After last week’s horror show the U’s are back on home territory for a difficult encounter against the Gas. Everything last week was set up nicely for a U’s win. Accrington bottom of the league and inconsistent results. The U’s getting back to a settled team despite numerous injuries as identified by RS in an earlier post. The facilities in the 1958 lounge were superb. We sat with three local supporters who made us very welcome. Indeed, everyone welcomed us from the car park attendant to the MC and the Club Chairman. As it was a lunchtime kick off, we had a pre match bacon sandwich and drink before taking our seats in the main stand. Strangely the U’s faithful 202 including the three of us were quiet from before kick off I had predicted a healthy 3-0 U’s win, and we got off to the worse possible start. Outplayed, outmuscled and out fought throughout the entire first half we could have been 3-0 down before Lisbie missed a gilt-edged chance to equalise on half time. I have never known such a poor half of football with the U’s second best in every department. The second half saw a slight improvement but in fairness it couldn’t have been any worse. The end of the game was greeted with silence from the faithful perhaps failing to fully comprehend just what a poor game they had witnessed. We returned to the 1958 lounge, and I learned that my crowd attendance estimate was only two out. I won a Bottle of 18-year-old Irish whiskey, and we then settled down to a two-course lunch of braised beef with mash and vegetables followed by a selection of three desserts. The food was superb and the people friendly. We enjoyed a leisurely drink with our lunch before heading home. I was obviously disappointed with the scoreline, but the rest of the day was memorable despite the 90 minutes of abject misery. Today Darrell Clarke is in town with the Gas, and it will be a difficult match. Time to roll up the sleeves and get back to some form after the disappointing results we have experienced recently. Will Matt Macey be fit, otherwise I reckon I have the starting XI. Smith KVY Tucker Araujo Powell Bishop Payne Read Gordon Lisbie Tovide Subs Chamberlain Gape Williams MBick Hunt Baldwin Anderson Weather will be 22 degrees Celsius and sunny intervals. I reckon a narrow 1-0 home victory with Lisbie on the scoresheet. Enjoy the game. Up the U’s |

Wessex as you know I am the eternal optimist. Equally Paddy is always a threat. I was at that Hillsborough game in 2004 and the score line was predicted by me. However I'm not a betting man or I could have got 360-1 (incredible but true). I feel that we are overdue converting those chances into goals and tomorrow could do it. up the U's |

On Saturday I am heading to the Wham Stadium for the Accrington Stanley game. My son and daughter in law are treating me to the Hospitality package in the 1968 Lounge. Now I have been to the stadium several times including the last three games and I reckon the opportunity to enjoy bacon sandwiches, a meal, and the facilities will enhance the matchday experience (providing we win of course). The early start (1230 ko) means the meal will follow the game. And after some disappointing results, not least the Crewe game which we should have won I hope that we can transform our striking options and secure a vital three points in Accrington. John Doolan will be equally keen to secure a home win as will evergreen Paddy Madden. I am hoping for a three nil Colchester victory, and I truly hope that DC will make a bold selection for his starting XI. Team 4,3,3: Macey KVY Araujo Tucker Powell Bishop Payne Read Edwards Williams Lisbie Subs: Akande Gordon Tovide Smith Gape Baldwin Mbick Drop Hunt (Anderson could be injured) to add to the other injuries Goodwin, Iandolo, Perry, Flanagan and Milton Oni (due back soon). There is no point in waiting for the last 30 minutes before making the subs who undoubtedly change the game but by starting boldly we can avoid the early goal being conceded and this forcing us to chase the game. Weather will include 15 degrees Celsius thundery showers, sunny intervals Safe journey to the travelling faithful. Enjoy the game. Up the U’s |

I'm sorry but Hunt and Anderson are simply not good enough yet they both start. Anderson not creative and Hunt cost us the goal. Get them both off. Plenty of options on the bench. Must make changes early. |

Here's one slightly off left field. Omari Patrick now plays for Tranmere and is scoring goals for fun. Let's spend some money and offer £350K for his services but up to £500K. Powerful big strong striker. Reminiscent of Trevor Lee. If we are serious about promotion then get it done. And before people say we don't have the money we do. We have sold six players all in excess of those type of financial receipts in the past three years That would be a statement of intent. Also Tranmere can't afford to turn down that sort of money. Time for my medication before bed. Up the U's |

An undeserved defeat to Cambridge on Tuesday night. DC described as them as one the best footballing teams in the league. Well, if that is truly the case then we don’t have much to worry about when considering promotion this season. Cambridge were outplayed for long periods of the game. We managed to undo all our good work in a two-minute spell just before half time. They took their limited opportunities, we didn’t, simples. Today Barrow are in Town and we must be looking to get back to winning ways. I predict a 3-0 home win with the outstanding Lisbie on the scoresheet. Take the game to Andy Whing’s side and score early. We can put right the mistakes that were made on Tuesday night. The recent serious ACL injury to Ben Perry has been a real loss to the team and adds to injuries to Ellis Iandolo and Goodwin plus long-term injury to Milton Oni. DC still hasn’t worked out his best team. Anderson I understand is fit which fills me with trepidation. He is so overrated by DC which I simply do not understand. Go with the following this Saturday: Macey KVY Flanagan Tucker Powell Edwards Bishop Payne Read Tovide Lisbie Subs Akande Thorn Gordon Hunt Smith Williams Gape Few people have been commenting on our pitch. It looks superb and is playing brilliantly. Full marks to the management for allowing valuable cash injections from the Farmers to finance the close season work which was well documented on the Colchester sites. Perhaps we are having problems readjusting to such a true surface. This will only enhance the football and our team over the course of almost 30 games at the JCS this season. After Chris’ departure after 13 years of sterling work to the club, Michael has proven to be a real asset too. His efficiency in sourcing the new shirts has been brilliant. Weather today will be 19 degrees some cloud and sunny intervals and dry. Another decent crowd today and three points what’s not to like. Enjoy the game. Up the U’s |
