You are at least partly correct Ifonly. In my opinion we need also to consider two other events, the first sudden and the latter long term:- 1. The Global Financial crash of 2008 when debt was sold by ever more greedy banks and other financial institutions ( yes, it is possible to sell debt ) to people who obviously couldn’t afford it. 2. The long term decline in birth rates in the Western World, an example of which are the UK figures for 2024 which show a fertility rate of 1.41 per female, the lowest ever recorded. The accepted figure required to maintain even a stable population being 2.1. The result of 1. is that people are unhappy as unlike the period 1945 to 2008 their living standards are perceived as not improving year on year. The result of 2. is an increasing reliance on immigration to service the requirements ( Hospitals and Social Care in particular ) of older people. Having said the above I’m a little puzzled as to why you refer to people such as myself as an older fvcker as it’s not as though we had any control over the examples I suggest is it ? |

Yep, and it’s suggested that last time there was a protest a member of the Metropolitan Police arrested a man who’s tee shirt actually said “ I support plasticine action “ and another a blind man in a wheelchair. Should make interesting court cases if and when they finally get in front of the beak. [Post edited 6 Sep 23:28]

No, keep them in. Given Saints two relegations in three years and the constant pathetic control of our club by Sports Republic it’s a refreshing change to be able to think and comment about something else. |

Doesn’t add up financially though Southamptonfan does it. Wait six months and keep your job and all the salary and perks that go with it until the next general election which is probably three years away or buy the flat now and loose your job and perks for the sake of £40,000. I’m happy to run with what she has done as a silly mistake and you appear happy that it’s been done intentionally. The only person who really knows is the woman herself. On Saints and footballing matters in general I’ve noticed that our views are usually very similar, on this one it looks like we are simply going to have to agree to disagree. |

I would prefer it if for once the defence kept a clean sheet. |

Interesting enough it now appears that had she waited six months before buying her flat in Hove her disabled son would have reached 18 years of age, at which point under the rules of his trust her interest in his home would have passed to him in its entirety. Thereafter she could have purchased the flat ( or similar ) and the Stamp Duty she has paid would cause no problem whatsoever. Silly mistake but then again we have all made them. |

jopreston, do you honestly think that all 650 members of Parliament are purely in it for what they can make from it ? A salary of £94000 to have to deal with with complaints of thousands of moaning constituents day in and day out whilst constantly being open to written, verbal and in some cases physical abuse resulting in death is why they want to do it ? Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion, after all we still live in a democracy which without Parliament and those within it probably wouldn’t exist. Now there is an irony. |

I see where you are coming from Chesham Saint. However, according to the B B C Website today, she took the advice of an expert in Conveyancing and two legal experts regarding Trusts before proceeding with the purchase and subsequent payment of Stamp Duty. Who amongst us ( Deputy Prime Minister or Road Sweeper) placed in a similar position having received expert advice from three different sources would then decide to ignore such advice ? To me the whole affair hinges on the content of your penultimate paragraph. If she knowingly withheld information from those she asked for advice so as to benefit financially then she is toast, if not, then I find it hard to see what she has done wrong. Particularly given that she took the trouble to apply to a court to make details of the trust public and then on the advice of a K C immediately agreed to pay HMRC what he considered was still owed. As a side issue and correct me if I’m wrong, but some media messaging appears to suggest she paid no Stamp Duty. Isn’t the reality that Stamp Duty was in fact paid but simply at the incorrect rate ? |

Given that both clubs and Hampshire Plod have put a great deal of time and effort into segregation I don’t imagine for a moment that there will be any chance of welcoming the bubble coaches. More likely every opportunity for those attempting to do so getting themselves arrested by over zealous inexperienced cops under the provisions of a public order offence of some sort or another. Much better just to stay away from any potential trouble and avoid having years of answering “ Yes” to the question have you any convictions for criminal offences ? on requests for finance/car/house insurance, job applications etc etc. |

Thanks Heisenberg for saving me the trouble of needing to provide some clarity to the situation for those who perhaps base their judgment simply on the headlines in the likes of the Daily Fail and the Torygraph. My understanding of her statement is that her affairs are complicated by the existence of a previous divorce and the provision of a house held in trust for the ongoing use of one of her and her then husbands disabled children. Before giving public access to details of the trust she had to apply to a court to be able to do so. I imagine that course of action is standard practice to protect the interests of the child to which the trust applies. It appears that it is around the definition of legal ownership of the house held in trust that the problem has arisen. She contends that she sought and obtained legal advice concerning the ownership of the trust house which may subsequently have been inaccurate, hence the incorrect amount of stamp duty was imposed in the purchase of the Hove Flat. From what I’ve read it’s not been suggested that no stamp duty whatsoever was charged. It is further suggested that the amount owing to the Revenue is in the sum of Forty Thousand Pounds which she has now agreed to pay. For those wishing to find her guilty, by all means do so that’s your privilege, but it’s probably best to consider all the facts before doing so. |

Yep, and as Southamptonfan points out under a separate article Sports Republic have banked £72 million in the process, apparently not including parachute payments. Their prerogative of course, which to me appears to indicate that promotion isn’t very high on the agenda. |

£80 odd million for Dibling and Fernandes and we once again end up without a proper Centre Forward. There is absolutely no chance whatsoever that Downs,Stewart,Archer and Armstrong will score enough goals to get us promoted back to The Premier League. Downs looks completely out of his depth. Stewart is constantly injured. Archer is a journeyman footballer with nothing more than an average goal scoring record. Armstrong is a shadow of the player he was a couple of seasons ago. Thanks very much yet again Sports Republic. |

“ I can not think of a larger team that has won so little”. That’s because there isn’t one. Most of our so called fans are just increasingly happy to have a day out at the St Mary’s Fun Fair. What happens on the pitch is nowadays just a distraction from their food in hospitality, the “ fun” in the fan zones or darts in the Dell Pub. |

I suspect both. Thing is, if he goes to Bristol City he will probably score a hat full of goals and get them promoted. It’s the Sports Republic’s way :- Buying average players and making them worse when they play for us. |

With you 100% cocklebreath. The first goal yesterday was a carbon copy of Stoke’s second at St Mary’s last Saturday except that this time he was beaten by a shot from his left.Last week he got done in the same fashion from his right. Put simply, and as you correctly say, he once again got his angles wrong. For their second the T V showing the view of goal given to the free kick taker identifies that his positioning was completely wrong. He gave the taker two thirds of the goal to aim at and as long as he could get the ball passed the wall a goal was inevitable. Yes, it was a good free kick but in truth a poor one would have beaten him given where he was standing. In a way I feel sorry for him in that he’s doing his best, but as in some other jobs he’s a person promoted beyond his abilities. The difference is that they don’t have thousands of people watching them struggle in real time and even more on T V. |

It may be for you grumpy. It certainly won’t be for me. With the money the club has from parachute payments and transfers, nothing short of automatic promotion this season will be acceptable. We are a club with a long top flight history, a decent stadium, plenty of money and some very supportive fans, hence there are no excuses for failure any longer. It’s now solely down to Sports Republic to get the job done. |
