One last thing and then I promise I’ll shut up and go away .

I thought Cook was pretty good last night , but is it an illusion , or are we just noticeably slower with the ball when building from the back when he is in the team ?

His passes across to Mbengue had no zip or purpose to them . Mbengue has to keep waiting for the ball to arrive before moving forward .
It dictates the tempo of how we move forward as a team a lot of the time .

The cross on the half volley on the other hand deserved more than it got .

Great post Brian along with another load of interesting and considered posts .
We shouldn’t be too down as it’s 5 unbeaten after all .
I think the quality of the performances in the last 2 games is a concern and it’s ok to pick apart what we all think isn’t quite clicking .
No one going overboard and rightly so .

Regarding Sam Field, I wasn’t picking on him in particular, just used him as an example.

Relating to what you were saying Brian, regarding the press , in that first half there was constant arguing between Field and Frey about who should be dropping into the hole just behind our front 2 when Oxford had the ball . Their way out was play the ball into Brannigan in that little space and they were out . Field was going mad at Frey to drop in and Frey was demanding Field push on ….neither really did anything about it and that’s a worry .
Yes, the coaching staff need to see it and sort it out, but the players on the pitch have to take some responsibility and sort it between them.
Too often in the modern game players want to be lead by the hand instead of taking hold of the situation. Only relatively minor issue but something I noticed .

tonight's ref

He think he got tired and completely unravelled with about 20 mins to go like most refs in this league. Lost control of a game that want in any danger of getting out of control .

Ha ha !!
It’s difficult because I don’t want to be negative or pessimistic. I nearly didn’t post that because of that reason, as I knew some would think I was . Totally understandable .
But that was just my gut feeling .

Also know that to a degree JS is damned if he changes it up and damned if he doesn’t and there are injuries due to players being overworked etc.

I just think sometimes managers and head coaches and staff in generall over think situations .
Just put your best team out and try to win the game and worry about the next game tomorrow .

My fear when the team was announced that it was too many changes . I expected changes but not that many . So as well as players in an unfamiliar line up , some not played for weeks , some not match fit in regards to being slightly rusty , the personnel was all wrong . It looked a bad mix of the squad and it proved to be so.

I know that Kone was great for 2 or 3 games but now the adrenaline has settled , I think we are now seeing the real Kone. That’s not a criticism.
He is making a big step up and he has an awful lot to learn . He has potential to be a very good player but it will take time .
He isn’t the world beater some were suggesting , not yet anyway .
To add to that , playing Frey alongside him can’t be something we try to do regularly.
They are both too similar .
I thought the decision to leave Morrison out was odd.
Easy in hindsight , but I said before the game that if Mbengue gets booked (which of course he did) it puts an awful lot of pressure on Cook who is managing a nasty injury, to all of a sudden play 2 games in 4 days .
Poor choices in my opinion .

The midfield is another puzzle that needs more work solving .

Stéphan doesn’t seem that enamoured with Varane and you can see why at times .
But….Madsen works much better with Varane rather than Hayden .
Strange goings on with Madsens entrance that Hayden decided to just confine himself to the centre circle and let Madsen charge around . They were miles apart and it meant Madsen couldn’t get on the ball . He improved ten fold when Varane came on as Varane played much closer to Madsen and gave him support .
Field …I just don’t know .
Saw Field doing exactly what some have criticised Madsen for recently ..and that’s stand next to an opponent and point at other R’s players to where the ball should be played . How many times did Jimmy have the ball in the first half and was demanding his midfield 2 show for him …but nothing .

Not many did themselves a great deal of good tonight , but not really too much blame on the players . A bit of course . Oxford were utter guff and we should have enough quality to expect someone to create something .
But they weren’t helped by the odd team selection and set up .
Way too narrow . Way too one dimensional and maybe most worrying of all way too sulky and argumentative with each other tonight .

Let’s hope the head coach and the players learned a lot from tonight .
The main one being not to panic about a ‘3 game week’ and just win the game you are playing . Worry about Saturday after the game tonight . I think the coaching staff had 1 eye on Saturday and in my opinion that’s not right . Play the strongest team because momentum has now been lost .
Not so much in results but certainly how we are playing .

I dunno , might be a master stroke and we could stuff them out of sight .

