How did Madsen play yesterday?
at 15:05 20 Sep 2025

Madsen was great today, his best all around game for sure. This system suits him but he's also doing all the championship midfield stuff we hadn't seen. Love it, keep it up!

I didn't see if it won but pleased if it did - feels like a proper under the radar film.

On those same lines, the guy that played the dickhead policeman (not Roy from the office) was in another underrated film I watched this week - Shot Caller. It's the guy from Game of Thrones and John Bernthal, among others. A really good prison related drama I heard almost nothing about before. Solid performances and the story goes back and forth and is really well told. It's free to watch with Amazon Prime

He can keep doing it, for more than 5 games. Seen loads of social media stuff like this in response to this graphic, like it was my imagination watching him try to hide in his own shirt for the last 12 months.

Before we all start this revisionist wánkathon, let's not forget he's only 4 games away from a disgraceful performance at Watford, which we've seen a lot more of than the recent showings. I'm also not especially surprised that he's looking better just as we've started to bypass midfield more and put 4 decent attackers ahead of him - people that actually make proper runs and want the ball...

If he's turned the corner and we've found a way to get the best out of him that's superb, because he was a sizeable investment and he seems a very decent lad all things considered, but it'll take more than this as a sample size before I'll hear the I told you so's

Was sad to see the empty chair next to him - could only imagine the Sints scream for that Kone belter, or the love for that Burrell chase and finish. Get well soon, Sints

I love seeing teams that know they aren't going to be that good so decide to just sling it. Th Giants and Cowboys will be similar - really fun to watch because they have to try and outscore everyone.

Superdome will be fun! I went to a Saints game at Tottenham 2 years ago and the NO fans were the best.

Walsh/Nardi 🙌
at 14:55 16 Sep 2025

I get that the archetype / preferred keeper is 6ft 4, etc, and Cooper is shy of that, but he's had multiple seasons with rave reviews in League 1 which is a physical, often direct and cross-heavy league, if he can excel there I don't see him having an issue in the Championship.

It would make sense to me to recall him, give him games, and get Walsh going the other way for 6 months of regular game time.

In the meantime I'm grateful we have Nardi to come in, if we had sold or loaned him we'd be struggling.

Watched/rewatched a few under the radar films recently.

Dangerous Animals - a mini horror-style film about a guy feeding people to sharks. Jai Courtney is great

Rebel Ridge - this one is on Netflix and it's my 2nd watch. Low key cast and gets you straight away. Like a Rambo-esque plot about a man taking action against corrupt local police. I don't know how the main guy isn't in more - and he's from London which I discovered after. Strong recommend.

My Washington won in 3rd gear against a pretty woeful Giants team, and a solid weekend of action culminating in that crazy 41-40 comeback win for the Bills. Absolute scenes.

Great to have it back!

Very conveniently side stepped that presentation of multiple reasoning, along with the experience counter from Hunter, and a few other things.

If as Matt says there are people that are part of an anti-nourry agenda, he's the other side of that same coin. One-eyed af, and I took from his comments at the end that he's working with the club ATM too, which adds a punch or salt to it all.

Either way, I appreciated the respectful and reasoned tone of the whole thing, and agree with people that said this was the best pod of the lot.

One of the points above by Martin I completely agree with, that some of the 'green flags' from Matt made me check a little of my own negativity. The initial reaction to a lot of what I hear - and that includes on the pod - has been largely scepticism, but then that's a two way street as Hunter reiterated.

I think that's ultimately my main issue. Stop trying to control our perception of the club and its decision makers. It's so PR obsessed and feels condescending that you don't think I/we can handle the fact you will make mistakes or get things wrong - especially when making such radical changes. There's been a lot of calling piss rain in these last few years and it's completely counter productive.

This is an extremely difficult job in hard circumstances, we get it, we won't pin you to the wall if you falter as long as we know what you're trying to do and what the aim is.

So take us with you, don't just ask us to trust blindly and wait on perceived results down the line. We do all want to the same thing generally speaking, and like it or not the club belongs to us as much as any director. Improve that side, get everyone on board through tangible actions not just expected sentiment, and I think you'll be harnessing something that separates us from everyone else.

