What have learned ?
at 12:04 3 Aug 2025

What did we learn?
Most of it has been said, but, a word for Dembele. He may not have much of an impact when required to defend, but, as an attacker, he looked as good as anything Brentford had to offer.

Nice.
Now just put the shirt on and play like the team of 1975/76.

All the attention to the cost of a PA system?

That's how it goes when there are big - but difficult - things to get to grips with.
Councils fall into the trap of spending ages discussing the office car parking but then struggle with strategic issues on the same agenda. Government? They fill their time with debating relatively minor savings (Winter Fuel Allowance?} and find themselves unable to face up to the big stuff (£110 billion p.a. in interest on debt?).

Focusing on something like the PA system is pretty normal. We need not be too red-faced.

By the way, £1 million did sound a lot.

Sheffield Wednesday

I have two good friends who are lifelong Wednesday supporters and I have been to matches at Hillsborough. They are deeply worried and for good reason.
But, despite the financial chaos, loss of the manager and important players and the painful uncertainty, some people are keeping that club going. They have been playing pre-season friendlies, for example. That dedication suggests a glimmer of hope - that there may be some sort of future when the current owner's mess has been cleaned up.
We should all wish them well.

SC HEERENVEEN friendly...
at 17:56 26 Jul 2025

Hope I don't sound excessively positive, but, I found that quite an enjoyable game to watch (on the computer screen). The QPR goals were good and it must have been a good work-out.

A concern? I lost count of the number of times when we were attacking and were well into their half when I said to myself 'It's going to be back with Joe Walsh pretty soon'. Sure enough, from somewhere near their penalty area ffs, a series of passes sent the ball back to our goalkeeper. Granted, Walsh did set up Daniel Bennie with an excellent long ball, but, 'passing out from the back' became simply 'passing back' - a little too often, for my taste.

Cardiff Friendly
at 09:04 24 Jul 2025

My thoughts went from the performance against Cardiff to the first game of the season. Can't help feeling that it is more important than usual this year. Will the new manager, displaying many of the characteristics and ideas of the previous one, sense that too? I reckon so. I would like to see an attacking performance that sweeps PNE away, but, I am inclined to think that it will be a cautious approach, to avoid defeat - with the team performing in the same inconsistent fashion as under Marti. I would love to be wrong about that.

At times, on here, we make very strange judgements about the QPR players.

That 0-5 defeat by Burnley - I know that it should not have been but, was it a morale issue? Morale affected by rumours about the boss?

World Club Cup Final

Can we not learn something from that match? Not the awful ballyhoo (please, no more of that), but the way that Maresca's tactics enabled his team to beat a superior (on paper) outfit. For those that don't like passing out from the back, or, at very least, don't like tippy tappy stuff, here was a team that won a match by blending possession and aggression with long balls out of defence that took apart the winners of the Champions League. Could we do that in the Championship?

Interesting!

In my case, Sainsbury's opened their first shop and the Cutty Sark was launched.

"The vast majority of Championship teams haven't got the quality to pass out from the back."
But, most teams are able to play short passes more accurately than long ones. Trouble is, if you are planning to play a long ball from the back, you need a) defenders that can play a long ball accurately and b) another type of skill further up the pitch - the ability to win a (usually) high ball and, under pressure, hold on to it. The players with that ability seem to be rare.

10 am Kick-Off in Spain
at 08:05 12 Jul 2025

Saturday 12th July: CD Castellón v QPR, 10am KO (BST), behind closed doors

Sorry if this has been covered already, but, has everyone latched on to the fact that today's friendly is kicking off an hour early - at 10.00 (UK time)?

Reason - dodgy weather later today in that corner of Spain.