But I can’t help but think that we should be worrying about the game Saturday , after tonight .
Old fashioned view probably . But that’s just the way I see it .
Lose tonight then there is even more pressure to get it right on Saturday .

Taking Morrison out scares me a bit

Too many changes? Time will tell but it has that ‘it’s only Oxford’ feel about it like it’s a cup tie or something.
Going to be difficult to gel for a lot of the team .
The attitude has to be right from the off tonight or this could go wrong .

Still, on paper we should still win the game .
At it from the start and we should be ok

To come off so soon into his first game back , after that length of a lay off just can’t be ‘precautionary’.
I don’t know why he’s come off so should reserve judgement up to a point .
But we are not likely to find out so I will have to make my own mind up .
Through my own experience I know you have to play through some discomfort as the body , muscles and tissues start adapting to the physicality of a real game . You get pain and discomfort all over the place . But 11 minutes is nothing , which suggests he’s got another serious problem , maybe the same problem , or a fresh injury .

Whatever it is , I do feel for him. He must be distraught .

But in the flip side , we ain’t a charity either .
He’ll be on a big wage and is useless if he can’t get himself on the pitch at all .

Great report . I saw Dembele’s performance pretty similar. I thought he looked sharp and made a difference .

Interactive ratings yesterday
at 16:11 28 Sep 2025

I never score the opposition in the ratings as I feel I just don’t watch them close enough unless someone really stands out .

One player I actually was impressed with yesterday was on loan Harry Amass. Neat and tidy, direct and confident , in a tough situation . He played well ….or at least I thought so .
Fans on here scoring him an AVERAGE of 2 .2 tells me others don’t watch the opposition close enough either or I’ve lost the plot completely 🤣🤣🤣.

As for our team, ratings look about right give or take…

OP and a little of what has followed on this thread is a pretty blinkered and slightly juvenile view of a player who has hardly kicked a ball since April .
We would almost certainly have been relegated without his goals last season so let’s get off his back shall we .
He was poor yesterday but was played in a strange roll that he clearly didn’t feel comfortable in.
We all know his limitations , but most people can see that he is an important squad player.

We also saw yesterday that Kone isn’t always going to be the reincarnation of Les , so Frey is going to have to get to grips with that new role , but in doing so becomes integral to how we play along with Kone .
He may well start Wednesday , just through rotating the squad so get behind him .

Madsen on today's draw
at 09:20 28 Sep 2025

Yeah honest and intelligent interview.
These little things after the games all add to him growing bit by bit .
No one is pretending he is prime Ya Ya Toure in there but he is proving an important cog in the wheel and good on him for turning it round.
In my opinion it’s difficult to really look at anybody else for their goal other than Nardi (although I haven’t seen it back since) .
So strange that he’s decided to come for that cross rather than the dozens put underneath his crossbar over the last year that he chose to leave .
Just proves it’s a bit of mental block that he has .

Still more comfortable with him rather than Walsh but that argument is irrelevant with Walsh injured anyway .
I think our defence is more comfortable too and I think that’s most important of all .

People saying the subs didn’t make sense but they did for 15 mins after the break .

We could and should have wrapped the game up there and then but we were wasteful.
Thought Kone was prett bad today (admittedly my stream was crap so may have missed good moments ). In hindsight , Frey for Kone instead of Burrell was the better option if you are going to bring Frey on.
He was pretty poor overall though himself wasn’t he .

Agree with Baz, RND was probably the best of an average bunch. He’ll have ‘nothing special’ on his headstone but was very solid I thought .
Madsen ok too without really doing anything amazing .
JS likes taking Varane off doesn’t he ?
More to read into that perhaps ?

Overall I thought the front 4 just didn’t click today . You could see at times what they were trying to do , but that happens sometimes .

Sheffield Wednesday wanted to stidge the game up and they did .

Looking forward to the game in the week .

Putrid game of football .

Missed a few big chances but we played so poorly I’ll take a draw.

Didn’t click today really at any point . On to Wednesday

Our performance matches the quality of the streams this afternoon.
Both awful and making me annoyed.
As someone else said, we let them, once again dictate the match and force us down to their level.

We need someone to grab hold of this game quickly.

Not seen a great deal of Coventry this season , but teams are just giving them goals.
They haven’t done anything special for any of their goals this season (not seen all admittedly).