Haven't read all through this thread yet, but just finished the pod and wanted to well done Tom. Really balanced and measured points in the face of some (fairly outrageous) points. A lesser man - like me - might have bitten at some of the opinions shared, but I thought you were excellent all the way through.

The box-to-box 8
at 16:48 2 Sep 2025

Hackney / Hamer are probably the outstanding examples in this league atm, but think of Cameron Brannigan at Oxford, O'Brien at Wrexham, Tanaka, Josh Brownhill, Alan Browne, Louza, Josh Knight, Jobe Bellingham, Matt Grimes... Someone that can play in a 2 or 3 man central midfield, that can pass forward, score and assist, but also not be a defensive liability.

Morgan is probably the closest we have to a box-to-box all around CM, but hes still young and physically not quite there yet. Varane and Field are superb Championship midfielders, but their best work is without the ball - they need someone to give it to.

Currently when the GK or back 4 look up, their options are Varane, Field or Madsen. None of which are very good at receiving, turning and playing out, or breaking the lines with passes and runs, and probably won't get 10 goals and assists between them. That's what we're missing.

More talented than Dunne because he can pass the ball well if nobody tries to stop him. Superb. Also getting mentioned in the same breath as Ray Wilkins should be a police matter.

We're all agreed that he can pass a nice ball, he's technically very good - even the biggest naysayers can't deny that. Unfortunately the issue is that the circumstances need to be perfect for him to not be a liability. When there's pressure, when the midfield is packed, when we need someone to put their hand up, show for the ball, impose themselves in the most important part of the pitch, he HIDES. He literally points away from himself when people are looking up for an option.

Until I see him doing otherwise and showing *consistently* that he's adapted to the mental and physical demands of a Championship midfield, he will remain a taller and much more expensive Andre Dozzell.

CONTRARY to FIRM BELIEF

Obviously I'm just an 'uneducated supporter', and I feel that these constant Madsen discussions are getting boring, but he was a fckin disgrace against Watford and looked better yesterday because we went more direct and he didn't have the pressure of playing out / through midfield.

He's got a great pass with time and when not under pressure, but as soon as things get difficult he melts.

We were screaming for a progressive 8 style CM when we bought him, and we still need one now. Let's hope he comes good, but he's got a long way to go with me personally to recover this first year of being shit.

As for Saito, I'm a little less enthused about him than some. Absolutely love him off the pitch and lots of really positive traits on it, but it's not a priority position and the reported fee is miles over someone that managed 3 goals last year...

Overall I'd be really happy to see him back, but not convinced he's the best use of resources.

Most chat suggests he's shit and massively injury prone, but also just a loan, which is a relief.

I think the key is being able to get games into Esq, without adding the pressure of him being the only option we have

We might be getting to the point where doing the shit away days for the same teams over and over is not worth the agg. Factor in this time of year, the general cost of trains/drinks/food/petrol, etc....

Familiar learnings and fresh frustrations as QPR lose at Watford – Report
at 18:02 18 Aug 2025

1) On Morgan, he was my MoM for all the reasons stated in the report - which is great btw - but the 2nd goal and a lot of their chances first half were him being drawn to a high press of their LB and allowing a pass down the line to spring a runner behind. They drew him out multiple times and got past him easily. 2nd half though he fixed it and did great on multiple occasions to stop that ball whilst still pressing.

2) I wondered this too, but assumed it was because being on the side of Mbengue would mitigate/cover his lack of pace, and maybe with Morgan having more licence to get forward, means we wouldn't be as exposed to counters on one side. It did feel a little disjointed though.

Lastly on Madsen. That's pretty much the final straw for me. If you can only perform well with time, space and without too much pressure, you have zero business being in a Championship midfield. He misplaced a really simple 10 yard pass in the first half and you could see him just crumble. Thought it was almost cruel to send him back out there, esp as he was going to be booed for going off, but he was a complete liability in the middle. You can rightly point to Fields limitations, but at least he's got the massive upside defensively and is several million times braver than Madsen has ever been.

If we get to the end of this window and haven't signed a proper box to box / 8 style midfielder, I don't think we'll ever see us successfully play the way the manager wants.
