Saints Get Two Managers Off The Payroll In A Week Sunday, 8th Jun 2025 21:25 Two Former Saints Managers have found themselves new suitors this week, and ironically both could be about to grace the Champions League with their new clubs next season, Arron Sanders takes a look at the situation.
Firstly Russell Martin, has been appointed as the man in charge at Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers where he has been tasked with trying to close the gap to rivals Celtic who have dominated Scottish football winning the last four consecutive SPL titles under former Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers.
As shown in his time on the south coast, Martin is known to come calling for former players he has taken a shine to so who of anyone will he come knocking on the St Mary’s door for this summer?

Secondly it’s been announced that Ivan Juric, has returned to Italy to take the reins at Serie A side Atalanta.
Juric has been given the chance to restore his reputation on the back of two horrible stints at Saints and AS Roma but thanks to no doubt to the combination of a good recommendation from his mentor Gaspierini the man whom Juric is replacing and his work at Torino among others the Croatian has the opportunity to potentially grace European footballs biggest stage.

With both men now back in work, any obligation Saints have to pay out the remainder of their contracts so financial coffers could be boosted for an extra signing or two this summer.

It's always down to managers, players and systems. RM managed the highest % possession rate in our Championship season, but we lacked the extra striker to be really convincing. In the end we had to beat Leeds 3 times in order to get promotion, but the squad that remained clearly wasn't good enough for the Prem. with a predictable outcome. If RM can raise the standard at Rangers then it may work OK, but Celtic are formidable opposition. to be fair, Juric was on a hiding to nothing, (as he was unemployed at the time so wasn't going to refuse) when no other experienced manager would touch us with a bargepole. He did try to change the set-up and attack more, but it was tough without a big goalscorer up front and he was unlucky in several games where we lost points in the last 10 minutes. Like Ipswich and Leicester, our squads just weren't good enough for the top tier, and we paid the price. I don't think Juric was devoid of ideas, and if he makes a success of it at Atalanta (not a bad club) then he was just another victim of that terrible season. It will give Saints' CFO a relaxing morning, to release us from the burden of those huge compensation payments that may have stretched out another year ..or more, had they not found new clubs to manage. Additionally, if RM and Ivan also take their assistant staffs with them, we will also be free of their compensation payments.

I suppose the terms of contract with Juric may be unknown and not be what is usually the case with ongoing payment after their replacement at Saints. It might’ve been the case that it was agreed he could be released upon relegation without the usual ongoing payment. That would tie in well with how he went before the season end.

Blogs 31 bloggersKnees-up Mother Brown #19 by wessex_exile February, and the U’s enter the most pivotal month of the season. Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process. What’s the excuse going to be today Steve – shocking pitch, faking head injuries, Mexican banditry or some other bit of sour-grapery bullsh*t? Derby County Polls |
