 | Forum Thread | Just back - Watford reflections at 19:25 16 Aug 2025
Mbengue was not good at left back. Cook has lost some pace and with that some confidence. A couple times he overcommitted early because, I guess, he didn't think he'd be able to recover. Unlike last week, Field played deep and Madsen further forward. Even so, Sammy arrived on two good chances...and put them both wide. A theme. Madsen effete, as so often. Burrell promising and physical. Some games Dembele just gets bullied by the big boys. Needs to learn how to con fouls from Smyth the master. Ref was annoying and a bit of a homer, but of course we've known worse and it didn't affect the result. We looked pretty good for the 20 minutes we had a balanced 11 (i.e., once Esquerdinha and Varane came on, and before Celar came one). What a hit from Kieran. Chair worked really hard. Would love to see his heat map. We'll be ok if we can get anything like our first 11 playing regularly. [Post edited 16 Aug 19:26]

Who’s going to play right back? Morgan and Dunne apparently injured. Adamson and Putnam not ready. Mbengue shifting right with Cook in the middle? Who’s going to play left back? Is Esquerdinha ahead of Vale after the last two games? Who’s going to replace Poku? Vale if not at left back? Is Smyth ready? Can Burrell play wide? Can Kolli play again? |

I always had a hunch that the really smart ones, perhaps like Brighton, might learn what metrics their market is looking for, and then play players in such away that they stand out as obvious buys. Gaming the system in a way. E.g., I know Chelsea are big spenders, and I know they look for <24yo, progressive carries, sprints, passes into final third and pass completion over 80%, but don't really look at interceptions or aerial duels. So I'm going to coach my 22 year old midfielder to play in a way that maximises those stats, and create a team structure that lets him do so. Right, that'll be £100m thanks. But there's always interpretation. Is it good or bad if goals scored is above XG? Are they clinical or lucky? If goals scored are below XG is that good or bad? Do they lack composure, or have they been unlucky and will revert to mean? |

I've always just taken the met line, but I see there's a southern rail train from Shepherd's Bush at 13:55 which should get me to the ground by 14:45. Anyone advise against that? |

There’s a paradox in the ‘conservative’ mind. 1. Everyone should make their own way and is responsible for improving their lot, pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps (think about it: physically impossible), and not rely on handouts from the nanny state. And yet 2. People who are doing exactly that, who happen to be born in another country, are hated, and the state is expected to protect against these upstart self-starters competing for work and services. Obviously it’s human to be illogical and to concurrently hold contradictory thoughts. But it can also be human to be empathetic, to have the imagination to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. Or to withhold judgement of someone whose story you don’t really know. |

I find the story quite inspiring. It appears he’s been through some tough times, times that might break lots of people, but he’s found a way, found support from people, and appears driven to make his life better for himself and his family. Good luck to him regardless of whether he signs for QPR. |

Prefer Morgan at right back to not having Field in midfield. |

Thinking about it, I'd me more comfortable if it was a 3511 Mbengue Morrison Esquerdinha Chair Morgan Field Madsen Poku Dembele Celar |

Oh shit. That central midfield. They’re just going to skip through it. |

Yes. Get Lowe, Nectaris Triantis, and Kone in before Saito. That’s imagining we have some cash to spend. The toughest years have rolled out of the cycle and so far I’d guess we’re a bit leaner Kelman and Lloyd > Burrell. Yang and Saito > Poku Paal > Larkeche Edwards and Fox > Mbengue Anderson > Pearman Ashby > Adamson Colback > ? |

Just posted the same on the other thread. Hope we're both wrong. |

Ok, time for my best guess of what Julien will pick from what's available (and he'll need to discover some of the things we think we already know). Walsh Adamson Cook Morrison Larkeche Chair Field Madsen Poku Celar Dembele On 55 mins when things aren't how we want them and we're being slaughtered on both sides he'll bring on Mbengue for Adamson, Kolli for Celar, Vale or Morgan for Madsen. A little later he'll bring on Burrell for Dembele. If it was me, even though I've never seen some of these guys play, I'd go Nardi Mbengue Cook Morrison Larkeche Chair Field Vale Poku Kolli Dembele |

Even if its not a priority position, I'm not actually against bringing Saito back, so long as it confirms that Ilias is now a midfielder - which is where I've long thought he would be best. He can receive on the half turn, protect the ball, work hard, carry forward in a way none of the others can. |

Tragically I'm watching Rapid Vienna vs Dundee. Wish the Australian we'd got was Zac Sapsford. Great assist and good goal in tonight's game. 2 goals and 2 assists in his first 4 games. Looks decent. |

He is already a legend. And considering he's a legend, I'm a bit worried I don't know how to pronounce his name properly. Should it in fact be Shay-ear? I also feel ashamed I used to talk about Easy, and it was only once he left us that I came to realise I should have been calling him Ezza. |

We paid a fee for Friel. I expect they were hoping he’d be training with the first team by now. And Petrie made the bench last season but not getting a chance to impress the new manager either. |
