleman . Condolences to his family . |
