Saints In Chase For Hull City Striker
Friday, 20th May 2022 07:40

It is the road to Hull for The Southampton scouting network according to the media and they will have plenty of competition with West Ham, Bournemouth and also Brentford all said to be chasing the same man,

Saints seem to be determined to increase their income from shirt sales by targeting players with double barrelled surnames, we already have JWP and also KWP and now it seems we could get a KLP as the next player with two surnames on his shirt could be Hull’s Keane Lewis-Potter.

The 21 year old is being linked with a number of clubs and it is also interesting to note that Brentford are also in the frame, with Sport Republic’s owners having been involved with the London club up until December it is likely that we now have access to their potential targets identified and this can only be a bonus as some new names may have been added to the existing names under consideration.

West Ham in particular have been looking at the player for a while, with HullLive journalist Baz Cooper confirming on Thursday that David Moyes’ side have been in constant discussions with Hull in regards to Lewis-Potter, but no agreement has been reached.

Brentford allegedly had a £12 million bid turned down in the summer with the Hull owner claiming he will turn down even £30 milllion, but the player is about to enter the last year of his deal and no new deal being agreed, that means his price will drop.

He is undoubtably a talent, but his goal scoring record isn’t great, only 12 goals in 46 Championship appearances this season, however he scooped all the player of the year awards at Hull so perhaps his scoring record doesn’t tell the full story.

This link has been around for almost a year, and I don't see it as really "credible ".
KLP hasn't totally changed the scene at Hull - even if he has had some good games.

We really need to sign players who will be "game-changers" in the starting line-up every week, and not hope for someone who might come off the bench and "shine" a little.
Our recent purchases of the " slightly-better " Championship stars hasn't proven very successful and the gap between the two leagues is clearly quite obvious in reality.

All we seem to be doing recently is sign second rate players who block the path of our "supposedly" better prospects, when what we actually require is a bit of experience.
That doesn't mean that they have to be in their thirties (although look at Milner at 37!) but it does mean it may cost a bit more in both fee and wages. The money this club has wasted on what they see as potential from foreign lower league players is frightening and if our academy cannot produce then scrap it and spend the money more productively.

For the record Brentford have no academy or a team in the B leagues. Now, rather than competing in youth leagues, Brentford B play exclusively in friendlies, either against U23 sides or senior teams further down the football pyramid. They consider it more challenging and a test for the young players and by targeting up-and-coming players from non-league and poaching rejects from Premier League youth academies, Brentford have found an inexpensive, yet profitable, business model
If our system isn't working and having the guys that set this system up at Brentford now steering us, is this the way forward?

We have purchased 2 strikers from the championship (Che Adams and Armstrong) and neither of them thus far have proved to be prolific in scoring yet they were in the league we purchased them from. This interest in the Hull striker is for someone who is not prolific at that level so I am not sure how (on the face of it) he will be an improvement on what we have or indeed whether we do not have better potential in our academy if this is the sort of level we are looking at.

We need clarity from the owners at what their intentions are on transfers and purchasing new players as I am not sensing that we are in the market for players that are going to change our fortunes or take us to the next level.

I also note that he is only 5’ 7, are we looking at shorter players for some reason, we are lacking taller defenders, are we going to have a totally “vertically challenged” team?

He is tiny so he would fit into our club policy of recruiting only players who can't head the ball.

Isn’t it more likely that, in the case of any player being chased by Brentford, we are supposedly now in the frame because it makes copy, rather than there is even a shrewd of truth in this barmy rumour, especially given our somewhat mixed success in buying Championship strikers…?

For his own good I sincerely hope that the Hull player mentioned stays at Hull or goes to any of the other clubs supposedly interested in signing him.

If he comes to St Mary’s whilst Ralph is in charge any progress he has previously made will come to a shuddering halt. Just ask Adams or the two Armstrongs or any of our centre backs and not forgetting Broja together with numerous players from our academy.

With our current manager we could sign Lionel Messe and within a couple of games he would be played out of position, dropped from the first team and made to sit on the substitutes bench as a punishment for failing to understand Ralph’s obvious match winning tactics.

Even when we buy strikers that score loads in the Championship they don't score freely in the P L. Sounds like agent talk to me.
